What I gathered from this post is that you don't know what Mayhem's logo looks like.

Or the fact that it more than likely said Festival either under or next to Mayhem.

Or a year, or a design that would definitely not be for a black metal band

I'll tell ya Manks, since you are not very confident in my line up but I am, lets make a sig bet.

If Rob Zombie, 5FDP, Mastodon, MH, ITM, Amon Amarth, Battlecross, JFAC, Emmure, MIW, Behemoth, Butcher Babies, Huntress are NOT on Mayhem Fest this year - any one of the bands - I will change my sig to ANY website URL of your choosing until the last date of Mayhem Fest 2013 is over. If ALL of those bands are listed as playing then you change your sig to my facebook url until the last date of Mayhem Fest is over. Deal? I could look very silly every time I post here if I am wrong about this... I'll check back tomorrow to see if you are up for this...

I agree. Also with Battlecross, Behemoth, JFAC and Amon posting Mayhem Fest line up announcement vids on their facebook/twitter a month ago along with Mr. Lyman telling everyone that Rob Zombie was headlining at a seminar back in December (?). I guess they need to go after them too? :D

I feel like they'd be better off pulling a Warped Tour and announcing bands in chunks. Name the first few bands in December, have tix on sale for Christmas, then release two or three more bands every couple of weeks.

Best quote from the comments :

That means more underground metal bands like Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, Behemoth and Job for a cowboy, oh yes.

Never knew these bands were underground.

Also laughing at people saying they picked small bands since they spent a lot of money on Slipknot last year.

In my opinion, nothing. There are very few metal bands I would describe as mainstream or underground. A majority of them are somewhere in between the two in terms of how known they are, so I just don't label as anything.

I don't label bands as underground ever. A "underground" band doesn't go around selling out the House Of Blue. They may not be well known to the crowd of mayhem going there for FFDP and ITM but to say underground makes you sound stupid.

MPF
03-15-2013, 07:35 PM
It's not stupid at all to say they are Underground. Metal in and of itself is Underground. If You are a Mainstream Radio fan, Metallica, Slipkno, FFDonkeyPunch, etc is as heavy as it gets.

In other parts of the world, yes Metal is not Underground, it's celebrated. But here in the states, the average radio listener thinks Metallica is the Devils music with satanic chords, and vocals you can't understand.

If you grew up with Metal, that's different, but Mind you, Metal as a whole is one of the least listened to genres of music in the States. Children Of Bodom and Amon Amarth are INDEED underground to people who don't listen to it. Just as whoever mid to club level country, indie and Hip Hop artists who are not on mainstream radio are HUGE to those who listen to them.

Yeah maybe times have changed where you are from, but living in Rural Wisconsin and not living in any kind of city life besides going to shows, and keeping to myself besides close friends and the bands I interview. I have my own opinions based on what I encounter. I get my news information from label emails, band emails, discovering music on my own and on here. Hell Blabbermouth features me and I don't even read my articles on there. I don't have other things to tell me what is cool and what is not. And yeah, Maybe Metallica is the most celebrated Metal band in the world, but if you ask people over a certain age, or of the right religious group, it's as Satanic as Mainstream Jazz was in the 20s and 30s.

The point of all of this is that Metal is one of the most underrated genres of music out there, NOT INCLUDING SUB GENRES. I never stated I go to Hot Topic to get anything metal related I simply said you can walk into a Hot Topic and buy cds and shirts from bands like COB.

Just to prove this point one more time, at the Mall of America, the company who owns Hot Topic, who also owns the GAP, now has a store dedicated to One Direction for the next 6 months...

Now why would their fan base of Asking Alexandria and Taylor Swift fans correlate to anything Metal related?

I've been to plenty of shows when I was in high school where I asked people where they go their Dimmu Borgir, or Cannibal Corpse shirts, and they said Hot Topic. I asked them what songs they liked and almost verbatim the answer is " I didn't know they were a band. I just thought the shirt was cool."

Granted maybe things have changed, I graduated 6 years ago, but I can't imagine the metal scene exactly got stronger in those 6 years in the mainstream crowds without THOSE kinds of people filling out the bases.

This.

I mean god damn how many metal songs are featured in mainstream horror movies now a days.

Prime example Rob Zombie is pretty much known to everyone know for his work in movies and everyone that knows about his movies knows about his music.

Black Sabbath played Lolla last year as the headliner. One of the biggest fests in the US got headlined by a metal band, a fest in which 99% of the stuff isn't metal.

But you never go around and hear anyone use the term underground to describe bands like COB or anything. You can walk into a Hot Topic and buy COB shirts and cds.

This is news to me. The last time I walked into a HT, the closest thing they had to CoB is ONE Iron Maiden hoodie (which I bought :D) a few Metallica shirts, and a Slipknot wristband or something like that.

I do get the point though. Honestly, the term I use to describe bands like that is "mid-level". They aren't selling out the local arena or shit like that (Metallica, Iron Maiden), but they're clearly not a band that plays at dives in the middle of nowhere for gas money to see their fans either (Exhumed, Eyehategod).

I hate this thread, but feel the need to point out that using Black Sabbath as evidence of metal's popularity isn't a great example. Sure, they're metal, but they're nothing more than hard rock to the general public. Not to mention that these people don't care about Tony or Geezer, but only Ozzy. The Dio era (or others) mean nothing to them.

Also, Hot Topic has changed a lot of the years. It used to be ok, stocking a lot of melodeath and metal around the same popularity. Then, it became pretty bad, going to mainly Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc. Then, it was awesome, and they started stocking Kreator, Sodom, and Destruction stuff. And now, it is worse than it's ever been. Last time I went to one, I could only find Metallica and not Slayer.

Its more rap and pop stuff. Theres a few slipknot, metallica, iron maiden etc. But the rest is 1D, 2chainz, BMTH, Asking Alexandria etc. Really sucks. And i havent seen a cob shirt in there ever, and i also havent seen a Cannibal Corpse on in about a year :(

I keep seeing this Thrown Into Exile band listed and ranked in the middle of the band ordering. Anything I can find on them indicates they have yet to release their debut EP and their one song on Youtube has like 600 views.

This band seems like they would be more qualified to be a local opener than listed above Machine Head and JFAC for the whole tour. Perhaps the order is jumbled in the lists but they still seem like a very tiny band to be playing on Mayhem.

Edit: Saw the lineup by stages Steev posted, they are indeed opening the fest.

They're fine on the big stage. If anything I'd rather have Amon Amarth on the side stage. They're way better for crazy crowds/moshing, plus they don't have much of a stage set-up so them on a huge stage would just be meh.

Zombie is the one you're questioning? Dude has been headlining tours for almost a decade and a half now, and that's not including the tours with White Zombie. If anything I'm amazed 5FDP is the co-headliner. I didn't realize they had such a big audience.

Personally, I think he can bring in the cash. He had a huge audience in the '90s thanks to MTV, and it only mulitiplied when he started making movies. Could he do stadiums alone? I'd venture to say yes, but to be honest I don't know. But I know for a fact he can do large theaters and ampitheaters, which given Mayhem Fest's selection of venues, is perfect for them.

Stadiums alone? Not even close. Sorry, but he ain't ACDC or Metallica.

He couldn't do summer sheds or arenas by himself either.

His last few tours have all been co-headlining (w/ Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson & Megadeth).

The last time he toured without a huge name on the bill was in early 2010 and he was playing House of Blues sized venues.

Zombie only swapped with Slayer because he chose to do so to make the package work. He has admitted to Slayer being his favorite band on several occasions. I like Slayer better but Zombie is the bigger draw imo. Ticket sales don't always relate to which band makes better music. He headlined the other tours over Megadeth, Manson and Alice Cooper. He can draw a crowd but like several other artists he is touring too much and over saturating the market to make up for lost revenue from album sales.

Its too bad Mayhem didn't get some flesh blood this time. What about Judas Priest as a headliner? They certainly wouldn't cost as much money as Slipknot and probably not much more than Zombie.

I'll be buying my tickets around 6 hours after on-sale time, due to time differences down here. Will good tickets still be available, or do the GA areas normally sell out that quickly?

Its a radio presale that started about 30 mins ago. PW is 'black'.

It looks like Houston and Buffalo are getting the full Mayhem shows this year instead of just main stage, if the Ticketmaster listings are to be believed. No day off at Six Flags in Buffalo for me this year, I guess :(

Exactly. I may do the $35 package just to help them out. As far as crowd-sourcing goes, I feel like the price tiers are pretty reasonable.

and we were just announced to play a tour that could really give our band the break that we've been working towards for our whole life: the 6th Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest with Rob Zombie, Five Finger Death Punch, Machinehead, Amon Amarth and some of the most popular acts in hard music today.

Acting as if that spot isn't Mastodon's.

Final Mayhem lineup addition: me. See you at the Metal Blade tent.

We're talking now about what sort of items we want to order, I'm pushing for some old school "axe" logo shirts and more vinyl. Last year we were selling vinyl (Slayer and Whitechapel) for $15 and CDs for $10. Anything special you guys want to see for sale? Any old back catalog stuff? Maybe with the Cannibal Corpse anniversary releases this year I can try to push for some of that stuff.

Some Amon Amarth stuff(obviously), it'd be cool if Metal Blade did something around that time in the NJ area since Brian partially owns the Trenton Titana

Amon Amarth will have their own tent, but I bet I'll have some, as well. Last year I had music from all of the MB bands on Mayhem, including stuff that the bands themselves didn't bring.

But I'm trying to think of bands that aren't on Mayhem - last year I sold through my Ghost music right away, all the vinyl was gone in a few days, and Metal Massacre 1 on CD sold out pretty quickly.

BEHEMOTH FORCED TO CANCEL ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL APPEARANCE

Drummer Inferno undergoes surgery and unable to perform while he recovers

Poland’s blackened death metal outfit BEHEMOTH have been forced to cancel their upcoming appearance on theRockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival due to their drummer Inferno taking ill and requiring surgery.

The band’s front-man Nergal comments; "This must have been the most difficult decision we were forced to make in recent years. Behemoth is known for not canceling any shows or tours. But this is not something we can do whenwe are missing our driving force, the man behind the drums - Inferno. Unfortunately, he was hospitalized due to appendix surgery and it's gonna take him few months to fully recover and get back to shape. We are trying to save selected European Festivals with a fill in drummer (Krimh,ex-Decapitated), but we won't be risking doing a full-on prestigious tour like the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival without Inferno. Behemoth is a solid unit and any part of this unit missing makes us weaker, and that is not how we want to present our new material to our fans. Please, accept our apologies and be patient, we shall return to Europe (this fall) and US (early 2014) empowered and motivated as never before!"

The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival is set to kick off on Saturday, June 29 in San Bernardino, CA and features bands such as Rob Zombie, Five Finger Death Punch, Mastodon, label mates Amon Amarth, Machine Head, label mates Job For a Cowboy and Battlecross, Children of Bodom, and many more. For tickets, dates, contests, and more, head to the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival Official Site and follow the tour onFacebook and Twitter.

BEHEMOTH’s recently announced forthcoming full-length album, The Satanist, is scheduled for a fall 2013 release. For further updates please visit the band’s Facebook page

I am not too big on Behemoth, but they were a bit of the saving grace for this tour and I was considering on going if it was on a weekend. It'd be really cool to see Machine Head again, and Rob Zombie would be cool too, I guess, but those two bands don't make me WANT to go.
