Mastodon bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders confirmed last night that the band will be joining Opeth and Ghost for a U.S. tour in April. Sanders stated "We go to Australia take part in the Soundwave Festival, which is going to be lovely… Take a short break. Do a North American tour with OPETH and GHOST. And then take another break and come back over here for the European festival season."

Tour dates and venues are expected to be released next week.

Agreed. At first it might seem natural that Mastodon would headline, but I'm not certain that's the case anymore.

Opeth have quite a bit more "listeners" on last.fm than Mastodon. And Opeth sold out The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver (months before the show). I don't think Mastodon sold out the same venue when they stopped by. Also:

machine head's tour is the first for their new album. why they are even bothering with maine is beyond me. rare exception.

whereas mastodon is on their second run within half a year. yes, they could probably do fine hitting up the same markets again, but you guys folllow tours incessantly enough to know that rarely do bands do that. and i really dont think the inclusion of opeth is going to change that much.

Just hoping that since Mastodon skipped Canada entirely on the last tour that they'll stop by this time. I'm guessing that we're in prime territory for it, since I'd consider Vancouver an "A" market and neither Mastodon or Ghost has been here in the past year+.

Being the local Maine resident around here I am completely shocked they are playing here. Maine is not a metal state. It is a Deathcore/hardcore state. Someone has been pushing for more metal shows around here. I'm not sure who it is but it might be one of the more known radio DJ's in the area who has always pushed for shows like this. He has a bit of say and might have found a way to get shows like this here with new management running The State Theater.

It's not the ticket price for me, so much as it is the marginal interest on my part. The only band on the bill I really care about is Mastodon, and they just released an album I really didn't like all that much, so...yeah.

 really? Not sure what your reaction was about, but I'm assuming it was Mastodon. Sure, The Hunter has some cool moments, but there are some songs on there that I just have a real problem with...or more specifically, the fact that Mastodon wrote them. They sound like Pink Floyd or some shit. I mean, that's fine and all, but if I want to listen to Floyd I'll listen to Floyd. Plus, there's the whole thing about them promising Leviathan II and delivering something completely different. I admit I stilll haven't completely gotten over that.

Just in case your reaction was about Opeth, my non-love (which isn't hate - just the absence of love) for them is fairly well-documented in the annals of this forum. :D

...and Ghost? Not so sure about them. I'd like to see them live by accident one day. That would be OK.

Fucking christ, man. I literally just bought my Behemoth ticket an hour ago, too.

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. I THOUGHT THIS TOUR WAS SUPPOSED TO BE IN MAY?!?!

Anyway, true that I love the fuck out of Behemoth. One of my favorite bands. Not many bands top them. Mastodon and Opeth happen to be some of those bands. :bouville: I dunno. I had to skip out on Ghost, too. Really wanted to see them. This is bad. Other than a little bit of Watain, I don't even care about the other bands on the Behemoth tour. But it's Behemoth. But I love Mastodon! And Opeth! And I skipped out on Mastodon's last headliner to catch BTBAM, which I later regretted, and promised myself that I'd hit them up next time they came around.

I literally have no idea what I should do. Buy a Mastopeth ticket? Hold onto my Behemoth one? Sell it? Or just wait until I start seeing the setlists of the tours to decide? Here's the deal: if Opeth are playing heavy stuff this tour, I'm going to that one. If not, I'll stick with Behemoth.

I'm expecting the front to be around $60 and the rest to be in the $30-$40 range. I'm fine with getting cheap seats for this. I've seen Mastodon from right next to the rail on the Dethklok tour and will be seeing Ghost on Thursday at the Roxy. I haven't seen Opeth yet, but don't need to be close for them.

I do like Opeth more than Behemoth and Watain, and that's a fact. I don't know, though. I'll figure it out.

Arman, Daimonos is ten times the man you will ever be. Come to college up in Chicago and mosh with us.

And Daimonos, I'm not incredibly tempted to go see Opeth perform clean stuff again, if that's what they're doing. If they are dipping into heavy stuff, this is gonna be a way harder decision for me.

Fuuuuuuuuck. I already bought my Behemoth ticket. I dunno. My little brother actually loves the fuck out of both Mastodon and Opeth (not their clean stuff, though). I'm considering asking if he wants to fly up that weekend and catch the show with me. But it might sell out if I don't buy tickets soon... Well fuck, I could be married in 3 years bro. I'll be out of college, at least. Probably still living in Chicago if I can.

And the more I'm thinking about it, if I can get my little bro to come up to Chi-town that weekend, we're definitely gonna see Mastopeth together if we can. He hasn't seen either, and it would mean a ton for him to catch them. He goes to school out in Arizona, and is in Air Force ROTC. He doesn't get a lot of free time and NEVER gets concerts.

FYI folks, it cost $50 thru Ticketmaster including fees for the NYC show. It doesn't even pay to go down to the venue anymore to avoid service fees, it's a Live Nation venue so they charge you at least $5 for the "convenience" of coming to them. They don't even sell tix at Roseland, you have to go down to Irving Plaza to get them.

You say this like the prices are completely ridiculous and unfair. $50 shows at the Roseland are very common and it's fucking Mastodon and Opeth co-headlining, it's well worth the price.

Mastodon sucks and Opeth and Ghost are the only reasons to go. Roseland BLOWS!! The sound in that venue is terrible, the upstairs of Hammerstein was great they should have done that again.

Ghost isn't the greatest thing in the world but I'll take it over Mastodon. I hate stoner/post/etc. music, I've hated ever since I saw that garbage band Kilgore Smudge open for Slayer & Fear Factory (at Roseland no less!) in 1998.

Listening back, I still don't like it, but it's still a step up from Mastodon.

Opeth however, has enough musical force and power to move Mount Everest.

Speaking of that, on a lighter note...

Fair enough, I am not a big fan of sludge either that is unless if you count Acid Bath and Down as sludge. Also that Kilgore Smudge doesn't sound bad at all, got a nice groove to it.

Actually, now I'm like only 50% sure I'll go see Mastopeth instead of Behemoth since my brother might not be able to make it up that weekend due to finals. We grew up in middle school and high school loving Mastodon and Opeth so much; it would mean a ton to see them with him. But no little bro = not going to pick them over Behemoth, so we'll see.

Yes, there's a fine line between sludge and doom. Down is straight up doom while Acid Bath is sludge. Acid Bath happens to be one of my favorite bands. I wish Dax would really play in a heavy band again. I love everything he does, but I miss the old shit :(

Hmmmm.... not sure I agree with this.

I think Down is more of a sludge band than a doom band, but they just have more elements of traditional heavy metal and rock than other sludge bands like Eyehategod, Sourvein, Weedeater, Noothgrush, ect. . Acid Bath, is completely indescribable by one genre. They're some kind of sludge/hardcore/thrash hybrid almost. I was once told that Acid Bath was grunge gone wrong, and I think that's a funny statement.. They're one of my favorite bands, too.

Just catching the last part of this,

Mikael did say for the Heritage tour that they didn't want to do heavier songs as it would ruin the feel of the night. Only having live bootlegs, I can agree. Deliverance and Ghost Of Perdition didn't fit in that tour.

And Mikael has NEVER said that they are done with Death Metal altogether. Just for future releases, and even that he said might come back if future songs call for it.

in other words.....FUCKING RELAX!
