Fifteen bands to choose from, as well as an Other option.

Proceed :shred:

Since I would probably be the only one who would vote for MOTHERFUCKING NECROPHAGIA WHO YOU FORGOT TO INCLUDE, LINCOLN...

I'll go witth Malevolent Creation ;)

I'm picking Terrorizer, even tho I don't consider them Death Metal.

Epidemic Reign

Malevolent Creation's sophomore "Retribution" was probably better than any old school USDM album. But old school Swedish DM was always better in any case. And if you don't agree with me, that's ok. I'm drunk :)

It used to be Death a few years ago, but now it's definitely between Deicide and Morbid Angel.

Tough decision, but I'll give Deicide the slight edge.

No wonder ravenheart doesn't listen to much death metal.

He thinks Obituary is the answer

Crionics

Death :rocker:

Could have gone to Morbid Angel though.

Morbid Angel. Though I considered giving it to Death or Suffocation because they didn't make Illuid Divinium Insanus.

BloodoftheKings
01-15-2012, 08:55 AM
I went with Autopsy. I didn't pick Death since only their first 3 albums are old school death metal and those aren't even my favorites by them.

A lot of good choices there, a lot of bands I listen to and a lot that I don't listen to but respect. But I have to choose SUFFOCATION, because (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpUHfjXb-6Q)

Morbid Angel for Chapel of Ghouls alone.

They're the only band I like on the whole list. I don't like death metal.

If the question had been "who is the best American old school death metal band," I wouldn't have voted.

I went with Immolation. One of the most consistent bands ever, and Dawn of Possession and Close to a World Below are outstanding. Looks like someone else voted for them too! :fist:

Immolation is definitely up there for me as well.

After Deicide and Morbid Angel, it's between Suffocation and Immolation for me. And my old favorite Death rounds out the Top 5.

It's amazing how many of these bands were once signed to Roadrunner (Obituary, Suffocation, Deicide, and I think Malevolent Creation and Immolation). Damn, that label was awesome in the 1990's.

I went with Suffocation since I rank several of these very highly, but Suffocation are probably the most consistent out of all of them in terms of live performance, albums and musical style.

EDIT: By the way, I got this one-question quiz correct, by the way. I selected Death.

EDIT2: Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy and Obituary (in that order) are the correct answers if you're rounding out the top five, by the way.

Immolation fans; could one of you recommend me an album to start off with? I just listened to the Scion EP and it's fucking great. :rocker:

Obituary over Deicide? Not sure if I can agree with that :eyes:

Dawn of Possession, Here In After, Close to a World Below. All of their releases are awesome though, the ones I listed are just my favorites.

There's no use torrenting, since the computer I'm using is my mom's, but looking at the catalog for the Russian equivalent of Amazon, they've only got Majesty and Decay :(

That is still a good album, you may as well start with that if that's all you can listen to. But when you can, get around to the older stuff.

Oops.. I forgot that "American" was in the title. And in the case of old school death metal worldwide, Carcass should be before Pestilence anyway. :D

And a ton of Swedish bands would be above all those bands. As well as Darkthrone's first album.

I love Swedish death metal, but I think I would still leave it like that. It's just never caught my attention quite as much as the other scenes.

@ Tregs: So basically, you and I agree, except for:

You would include Suffocation, and I didn't mention them only because I've never really listened to them much,
You would omit Cannibal Corpse, and I can't claim to be their biggest fan either, but I'm aware of the imprint they've made on the genre, so I included them, and finally...
You would include Pestilence. You're damn right they're awesome, but as has been said they're from Holland. But fuck yes Pestilence. :fist:

Yeah, I've never really been that into Cannibal Corpse. I get their appeal and that they've had a huge impact on death metal, but I just don't listen to them often.

And again, if it weren't for the "American" part... Bolt Thrower would have to be in there too!

Entombed and Dismember are two truly great bands in the scene...

But then take a look at all the truly great bands in the American scene. There's a lot more. Now obviously America is a much bigger country than Sweden, but the fact remains, there are more American death metal bands that I love than there are Swedish ones.

Not that I'm arguing with you, but Russia is bigger than Sweden OR Norway and our death metal scene (let alone metal scene overall) is non-existent ;)
