Congratulations, stolen right from a Sergeant D article. If you're going to insult one of the most proficient black metal artists there is, at least try to make it original.

Being original wasn't my intention. Insulting the band was.

Wait, so people can dish it out about a band they don't like, but they can't take it?

Go ahead and bash bands like Slipknot and Chimaira, but you bash a band whose music sounds like someone sprayed a can of lysol into a microphone and yet people are all super bitchy and whiney.

And really, the whole "at least be original about it" line is such a bullshit retort. I'm sure if I quoted or stole a line about them that was positive no one would have said anything.

Have you heard any of the post-prison stuff? The production doesn't suck at all...

I don't like Burzum. I listened to Fallen and gave it a chance. While it doesn't necessarily turn my crank, saying that it sounds like someone sprayed a can of lysol into microphone reeks of ignorance. The early stuff is hard to listen to for a non-fan, as a lot of black metal from that time period is, but to say that what Varg is doing now is without merit is just plain silly. Good troll though, I guess. Obvious, but you got the desired reaction.

I wasn't just trolling. Sure there was the Sergeant D line that I quoted (or stole), but that's how I feel about Burzum's music. I haven't listened to any of his new stuff since he was released from prison, but why would I? If I wasn't a fan of his earlier stuff, why would I try out his newer stuff on the off chance that I might like it? I'd rather just stick with stuff from bands I know I like or check out bands I haven't heard before.

It probably goes without saying that i'm not a fan of Black metal at all, so i'm sure that has to do with it. Maybe the "lysol can" line is an exaggeration, but the vast majority of black metal to me just sounds really, really shitty and most of that has to do with the production style. The production doesn't need to be glossy and incredibly high end and polished for me to like it, but it needs to be at least listenable quality. if that makes me too mainstream or by-the-numbers, than so be it. And the line someone posted about not everyone having access to professional recording equipment doesn't bode well with me either. I've heard stuff recorded by high school kids on their computers that sounds better than that. It's especially not an excuse when a good portion of BM bands, if i'm not mistaken, strive for an incredibly low quality production value on purpose.

I cringed hard reading this post. About the first sentence I highlighted, you're saying that bands cannot improve. This is completely ridiculous. "If a bands debut album is shitty they can write the next Master of Puppets for all I care i'm not gonna listen to it." Flawless logic.

Item #2. There's a big difference between early 90's recording equipment and modern computers. I shouldn't have to elaborate on that.

I was once like you. "Fuck it, I've heard State of Euphoria, I thought it sucked dick so why would I bother listening to any other Anthrax album?" Because then I heard Spreading the Disease and Persistence of Time and had to make amends for saying to various people that Anthrax were a glorified cover band. Listen to new shit. I don't like black metal either but I've been making a point of listening to at least a couple of the more "landmark" black metal releases every year to at least familiarize myself with the genre and figure out if there's someting there that's worthwhile to me. There's nothing more pathetic than a "music fan" who listens to about 10 bands and has nothing but bad things to say about music he's completely unfamiliar with. Honestly, why bash a band that you haven't listened to? I haven't listened to a Slipknot album in years and I have no idea what Chimaira sound like nowadays, but I'm not about to trash them without even listening to a couple songs.

If it was just Burzum I didn't like but liked other black metal, than maybe i'd be more willing to give his stuff a chance more often. And there's a big difference between bashing a band you haven't listened to and bashing a band you have listened to but aren't well-versed with. Burzum falls into the latter for me. I've also done my due diligence with them and other black metal bands as well and not just listened to two tracks and decided it was crap, but you don't need to listen to a band's entire catalogue in order to form an opinion of them.

But hey, I'll still take your advice. Maybe sometime this week when i'm not playing video games, listening to other music I love, watching movies, playing guitar, watching sports, watching porn, masturbating, or really doing anything else that I already enjoy doing more than listening to Burzum, i'll listen to some songs from his post-prison albums.

I love the Romantic painting for album covers thing. A lot of good art doesn't get noticed any more and I think using paintings for covers sort of brings a revival of sorts.
