" It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their long time guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR’s current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans. At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today. We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss. A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him.

the band has announced they will continue to tour

and that they will be retiring the character Flattus Maximus in Cory's honor

That's a mature move, I think. He's "gone back to his home planet" according to David Brockie.

Y'know, I've never been a fan of GWAR. Their shows seem fun and all, but I can't get into the music. With that said, I'm so impressed with how Dave is handling the public. I've known he's an intelligent guy for a while now, but the letter he wrote explaining why the band is continuing on really cemented what a class act this guy is. Great choice retiring the character. If anyone is attending tonight's show, I'd love to hear how it goes.

I didn't think they would retire the character, the only time they ever retired a character that actually played an instrument was Nippelus Erectus. I wonder what a new character would be like.

I have a friend going so hopefully I should know soon enough

Man, I've never been a fan of their music, but their shows are so goddamn fun. I don't see how anyone who even remotely likes metal could have a bad time at a Gwar show.

Not true. Lee Beato, Cornelius Carnage, Balsac (the non bear trap wearing bassist), Hans Orifice and Sleazy's brother who was the pre- Orderus vocalist have all been replaced by new characters.

Cory Smoot was a nice dude and a pretty good guitarist, but I wasn't a fan of the direction he took the bands music. Still blows, and I am shocked they are able to continue to play every night when one of their friends and bandmates has just died. I got tickets to the SF show after it was announced that they are still touring, for some reason it made me feel some sense of obligation to see 'em now.

RIP

Forgot about them. I was kinda just thinking about from the time they started making albums. All the pre Hell-O stuff I often forget about.

They did the show as a 4 piece

and Oderus said Flattus went back to his home planet "without our fucking permission"

Did they do the whole show in costume? I know when Dimebag died, they did an unmasked tribute.

The shows in Medford and San Fransisco have been canceled so the band can attend Cory's memorial services.
