There are mumblings of Iron Maiden & Metallica too. The latter I don't believe, because they are a bit expensive lol, but, it's the only big festival they haven't played yet in belgium, so...

You gotta realise that he's the man who called Ron Thal better than Slash.

I don't believe neither. Metallica is too big and Evil Sharon will not let Maiden anywhere near Ozzy.

Seriously, if you don't know what you're talking about, you really shouldn't comment.

Ron Thal is massively more talented than Slash. He doesn't have anywhere near the stage persona etc., obviously, but he's a proper virtuoso player, Slash isn't. It's nothing to do with which version of GN'R you prefer, it's a simple case of playing talent.

It's like saying Satriani isn't a better player than Slash because you don't like Chickenfoot, i.e. outright stupid.

Haha, that's why I'm interested in guitars & basses ever since I was 12.

Satriani is an extremely good technical guitarist, and I don't even like instrumental guitar music THAT much. It's not bad, but it's not something I'll put on every day.

Looked them up in the database and it listed them as one of the bands for 2012.

Haha, that's why I'm interested in guitars & basses ever since I was 12.

 Then you should damn well know better. Unless of course you're now 13, in which case maybe you can be let off ;)

You liking of instrumental music is of course irrelevant :finger:

I'm more or less the same. There are some instrumental albums I love, but I don't listen to them very often. There are others that are just plain dull (usually guitarists made famous by being in a band who think they can also do instrumental music well). But liking it, and assessing the skill, are entirely different.

Unforunately for Thal, he's become known by most people as the GN'R player despite being a virtuoso solo artist first (and Lita Ford's lead guitarist, by the way). Therefore everyone's irrational anti-GN'R reactions cloud their judgement of him (and some of the others) as players.

Can't wait for this year, attending this the last 3 years, always a good time, not too many people/stages so the clashes are kept to a minimum.

Most of the line up is already tickling my fancy, hoping for Lynyrd Skynyrd and Cannibal Corpse.

Yes, the atmosphere at GMM is always very laidback.

ravenheart
12-06-2011, 05:00 AM
I've long heard from SRF regulars that they also go to Graspop because the atmosphere is so similar, and both sets of organisers actually know how to put a running order together, which most festivals don't have a clue how to do properly.

I definitely want to go sometime, but not this year. The line-ups is horrible. They'd have to pull some real surprises out of the bag for the rest of the bill to make me want to go.

Graspop definitely is touch and go with line ups, but as you say, the running order is always put together very well, minimum of clashes, with bands who compliment each other put one after the other and all that.

Is it confirmed that he's going to play the whole thing? Because according to the band their dates will be anniversary shows for BOTH Hall of The Mountain King and Doctor Butcher.

There's no way he'll be given a long enough set to play both of those.

There will also be a "special guest guitarist" in the band for the Summer tour. Bound to be Caffery.

Yeah, Doctor Butcher too. Wasn't sure whether that was a Savatage album or something since it didn't show up on Last.fm, so didn't include it in the post.

EDIT: Concerning the time he'll get... hey, it's Graspop, not Hellfest ;)

Doctor Butcher is a different band, with Jon and Caffery.

He'd need two hours to play them both. Nothing from the band says they're going to play either album in their entirety. Just that they're going to "honour" them. And they're going to play other JOP songs as well. I know Graspop are better than some for set times, but come on.

Yes, quite plainly.

Nope. They're playing some JOP songs too. I really can't see them playing all of either album at a festival. Otherwise the press release from the band would have said "we're going to play all of them".

You know what bands are like these days with the whole "in it's entirety" schtick. If they're going to do it, every press releases mentions it 254 times.

Kiss is more like Ki$$ anyway, but they at least play great live shows. Even though Rammstein has surpassed them in the use of pyro and "stuff" and it's not 100% the original band, I most definately want to see them during their upcoming tour.

For some reason the absence of Ace & Peter, which was of course mostly Simmons's fault, never bothered me as much as the so called Guns & Roses of today...

They have a broad range of songs though. Sabaton have one song which they just repeat. And it's only a mildly good song in the first place.

Australian band that broke up like 5 years ago(the singer was in Bury Your Dead for like one tour, and the guitarist was in Bleeding Through for a handful of years before joining Bring Me The Horizon)

They're huge in Europe, particularly in the festival scene. Same with Volbeat.

Solid additions in my opinion, Cancer Bats, Twisted Sister and Gojira all more than welcome. Hopefully the last headliner is worth the wait.

I don't, but my comment was more in the vein of "they are nothing but a carbon copy of Metallica's Load/Reload era with annoying vocals and yet hugely succesful for some reason".

Funny that this era is despised by many (history will judge both differently, you'll see) and not when it comes to Volbeat.

Anyway, I'm curious to see who the final headliner will be: Kiss only plays at Sonishpere in Europe this year, Iron Maiden is in America,...

But Graspop has been the vicitim of countless whining & moaning campaigns.

Not always unjustified, but if you don't like ONE band on a specific day YOU decide to go to see, e.g. Megadeth and a few others? If you don't like 90% of the bands, ok. Stay home then, like me a couple of times.

Okay, so let's add this up:

Friday (17): Ozzy, Slayer, Lamb of God, Kyuss, Amon Amarth, Black Label Society, DevilDriver, Paradise Lost, Sacred Reich, August Burns Red, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Possessed, Unearth, Ensiferum, Skeletonwitch, Winterfylleth

Saturday (10): Megadeth, Pennywise, My Dying Bride, Ihsahn, Exodus, Death Angel, Nasum, Adrenaline Mob, Alestorm, Leprous

Sunday (10): Guns N' Roses, Motorhead, Machine Head, Killswitch Engage, Children of Bodom, Behemoth, Gojira, Cancer Bats, Black Spiders

Friday = ouch. :bouville: I mean, I could go without Slayer (seen them already + seeing them in June), Black Label (seen them already), August Burns Red (seen them already), Cannibal Corpse (seeing them two other times this summer as well), Obituary (playing in Moscow less than a week later), and Unearth (seen them already), but that'll still leave the whole BS about bands playing on random stages.

Fair enough. SRF published most of their actual running order this week, so I've made almost all of my decisions for that. Just waiting for them to confirm times for Saint Vitus and Pentagram. Although, the slot I thought they were going to put Vitus in, which would have meant choosing between them and Soundgarden, has now gone to Dark Funeral, so it's looking good that I'll be able to see them :)

I will admit, SRF looks very good this year. How many stages are there and how many are active at a time?

Five stages. 2 and 3 play at the same time the whole way through. 1 and 4 are roughly at the same time. 5 can clash with any of the other 4, depends on the time.

Basically 1 alternates with 2 and 3. 4 and 5 are there just provide alternatives.
