View Full Version : MetallicBrian666's token "look at me, I can make lists too" Top 15 Grind Albums

My favorite genre is grind. I was bored, so I made a list. I will post said list here as I finish individual reviews, no set schedule or anything. It's entirely my personal favorites, so there may be a few "must haves" that aren't included. Sorry if I'm breaking the golden rules of music listening with that....anywho

If I don't fuck this up worse than Seth's "not dying" plan, hopefully one or more people will either A. find a new band they dig, B. check out that album they've been meaning to, or C. use it as the excuse to finally look into that crazy grindcore that everyone's buzzing about. If not, at least I found an outlet for my boredom. First installment will probably come today. Fuck you.

15. Exhale - Blind
http://www.code7music.com/store/images/cover_blind_DB014_300x300dp.jpg
This album is a quality slice of grind with that good old buzzsaw distortion (little known fact, the Swedish are born with a Boss HM-2 instead of a placenta). These guys are a sick modern grind group, and if it weren't for a couple of questionable parts (borderline metalcore-ish), this album probably would've been higher on the list. Thankfully, though, the rest of the album is solid and definitely worth a listen. If you dig Swedish death this will probably be an easy transition into grind.

14. Wormrot - Dirge
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sIKnwvLRXAQ/TZEdpbi5RkI/AAAAAAAAAao/1JUBOsQC1d0/s400/wormrotdirge.jpg
Now I know what you're thinking: "GASP! I'VE HEARD OF THIS ALBUM RECENTLY, YOU SELLOUT!"

While that may be the case, I've really enjoyed Dirge since it came out and it's potentially the catchiest grind release I've ever heard. I love the fact that the album just sounds like 3 dudes jamming in a room. There appears to only be one guitar track, which is cool because it makes the recording more true to their live performance. Clocking in at about 17 minutes, this album will fuck your face off with pure Insect Warfare-influenced chaos and never call you again.

13. Anal Cunt - Defenders Of The Hate
http://images.bizrate.com/resize?sq=450&uid=602185671
Not sure how many people will agree with this choice, but whatever.

While I do appreciate most of AxCx's gay discography, they really stepped up for this EP(yes I'm reviewing the original 7" EP, not the reissue with bonus tracks. Fuck off). The highlight of the album is the drumming. John Gillis' unfuckwithable militant assault is the driving force behind the more structured than usual AxCx sound. For a band that are widely regarded as the worst band ever (and understandably so), this album is a solid slice of grind that will beat your face into the ground. I would even go as far as comparing it to Discordance Axis, minus the melody and experimentation (and talent)

12. Excrementory Grindfuckers - Headliner Der Herzen
http://mediaboom.org/uploads/posts/2010-07/thumbs/1278608883_5767.jpg
Yes, comedy grind just appeared on a "top 15 grindcore albums" list

While Excrementory are not meant to be taken seriously whatsoever, beneath the ridiculousness lies a heavy as fuck grind machine who know what the fuck they're doing(not to mention they're German.) The production on this album is absolutely killer, with the deliciously crisp guitar tone really standing out. The album is easily EG's best, with their unique style of blending grind with pop and a plethora of other genres sounding smoother than ever. While yes, this may not be a "true" grind release by some people's standards, it's very entertaining and is definitely worth a listen.

11. Pig Destroyer - Explosions In Ward 6
http://www.mediaboom.org/uploads/posts/2009-04/1239829289_folder.jpg

This album is the epitome of ugly and disgusting grind. The album features many strange riffs and time changes, but never strays too far from the path like their later albums. Every song is a satisfyingly harsh breath of fresh air and draws you in for every teeth-grinding second. It's easily my favorite Pig Destroyer album and I recommend you get on that shit if you haven't already.

10. The Kill - 2000 Demo
http://i.ytimg.com/vi/O8s440RU4Zg/0.jpg

The first thing that comes to mind when listening to this demo is that it is what violence sounds like. (Fun fact, their debut EP was called The Soundtrack To Your Violence). Every track is lightning fast, with the drums right up front to blast your teeth in. While Soundtrack To Your Violence is a great EP, in my opinion it just doesn't come close to the level of intensity presented in their first demo. If you are a fan of Wormrot, these guys are definitely for you.

The entire demo in all of its glory:

9. Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse
http://www.metalsucks.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/agorapocalypse.jpg

While all of ANb's discography is phenomenal, I believe that Agorapocalypse is their finest hour. While the song lengths are increased and they do slow it down at points, the drum machine-driven aggression is still there with the inclusion of Katherine Katz on some of the vocals. I feel she is the highlight of this album and her chaotic screams really bring the songs to life. This album is heavy as fuck when it wants to be and fast as fuck when it wants to be and should satisfy all fans of grindcore and extreme music in general.

8. Rotten Sound - Murderworks
http://www.metal-archives.com/images/7/2/6/0/7260.jpg

Another album with that lovely buzzsaw distortion. Murderworks is a vicious release with razor sharp production, and is a modern grind classic. Throughout the course of the album, you are pulverized by sick guitar riffs and the fantastic drumming by Kai Hahto (who left the band to join Wintersun). If you are a fan of Napalm and/or Nasum, you will dig this album.

7. Noisear - Subvert The Dominant Paradigm
http://ring.cdandlp.com/osmoseproductions/photo_grande/114885863.png

Noisear have always been a solid grind band, but their latest release Subvert The Dominant Paradigm is arguably the most forward-thinking grindcore release since Discordance Axis' The Inalienable Dreamless. The album features fantastic musicianship and a refreshingly interesting approach to the traditional grindcore sound. I love the usage of guitar volume swells (as heard in Global Warning) and the killer backing shrieks from their bassist. If I had to describe this album, it would be World Downfall-era Terrorizer experimenting with their sound to all hell just to see what they could create. A must-listen, no doubt.

6. Insect Warfare - World Extermination
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cm1LzVnJNq4/TZJOMv22NRI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/RctsMKTWPI4/s1600/iw.jpg

This album is amazing. Insect Warfare are one of the tightest grind bands ever (musicianship-wise, not "yo that band is tight, son") and World Extermination is simply a masterpiece of the genre. The production is very powerful, and while the bass is almost completely inaudible, it doesn't sound empty. Every track rips as they alternate from fast to faster to slow to fastest. Listen to this album now, pussy.

5. Magrudergrind - Magrudergrind
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_vMHp87NVUqQ/SiKGhvNEmvI/AAAAAAAAAAM/xogurP_F6_s/s320/capa.jpg

Magrudergrind are, in my opinion, the best grind band out there today. They have a signature sound, with only one guitar with an HM-2 driven distortion that is heavier than most bands with bassists and Avi's high screams. Their self-titled full length is full of heavy as fuck grind that is laced with samples and even a rap passage (Heavier Bombing). While I certainly wouldn't call them "accessible", Magrudergrind are definitely a good way for someone who's into punk and/or metal to make the transition over to grind. I mean fuck, they made an EP with a car company's money without compromising their sound and gave it to their fans for free. If that isn't a victory for grind and extreme music in general, I don't know what is.

So fucking good.......Anticapital is the first and best effort by these Florida grind masters, and it shreds. From the ominous first notes of Socialized Crucifixion you know that you're in for a treat, and you indeed are. I love that the album is produced more like a death metal album than a grind album, aside from the drums being more forward in the mix. If you consider yourself a fan of grind and don't dig this album, fuck you.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-H93JKoYHnsg/TYyxOOltlgI/AAAAAAAAAgo/IEjdZK6_5S8/s320/Discordance_Axis_-_The_Inalienable_Dreamless_cover.jpg

The most chaotically soothing album ever recorded. DxAx's last effort is by far their best and is just overall ridiculous. The bizarre riffs, the on and off blasts, and Jon Chang's absurdly piercing screams and brutal lows all come together to make one hell of an album. While I do love Chang's new project, Gridlink, they will never be able to touch the excellence that is The Inalienable Dreamless.

Insect Warfare broke up before the album was even out on Earache (I think Earache put it out 2 years after its initial release.) They did some noise shows without some of the members and that made everyone all 'ehhh' so they stopped, then there was a brief 'reunion' for some shows in Europe that was only recognized by half the band or something. It's stupid and I wish I had seen them. I talked to Dave from PLF this summer and apparently he and some of the ex-IW members are working on a grind project, so that sounds like it will pretty much be in the same vein, and I'm looking forward to it. He said that the rest of the band isn't really even interested in extreme music anymore, I think one of them plays in a flamenco band.

2. Terrorizer - World Downfall
http://www.examiner.com/images/blog/wysiwyg/image/terrorizer.jpg

If you consider yourself a grind fan and have never heard this album, you should be ashamed of yourself. Everything about this album is fantastic, specifically the killer riffs of Jesse Pintado (RIP) and the sick blasts by Pete Sandoval. David Vincent also performs bass duties on this album, and vocals are handled by Oscar Garcia of Nausea fame. If I had to describe this album, it would be the grindcore equivalent of Sepultura. Fuck yeah.

1. Napalm Death - From Enslavement To Obliteration
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51tEakopbJL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

This album is the greatest fucking grindcore release of all time, in my opinion at least. Many swear by the Repulsion's Horrified or side A of Scum, but neither hold a candle to FETO in my eyes. Everything about this album is spectacular. Bill Steer's guitar is a shredding wall of sound, Shane Embury's bass crawls at the bottom of the mix in the most disgusting way possible, Mick Harris' blasts of pure primal rage destroy everything in their path, and Lee Dorrian's vocals are the human voice's equivalent of a straight razor to the jugular vein. The lyrics are extremely well written and socially aware, and would probably shock most outsiders that such beautiful lyrics can be delivered in such a chaotic manner. This album is a killer from start to finish and easily my favorite album of all time, if you haven't heard it yet do yourself a favor and fucking do so. I still think Barney-era Napalm is awesome and I look forward to seeing them live, but this album (and the FETO lineup themselves) makes them sound like a fucking joke.

Great fucking choice!!! :D I can't wait to hear the new Terrorizer album when it comes out. I'm curious to see how Dave's involvement will affect the band.
I'm also interested to see how the chick from Resistant Culture affects their sound. As long as we don't get a Darker Days Ahead part 2 I'll probably be happy.

Also, according to Pete on his Facebook there will be a tour to support the album :D

Terrorizer needs to tour. They were suppose to tour years ago, then Jesse died :( I wonder if they'll have someone fill in for Dave cause the lack of being frontman might piss him off.

I just realized you never included Repulsion:nonono: They deserved some mentioning at some point. I also think FETO is one of the best grind albums ever, so good choice for number one;)

I said at the beginning that there were some "must-haves" that weren't included. Tis my opinion, yo.

I also didn't include Brutal Truth.

3. Discordance Axis - The Inalienable Dreamless

That's true. You put a lot of respectable bands in this list, so props to that. There are too many great grindcore bands to be able to easily compile them into a top 15 list.
