Why do I feel that this was inevitable?

People bitching and moaning? Yeah I saw it coming too.

Come on guys, for those that actually went to the US tour, was it really that bad? Waaaah Mikael only growled for 2 bloodbath covers on the last show, waaaaaah. Opeth songs that are clean vocals and no distortion are just as evil as any Progressive Death metal song they have done in the past, and just as good.

If I could have afforded to go, I would have went and enjoyed every second of the show, and you fuckers got Katatonia as well.

Because trying to be cool, why do you really have to bitch about. Heritage is a great fucking album.

Are you so dense that you couldn't possibly understand why people feel jipped? :tp:

From being a fan of Opeth since Deliverance. I guess I must be dense. :tp:

The only reason, in my eyes, to feel jipped is because there is some rare songs in the set. But I know that's not why a lot of people are bitching about the set. I see nothing wrong with this set, and I see nothing wrong with the US sets. If anything, the US fans got a very special set because it's probably never going to happen again. As much as Mikael doesn't want to do Death Metal anymore, this current set shows that it's never going to fully go away. Even if it just means playing the songs from the past.

I don't feel jipped at all. I very much enjoyed their set on the last tour. It was a great experience, and I was completely happy/satisfied with what we were given. If you're going to bitch and moan about the American setlists, than you must not like Opeth as much as you think you do.

Look, the Opeth concert I saw was great, and I reviewed it and said I loved every second of it and it was amazing, but if this were the setlist instead, it probably would have been even better. End of story. If you call that bitching, than it's bitching. And no one here is a bigger Opeth fan than myself.

I not asking you why you think it was a good set. I'm asking you if you can understand why other people wouldn't like it. Do you think your view is the only correct one? Regardless of whether or not it would happen again, some people were going to be disappointed by the set. I'm not saying you're wrong for thinking it was a good, but your comment was immature and made you seem like a douche, hence why I responded the way I did.

This. Come on, MPF.

I'm not saying that the US setlist is superior to the Euro set. To me they are equal because they are two completely different tours. And I would have just as much fun at either show. For all different reasons. The Panda beat gif reposted might show that you are more disappointed then you are leading on...:D

Being a douche or not, I know I'm not the only one who feels the same way. Why get pissed about something you didn't get instead of enjoying the great show that you did get? and yeah you can say why do I get pissed about it at all, but at least in my defense, I'm defending the great shows that most of you saw, rather then defending a set you didn't see.

People get pissed about every setlist by every band ever, that's the internet and life. I can use Devin Townsend as the perfect example. My setlist I got back in October pales in comparison to the setlist of even the next night. but am I complaining, absolutely not because it was my favorite show of all time.

Case in point, again wether I'm a douche or not (that's not the worst I've been called tonight, but that's another story I might share in the general chat...possibly the reason why I made my post earlier) is that. Enjoy what you get, seriously. Unless it was a shitty show, which you can complain all you want if the show sucked, but if it was a great show show. Why bitch about it?

Well... yeah. Like I said, I loved the set I got. But Deliverance has always been my favorite song. So the first time I finally get to see Opeth, they are playing Deliverance on every date up until my tour. Then I don't get it on my tour. Then as soon as my tour is over, they start playing it again.

Yes. The panda sums up my inner feelings pretty well.

If it makes you feel any better, I've seen Opeth twice and I've yet to see Deliverance live. I've seen Master's Apprentice and Wreath, but never Deliverance. It's my favorite Opeth song tied with Bleak (another one I'll probably never see)

The first time I saw them, I had to leave during the encore, which was The Drapery Falls, and I learned after that Deliverance was the encore song. and during Progressive Nation 2008, they alternated Deliverance with Demon Of The Fall. I got Demon Of The Fall

It sucks. and Depending on when Opeth is coming back, hell I might never see it, but both shows I saw I wouldn't have traded for anything.

For those interested this was the set I saw during the Ghost Reveries Tour:

Ghost of Perdition
White Cluster
The Amen Corner
The Baying of the Hounds
Closure
Under the Weeping Moon
The Grand Conjuration
The Drapery Falls (Left in the middle :(
Deliverance Didn't get to see :( :( :(

I admit I was a bit disappointed by Opeth's set, but I still enjoyed the show a lot. Hearing "Face of Melinda" (one of my favorite songs) was incredible. I can't deny that I'm jealous of the set from this show though.

But this is good news; now we know that Opeth will be playing more of the old stuff in the future. And didn't somebody mention in another thread that they were planning to come back to the US in the spring?

EDIT:

Someone just changed the setlist online to the one for the US tour. I'll keep you all updated if anything changes ^__^

Damn... :( I was hoping that they might keep some of those songs for future tours.

I'm serious. I'm only attending for PoS anyway, so I could just stay and watch Opeth for nothing, but a) I've seen them 7 times, b) I don't really like 'Heritage', and c) it will take at least two hours to get home.

So all in all, fuck 'em, I'm going home.

I still don't think that just because they released a completely mellow album and played a completely mellow tour, it means that Mikael is tired of doing death metal. When did he ever say that?

He did say it. There was a listening party in Finland, from which came an article in Inferno Magazine. He said he'd been tired of extreme metal since the '90s and that for now growling in Opeth's music is over.

Now what in Dio's creation is so great about this set?

First of all, no Folklore. What the fuck is that shit?!

Second, if anything, I bet this show was a complete regression to what contaminated Opeth shows in the past 5 years i.e. all the pushy-shovy shit from the Kenny G look-alikes, and the show being 10 fucking hours long altogether... Take a cough drop Mikey.

If they never make a growls album again, whatever but so long as they still play the growl songs, I'm fine with that. Especially if they ever do a My Arms Your Hears, or Ghost Reveries full album tour

LIVEtoROCK86

At the shows in New York, Mikael assured us that it isn't the end of the death growls. He actually let out a death grunt and said to the crowd "don't worry don't worry...we're just trying something new for a little a bit, that's all"

Even in that interview (if you actually read past the headline), Mikael says: "I've never turned my back on anything and I'm not going to start now. It's not like I don't like that style of vocal delivery anymore...if the future songs require those vocals, then that's what I'll deliver." And I'm guessing what he means by "not being able to develop that style of singing anymore" is that he's perfected it and that's it, he's taken it as far as it can go but he's getting better as a singer and wants to develop that style fully. He still LIKES growling.

Mikael is writing music and growling is just one weapon in his arsenal...it doesn't mean he has to use it all the time.

He explicitly says, "when I'm 40 years old, I can't picture myself getting on stage and screaming". Or something along those lines.

Way to take it out of context...they are each interviewed about where they think they'll be in 10 years. Mikael just says "I can't picture myself being on stage screaming when I'm 40...maybe...Black Sabbath never though they would be successful and here they are 30 years later".

He's just saying he hopes he'll still be on stage doing what Opeth does in 10 years.
