Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994)

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/2/5/4/254.jpg?4341

This album is such a classic black metal record. This time frame is when the world was watching what would happen next in the Norwegian black metal scene. The murder of Euronymous by Varg Vikernes happened right before the initial release of the CD, which I think made this an instant classic before anyone even listened to it. To me personally what makes this album so great are Attila Csihar's sinister and inhuman vocals!!

Line Up:

Euronymous: Guitars
Hellhammer: Drums
Attila Csihar: Vocals
Count Grishnackh: Bass
Blackthorn: Guitars

Tracks to Check Out:

"Freezing Moon"
"Pagan Fears"
"From the Dark Past"
"De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas"

Acid - Maniac (1983)

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/2/4/3/7/2437.jpg

Acid was a female fronted speed metal band from Belgium, and I'm sure most people on here never heard of them. The music was very influenced by Motörhead. The drums are totally loud and pounding. Kate's vocals are what really draw me to this album. It's almost like she's saying "I'm a chick, but fuck you, I'll kick your ass just like the boys!!"

Line Up:

Kate De Lombaert: Vocals
Demon: Guitars
Dizzy Lizzy: Guitars
T-Bone: Bass
Anvill: Drums

Tracks to Check Out:

"America"
"Lucifera"
"Prince of Hell and Fire"
"Black Car"

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/3d/The_runaways%2C_queens_of_noise.JPG/220px-The_runaways%2C_queens_of_noise.JPG

Hey, I didn't say all these would be metal!! These gals were WAY ahead of their time!! With the help of flamboyant record producer, Kim Fowley. They rose to stardom mostly in Japan. This album is far superior to the debut album. Just great song writing.

Line Up:

Cherie Currie: Vocals
Joan Jett: Guitars / Vocals
Lita Ford: Guitars
Jackie Fox: Bass
Sandy West: Drums

Tracks to Check Out:

"I Love Playing With Fire"
"Queens of Noise"
"Neon Angels on the Road to Ruin"

Nunslaughter - Hex (2007)

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/1/5/4/1/154196.jpg

Cleveland, OH's Nunslaughter (or as some refer to as "Nun's Laughter") have been around since 1987. This is their 3rd full length (as they mostly release EPs and splits). It's not the most complex death metal in the world, but the songs are catchy and get right to the point. There is no love for Jesus Christ found on this album, which makes it great!!!

Line Up:

Don of the Dead: Vocals
Zack Massacre: Guitars
The Deserter: Bass
Jim Sadist: Drums / Vocals

Tracks to Check Out:

"Smell the Burning Churches"
"I Hate Christians"
"Unbaptized"
"This Is Fucking War"

Sargeist - Let the Devil In (2010)

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/2/8/1/3/281314.jpg

Finland's Sargeist has been satanizing the black metal world since 1999, and "Let the Devil In" is no exception. Full of blasphemy, Satanism, and just full on chaotic black metal!! No keyboards or female vocals, just pure fucking black metal...the way it should be!!!

Line Up:

Hoath Torog: Vocals
Shatraug: Guitars
Vainaja: Bass
Horns: Drums

Tracks to Check Out:

"Twilight Breath of Satan"
"Let the Devil In"
"From the Black Coffin Lair"
"A Spell to Awaken the Temple"

Venom - Temples of Ice (1991)

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/2/8/6/3/2863.jpg

Ok, I may get a lot of slack from the old schoolers about this one, but I loved the Tony "Demolition Man" Dolan albums!! To me Venom, always kicked major ass (except the last two albums). This album has the same speed metal riffs and and driving drums as always, and Tony's vocals are just as raspy and demonic as Cronos' were. The guitar work was also very well played on this record. Plus it's Satanic as Venom SHOULD be!!

Line Up:

Tony "Demolition Man" Dolan: Vocals / Bass
Mantas: Guitars
Abaddon: Drums
War Machine: Guitars

Tracks to Check Out:

"Even in Heaven"
"Temples of Ice"
"Arachnid"

Motörhead - Kiss of Death (2006)

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/1/2/1/8/121853.jpg

Ok first off, it's fucking Motörhead!!! I think this is their best album since 1993's "Bastards". The opening track "Sucker" just kicks you in the face as only Lemmy and the boys can do!! There will only be one and only Motörhead. Long live Lemmy!!!

Line Up:

Lemmy Kilmister: Vocals / Bass
Phil Campbell: Guitars
Mikkey Dee: Drums

Tracks to Check Out:

"Sucker"
"God Was Never on Your Side"

Black Sabbath - Never Say Die! (1978)

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/5/0/3/503.jpg

The last album to feature original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. A lot of people did not like this album, but me personally it's one of my favorites of the original line up. It shows a more mature Sabbath and Tony's guitar work is as great as ever!!

Line Up:

Ozzy Osbourne: Vocals
Tony Iommi: Guitars
Geezer Butler: Bass
Bill Ward: Drums / Vocals in "Swinging the Chain"
Don Airey: Keyboards (uncredited)

Tracks to Check Out:

Satanic, raw black metal project featuring Sammy Duet (Goatwhore, ex-Acid Bath, ex-Crowbar). Very dark and evil!! No pussy, poser shit here!! Just pure Satanic black metal the way it should be!! I really hope a second album comes out someday, but until then I have this excellent release to listen to!!

Line Up:

Sammy Duet: Guitars / Bass
Jordan Barlow: Vocals
Zak Nolan: Drums

Tracks to Check Out:

"Empire of Shit"
"Invoking the Twilight Void"
"Witch of the Sabbatic Fire"

Fear - The Record (1982)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e6/FearTheRecord.jpg/220px-FearTheRecord.jpg

Debut album from LA punk band Fear. True pissed off punk rock that doesn't give a fuck who they piss off. No pussy shit like Green Day here!! The thing that sets Fear apart from other punk bands to me is Lee Ving's vocals. The man can do traditional punk screams, but he also has a great singing voice as well. Such a dirty and pissed off album.

Line Up:

Lee Ving: Vocals
Philo Cramer: Guitar
Derf Scratch: Bass
Spit Stix: Drums

Tracks to Check Out:

Such a great hard rock record!! These German boys have been taking the world by storm since 1964. This album is so well written musically and Klaus' vocals are as great as always. This is also the last full length to feature Uli John Roth on guitars.

Line Up:

Klaus Meine: Vocals
Uli John Roth: Guitars
Rudolf Schenker: Guitars
Francis Buchholz: Bass
Herman Rarebell: Drums

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a8/Never_Mind_the_Bollocks.jpg/220px-Never_Mind_the_Bollocks.jpg

The one and only album from these British punk legends. It's very rare for a band to become so huge by only one record, but these guys did!! Like most punk bands of the 70s and 80s, this record was full of pissed off songs about who fucked up society is. Controversy has always surrounded this band from day one.

Line Up:

Johnny Rotten: Vocals
Steve Jones: Guitars / Bass
Paul Cook: Drums
Sid Vicious: Bass on "Bodies"

Tracks to Check Out:

Hobbs' Angel of Death - Hobbs' Angel of Death (1988)

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/1/8/4/8/18485.jpg?1905

Hailing from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Hobbs' Angel of Death was the Aussie version of Slayer. The band dissolved soon after the release but seven years later the band reformed to release their second album called "Inheritance" which was basically only distributed in Australia. These guys are as underground as it gets!! Very great stuff indeed!!

Line Up:

Peter Hobbs: Vocals / Guitars
Darren McMaster-Smith: Drums
Mark Wooley: Guitars
Phil Gresik: Bass

Napalm Death - Scum (1987)

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/9/6/1/961.jpg

The debut from British grindcore legends Napalm Death. Now as most my friends know, I am not a very big fan of these guys or of grindcore for that matter, but I do enjoy the first few albums. The songs are mostly very short (the longest being 02:28 and the shortest being 00:01). Very pissed off album, society really pissed these guys off!!

Line Up:

Nicholas "Nik Napalm" Bullen: Vocals (tracks 1-12), Bass (tracks 1-12)
Lee Dorrian: Vocals (tracks 13-28)
Justin Broadrick: Guitars (tracks 1-12)

First album from this Swedish death metal machine after they changed their name from "Crown of Thorns" to simply "The Crown". Very brutal and evil death metal. Pounding drums and blazing guitars make this album fucking great!! Johan's vocals are also performed very well!!

Line Up:

Johan Lindstrand: Vocals
Magnus Olsfelt: Bass
Marcus Sunesson: Guitars
Marko Tervonen: Guitars
Janne Saarenpää: Drums

Tracks to Check Out:

Blue Öyster Cult are one of those bands you can't compare to anyone else out there!! All their songs are so very different from each other. So much variety on each album, and that cannot be more true with this release. The album opens with the thrashy sounding "See You in Black".

Line Up:

Eric Bloom: Vocals / Guitars
Buck Dharma: Vocals / Guitars
Allen Lanier: Guitars / Keyboards
Danny Miranda: Bass (tracks 1, 4-9, 11)

The album is banned in Germany, which means it MUST be good, and it is!! Brutal and powerful music. Sickening and disturbing lyrics. I think Chris Barnes' vocals were at their best on this album.

Line Up:

Chris Barnes: Vocals
Jack Owen: Guitars
Bob Rusay: Guitars
Alex Webster: Bass
Paul Mazurkiewicz: Drums

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/1/2/6/126.jpg

When I think of doom metal, I think of bands like Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble, and of course the Swedish gods....Candlemass!! This album is so full of misery and darkness it just makes you depressed!! So much agony in Messiah's voice through out the songs. A very haunting release!! Last album to feature (and last album I gave a shit about until 2005's self titled album) vocalist Messiah Marcolin.

Line Up:

Messiah Marcolin: Vocals
Leif Edling: Bass
Mats "Mappe" Björkman: Guitars

Malevolent Creation - Stillborn (1993)

This album recieved horrible reviews due to the very poor production. The band originally wanted to go back and have the album re-mastered but due to Roadrunner's greed, they wouldn't pay for it. The songs however, I think are very well written and if the production wasn't so poor, this would be considered one of their best releases.

Onslaught - In Search of Sanity (1989)

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/4/7/1/2/4712.jpg

While it's a great record, it's nowhere as great as "Power From Hell" and "The Force" were. Not as much brutality and evil on this album. The album was originally recorded with Sy Keeler on vocals, but the label wanted more commercial success so they made the band re-record it with Steve Grimmett (Grim Reaper) on vocals. If this album was released by a different band, it would of became a classic, but I guess Onslaught fans knew what they wanted, and this wasn't it.

Line Up:

I did not know that. Love this album too, my only complaint is I don't like Gene's vocal performance on some songs. I feel like the album would be stronger if Paul did the vocals on Saint and Sinner and Killer. I think he does a good job on Rock and Roll Hell, I Love it Loud, and War Machine though.

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/8/0/7/5/8075.jpg?1840

Now I am NOT usually a fan of live albums, but this one is so historical I had to buy it. The frontcover bearing a photograph of Mayhem's vocalist, Dead (Per Yngve Ohlin), after his suicide in April 1991. The production is quite terrible (remember it's a live bootleg!!)

Line Up:

Dead: Vocals (tracks 1-8)

Not my favorite Celtic Frost album by any means, but I do enjoy a lot of the songs. And their last good album until their comeback, "Monotheist" in 2006. Has many elements of Avant-garde but also has some of the elements that were on previous albums.

Was supposed to be the last Hypocrisy album, but due to immense fan response the band decided to forge on. The album is your typical Hypocrisy album (post - Osculum Obscenum) which means it's great melodic death metal. These guys are one of my favorite bands and will be featured on this list a few times!!

Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon (1993)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/61/Beheritmoonalbumcover.jpg

Not your typical black metal album from these gods from Finland. Sure, there's your normal raw black metal songs on here, but also features slow, hypnotic, droning guitar work, and even some ambient-synth type intros. The vocals almost sound like he's whispering them, which is quite unique. All and all it's a great record and a must have for black metal fans.

*Interesting note: My good friend Dave Sandy wrote the lyrics for "Salomon's Gate"*

Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses (1993)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f7/Bloodykiss.jpg

The second full length album from the Brooklyn gods, and the begining of their more goth sound. Half the album was in the style of the first album (Slow, Deep, and Hard) where the other half of the album was more goth-friendly. Very dark and sorrowful album. Was also the first album on Roadrunner Records to go Gold and Platinum. This is also the album that lauched Type O Negative into the popularity of mall-goths world wide.

Finally someone who agrees with me! I fucking love that album. It's sad that it seems to be forgotten just because of the production.

First album back after retiring in 1983. This also his first album to be heavy metal. Such a fantastic album!! I can listen to this album from front to back without skipping a single song!!

Interesting note: The track "The Great American Success Story" was supposed to be the theme song to the Rodney Dangerfield film Back to School, but was not used.

Kip Winger: Bass
David Rosenberg: Drums

Interesting choice. I've never been crazy about this album but I like a few songs. Teenage Frankenstein is catchy and I love Thrill My Gorilla for it's ridiculous lyrics. I could never stand The Man Behind the Mask though, that song is waaaaayy to poppy.

Such a great Satanic old school death metal album!! Some of the tracks featured on this album were written while the band went under the name of Nihilist. I really love how they put the Phantasm theme in the middle of the title track!! This and Clandestine were the only good albums by them in my opinion.

Just caught up...holy shit  Damn dude!

Really digging Hypocrisy, both the newer album and the older one. Haven't heard that Krisiun or Marduk album, solid stuff. Angelcorpse is fucking sick. I couldn't find a studio version of anything from the Goreaphobia demo on youtube, only a live version, which sounded pretty cool, but I couldn't find any download links. Crucifyre is really cool, gotta look into those guys more. Impiety= Sepultura= I didn't think Obituary after their first two albums were any good, but Frozen in Time seems pretty solid.

You must be really bored today  Give people time to comment!

So much darkness and Satanism in the lyrics!! The music is fast and heavy!! Even Ronnie James Dio stated in the book "The Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal" that the album was "monumental in developing the death metal style, the first death metal album.

Interesting note: For the extreme lyrics and uses of the word "fuck", the album was one of the earliest (in 1985) to receive the RIAA's Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics sticker.
