I just realized that I missed the 5th anniversary of my first metal concert! And I also noticed that I didn't do a review of this show either, but I didn't do those back then. :P Join my on my nostalgic trip to the past.

This was my first metal concert, my first concert in Lawrence, my first concert with just me and a friend, and one of the best I've ever seen. It was a long time ago, so I only remember certain things, so I'll try my best to paint a picture.

I had gotten heavily into metal in January of 2005, and Celtic Frost was one of the first batches of bands I got into. Specifically, the song Into The Crypts of Rays. I remember reading the Arts and Entertainment section of my newspaper in May of 2006, and they said Monotheist was coming out the day before my birthday. I don't know why, but that really stuck out to me. So I picked up Monotheist and continued listening heavily to Celtic Frost. I don't remember where, but I somehow heard of the show they were having in Lawrence. I was excited, but only if I knew then what I knew now of just how legendary they were. I burned all of Monotheist and all of Morbid Tales into my brain, so I was lucky.

There was a pretty big line to get into The Bottleneck, but it seemed to go fast. The first band was a local band called Moire. For the life of me I can't remember exactly what kind of music they played, since it was so long ago. They recently became really active in the local music scene here again, so I hope to see them again soon.

I think on this tour, at times 1349 opened for Celtic Frost and I actually think Sunn O))) was opening for them too on some dates. We got neither here, but Goatwhore was direct support. I thought they really kicked ass. Really fast and really heavy. This was around the time A Haunting Curse came out, which I picked up after their set. They were great, and they're another band I haven't seen since. (Seeing them in Feb. with Hate Eternal though!)

It took a really long time for Celtic Frost to get on stage. It was a school night, so my friend and I were kind of nervous about getting home at a decent time (my step-dad drove us and was just kinda hanging out downtown, waiting for us to call him when we were done). It took them a long time to get on stage, then their intro took quite a while too, but I'll never forget...right when the music stopped, the feedback started...they launched into the most devastatingly slow and heavy version of Procreation Of The Wicked I've ever heard. It was kind of fucking insane. There wasn't a single person in the venue not headbanging. Martin Erich Ain was also pretty hilarious. I remember him saying something like "I CAN TELL YOU RIGHT NOW THAT BECAUSE OF US AND ALL YOU HERE RIGHT NOW, LAWRENCE KANSAS IS THE MOST SATANIC FUCKING PLACE ON EARTH TONIGHT!" and that was fucking metal. :fist: Circle of the Tyrants was outstanding, and I remember Ain Elohim was especially great.

The worst part of the night was we left at about 12:30, missing the last two songs. :( Really upset about that, but still one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I still wear the Morbid Tales shirt I picked up from there, and my friend still has his Monotheist tour shirt.

In November of next year, they came to Lawrence again, opening for Type O Negative. I went to buy tix the day before, but it was sold out. I was crushed. It still kind of hurts to think about, now that they're broken up. I just can't wait for Triptykon to get around these parts.

:fist: So yeah, that's about it. My 2nd metal concert was Cannibal Corpse the next month. Maybe I'll do a review on that sometime...

Procreation (of the Wicked)
Visions of Mortality
Circle of the Tyrants
The Usurper
Jewel Throne
Ain Elohim
Necromantical Screams
Dawn of Meggido
Mesmerized
Ground
Return to the Eve
Dethroned Emperor
Into the Crypts of Rays
Synagoga Satanae

That's a badass first concert to go to. I wish I saw the Celtic Frost reunion tour. :(

Though I never understood why A Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh was a single/music video for Monotheist and yet they never played it live. That song was excellent.

Fuck yeah. I hope Triptykon pulls it out eventually. Nowadays, it's probably my favorite Monotheist track.

Sounds epic as fuck! I would have liked to see Celtic Frost :bouville:
My first one was the At the Gates reunion tour, with Darkest Hour, Municipal Waste and Toxic Holocaust... not bad either ;)

The first three songs on Monotheist are forever stone cold Celtic Frost classics. The rest I go back and forth on.

Wasn't Repulsion on one of their reunion tour legs?

Yeah, I hope they do another tour... they were incredible live and everyone was totally into it, screaming every lyric. It was crazy and they're still one of my favourite bands!

Yeah, we got Sunn O))) (and Goatwhore) in San Diego.

I passed on seeing them on the Type O tour the following year since it skipped San Diego and I didn't feel like driving to Anaheim. In hindsight, I really regret that decision.

I feel like an asshole for never seeing Celtic Frost, since they toured a shitload in their last couple years together.

Me too. I also feel like an asshole for missing Triptykon when I had the chance on easily making it to one of their shows back when they were touring around here in these neck of the woods in october of 2010 :(

Not so much slacking on my part but THE REAL reason I missed out on Triptykon was because I saw Slayer/Megadeth/anthrax like 2 nights before the Triptykon show. The show was awful, plagued with technical difficulties and super shitty over all Sound and Slayer fucking sucked in every possible way you can think of. I really regret taking the time and effort to go to that show because it was not worth one fucking pennie.. Probably the worst metal concert I have ever attended and definitely not worth the almost 2 hour + drive with traffic. And to top it off I got my ass kicked during the last two songs and kicked out of the venue because the security "didn't like" the fact that I was getting rowdy and headbanging and having a good time at the show(this venue had some really lame and fucked up rules like you were not allowed to leave your seat unless it was for the bathroom or something). Anyways the security did a good number on me and I was left border line broken and bruised. I remember at one point he held me by the wall and started screaming into my face "Did you come to have a good time or come to act like a fucking retard" and he kept repeating it while slamming my head to the floor and wall. :(

Long story short; the damage was done and my body was too fucked up from that show to go to the Triptykon show which was only 48 hours after the god awfull slayer/megadeth show. I seriously regret missing it cause I keep hearing how loud and heavy their shows are. Hopefully they come back this year because there is no way in hell that I missing them this time. I would have totally made the effort to see them in 2010 but I just wasn't in the mood for another 2 hour drive to LA and more importantly my body was still in very early stages of healing all my bruises and scars that the security left on me. :hmm:

The Triptykon show I saw in '10 was probably the heaviest show I have ever seen. Easily in my top 5 that I have seen in my life. Complete travesty that 1349 were the headliner but it is what it is I suppose. I cannot wait for new Triptykon, whenever that may be.

Holy shit dude. That sucks that you didn't enjoy that show even with security issues aside. I loved being at that show and while there were a couple of annoyances (the crowd sucking for Anthrax, Megadeth going into Trust after Rust In Peace in it's entirety, Slayer not playing Chemical Warfare), I had a blast. And I was even in the pit!

Holy shit dude. That sucks that you didn't enjoy that show even with security issues aside.

Yeah man but I didn't even mention the icing on the cake. As the security started pummeling my ass to the ground he starts dragging me like a rag doll on the floor and up a flight of stairs to the exit. And let me tell you bro, those stair cases ain't short and quick. I felt so embarrassed as he was dragging me across the fucking venue infront of everyone to see me while my face and body is hitting all sorts of shit on the fucking floor from boose, piss, food shit ect. And to add the final insult to injury as I am i getting dragged like a bitch on the floor I get smeared by a pile of a vomit(from the floor obviously) that scrapes all the way from my face to the bottom of my feet and shoes, so now I basically have puke and vomit all over my body, a walking pile of "throw up" if you could say :(

And yeah, smacked me up like a little bitch against the wall and boom, threw my ass right out of the venues double doors during the middle of Angel of Death and Yeah, that's pretty much it. You know I must say...I consider myself a very very laid back and VERY CHILL person because a lot of people that night would have totally complained to management and done something about it, I donno about law suits and shit but no one would have tolerated what I went through that night. And no one should absolutely go through what I went through. I witnessed power being abused at the highest power. It was just one guy by the way. Just one mean ol Ass hat who just wasn't having a good day. And I just happen to be the person he decides to take all his frustration out on. I really didn't do anything at all. I just got out of my seat and was like "FUCK THIS SITTING DOWN RULES BULLSHIT, ITS FUCKIN SLAYER" and i decided to go balls off the wall crazy during angel of death and the next thing I know i get tackled on the floor and yeah the rest i'm not going to repeat. But as I said before; most people would have totally not let something like that slide but I consider my self a very very laid back person.

Very laid back :stoned:

But yeah i guess that's my 2 cent's reput in .

Oddly enough, the only times I've had trouble with bouncers being dickheads is at decidedly non-metal shows. It's never happened to me, but it's happened to my friends and people around me.

The Modest Mouse show I saw a few years back instantly springs to mind.

I still feel this way to the core.

But I'm really just jealous in general of anyone that's seen Celtic Frost. Especially right around the time mankvill did when Monotheist was coming out.

What ever happened to that thread with the chick that came on here that one night claiming to be one of Tom G Warrior's ex love interests and started talking about his perverted fantasies and what disgusting people we all were for supporting him?

Sadly I just heard the bits and pieces after it happened. I remember reading about it the next day and the only reason I even remember it is because I was reading it while getting ready to walk at graduation. I'm still bummed about missing it.

I just remember the highlights. I think she posted letters Tom G had sent her about all the intimate fantasies he wanted to enact with her (Tom G is a very gifted writer, actually), or maybe she posted links to them. She talked about her other ex, Paul Di'Anno, and all the weird shit they used to do. She talked about her kids being out of control and how she didn't know how to move forward as a parent.

I think she posted pictures of herself too, or links to pictures.

It's all pretty hazy now.
