Haha. Good question ;)

Oh, and just to spoil it for you guys, I decided that I'm NOT going to include System of a Down in here, because tons of people on here love them and this list is supposed to be controversial. So the albums are probably gonna just be nu metal for the most part.

No, this is like JD's list. Everybody hates deathcore, but JD is serious about liking it. Everybody hates nu metal, but I'm serious about liking it (if not as a guilty pleasure). I'm not gonna do alternative metal stuff like SOAD, Faith No More, etc. because that stuff is legit and I know a bunch of people like it.

Korn - Korn

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/16/Korn-Korn.jpg/220px-Korn-Korn.jpg

This was the second Korn album I got, I think. It's fair to say that this album spawned the entire nu metal genre as a whole. The nu metal sound that we all know was created here. As there was nothing like this ever recorded before, this was quite unique, and, thusly, somewhat difficult to describe. Basically, I'd call this album "edgy." At times, it's just TOO much to listen to. Jonathan Davis switches between his gay yelling/screaming and gay spoken-word singing about his daddy issues and somewhat cool rapping/skatting. Combined with the extremely downtuned guitars and funky bass, Korn produces an... uncomfortable atmosphere on their self-titled debut album. That's the only way I can put it, honestly. Jonathan Davis is an ANGRY motherfucker on here, and probably their only album in which he's being authentic.

Also, if you listen to deathcore, you can probably hear some of the genre in here. Just sayin.'

Korn - Take A Look in the Mirror

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61ALMTOPcPL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Okay, so this album was sort of a return to their original sound. They did it much better on the debut, but I really like this album, too. This was also my first Korn album  so nostalgia may be a factor in it.

This album isn't as edgy as Korn but in many ways it sounds much darker. The guitar is much more crunchier-sounding - this really does resemble nu-metal. JD's vocals have gotten a lot more pedophiliac since the debut, and they do get on my nerves a bunch. He sings a LOT more on this album, too. But Nas comes and saves the day on "Play Me" :D

Seriously, I don't expect anyone to like this album, even those who liked Korn. Just sayin.'

Papa Roach - Infest

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/48/Papa_Roach_Infest.jpg

All right, first things first: if you deny that you ever liked this album at some point in your teenage life, then you're lying. I discovered this album around 12 (figured out that this was the band who did "Last Resort") and bought it immediately. This is such an angst-ridden record. Hell, this is like the epitome of nu metal right here. Downtuned guitar, rapping, turntablism, angsty lyrics. Not as dark/edgy as Korn, but still very heavy. The title track that opens the record is great; "Last Resort" is even better. Still to this day, there's a bunch of catchy shit on here. And, today, on my first listen in a long time, I was pleasantly surprised that there are some pretty sick metal riffs here, not just your typical nu-metal bullshit.

Slipknot - Iowa

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SzhEa5nIQXY/SVaBGoExQVI/AAAAAAAAAKI/TBdfW_qO4jk/s320/Slipknot_-_Iowa.jpg

If you ever meet a metalhead who likes Slipknot, this'll probably be his favorite album (It's the "cool" album to like). While it still is clearly nu-metal, it's pretty fuckin' heavy. Hell, if this isn't the heaviest nu-metal album you've ever heard, then I'm just like...wat...

Anyway, yeah. This album is killer. If "Disasterpiece" isn't the heaviest song Slipknot has ever written, then I dunno what is (well...actually I do ;)). There's still plenty of turntablism/nu-metal bullshit to go around, but the riffs are just so goddamn heavy. The angry, faux-Satanic lyrics are also great. I've always liked Slipknot's lyrics; they go beyond the typical angsty suicide bullshit. Anyway, I don't know what else to say, I'm not very good at these short blurb things

(Spoiler Alert: This is my least favorite Slipknot album :D)

New Abortion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEa2RDpDZQk)

I remember when The 1st 2 songs for this cd leaked on Napster. They were Heretic Anthem and Disasterpiece. As much as I liked the 1st cd and owned 3 versions of it with bonus tracks, these songs never clicked with me. Over time they both grew on me some but ironically enough my favorite tracks off this cd are the commercial-ish tracks. The 1st time I heard the entire cd I liked The Shape, Left Behind, My Plague & Everything Ends the most. Then I went through a phase of Skin Ticket, People = Shit, New Abortion, Metabolic and Iowa. I still really like most of those songs especially Skin Ticket.

For some reason the Chorus lyrics of those 1st 2 songs just rub me the wrong way. They always struck me as being written by 8th graders and even to this day I can't really get into them. Not bad songs and pretty cool live but those choruses are comical and not cool in any way to me. Liberate and Eyeless on the other hand...

Yeah, I gotcha man. People=Shit and The Heretic Anthem may not be angsty teenage bullshit, but the songs/lyrics are kinda cheesy  Also, I've never really liked 'Left Behind." It's so out of place on Iowa and it seems like a horrible attempt at going mainstream. Fortunately, they mastered that art on Vol. 3... ;)

This used to be my favorite 'Knot album because it was so fucking heavy, but then I realized that heavy /=/ good.

Out of all the big nu-metal bands (Slipknot, Disturbed, Korn, etc.) I liked Slipknot the best. I dressed up as Corey during their Iowa days for Halloween once! It was pretty awesome. Most of the songs I still like are from this album.

And the fucking soundtrack version of My Plague still rips.

I guess I equate nu-metal mostly with the down-tuning and Linkin Park really didn't have a lot of that. Same reason I don't think Rage Against The Machine is nu-metal either (although the only thing Rage and nu-metal have in common are rapped vocals).

Slipknot- Slipknot

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_eaSNo87GsXw/Sbbf40E37bI/AAAAAAAAAA8/bhsFWUUXwj0/s320/340732_CD_L_F.jpg

I remember the first time I heard this album. I was just previewing random shit on TowerRecords.com (my favorite hobby at the time) and I stumbled upon this. This was the heaviest thing I had ever heard. Wow...just wow. I got my mom to drive me to Best Buy and I picked up the CD. I immediately opened it in the car and started flipping through the booklet. My mom saw it, unfortunately, and she forced Best Buy to take it back for a full refund because they didn't display the Parental Advisory sticker. Yes, even to this day I am shocked at the ease at which Corey Taylor shouts "fuck" the whole time. Gives the album personality, I think

This is the most nu-metal sounding of Slipknot's albums, but it's still heavy as fuck. It's kinda obvious at this point that Slipknot is the heaviest nu-metal band to have ever existed; indeed, I consider them sort of a nu-metal/death metal hybrid (BRING ON THE HATE). But just listen to Sic, Eyeless, and Surfacing. Wow...just fucking wow. This is just so fucking angry but it's so tongue-in-cheek, too. I love it. Now, most Slipknot albums have at least one skippable track, and this one is no exception. Wait and Bleed is probably one of the worst songs I've ever heard, and no doubt Slipknot's worst song. Spit it Out is also extremely heavy on the nu-metal, but it's more fun to listen to, as it is just so cheesy, especially with the rapping. There's also a LOT of turntablism/sampling on this record, more so than other nu-metal albums even. It's cool how they can be so heavy but so...electronic at the same time.

There's some filler at the end of the album but meh, it all evens out.

(sic) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC5ecWH8QgM)
Eyeless (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgDoVQxY1VU)

I'm with you. It's hard to choose between this and Iowa, as they each have their own style. You're not wrong with the death metal influence though. In Choosing Death, a bunch of guys at the end say how Slipknot have that influence and get a bunch of people further into the heavier stuff.

I might sound crazy for saying this but I have a hard time finding 6 cd's of all time better than Slipknot - s/t let alone 6 nu-metal cd's.

When you factor in the 20th Anniversary copy I have with Snap and the other bonus tracks this is by miles the best Nu-Metal cd every released to me. Snap is probably the best driving song ever penned along with Bad Habit by Offspring. Eyeless and Liberate are Top 10 also and I'll never get tired of those songs especially cranked on 10 while driving like a lunatic.

This cd was one of the 1st cd's that really incorporated fun and anger flawlessly for me. Sprinkle in the evil of Purity and Scissors and you have one for the annals...

My favorite Slipknot record, an a real eye-opener for me. I remember stumbling upon (sic) one day in 7th grade, knee deep in my Metallica phase, and I was forever changed. I remember downloading the album, and trying as hard as I could to hide that fact from my parents, but they eventually found it, made me delete it, grounded me, and took away my mp3 player. :flame:

I listen to this album, and it's just in a totally different league from every other nu-metal album. There is way, way more intensity here than any of their contemporaries. It's fast as hell, so I can totally see the death metal influence. Eyeless still has one of my favorite breakdowns ever at the very end. (sic) was the first song with screaming I ever heard. I just remember listening to that song over... and over... and over... and it still doesn't get boring. Oh, and:

6. Linkin Park - Meteora

It's not my favorite Linkin Park album (obvious favorite is obvious) but it's definitely not bad. In fact, it's pretty damn good. On this one they started venturing more into softer, more commercial territory (Breaking the Habit, Numb, Somewhere I Belong), but there's still a lot of heavy nu-metal stuff. Their songwriting definitely improved on this one, too.

Disturbed – The Sickness
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a2/TheSickness.jpg

OOOHWAAAHAAAAHAAAAHAAH

I originally wasn't considering this album for the list, but only because I forgot about it. Now, let's get oone thing straight here: this album is on the list for one song, and ONE SONG ONLY. And I'm not gonna say what the name of the song is because it should be obvious. But this song I'm speaking of? Along with “Last Resort,” it is probably the definitive Nu-metal song.

Disturbed took a very aggressive approach to nu-metal, sorta like Slipknot but Disturbed don't really sound like Slipknot. It's still got the downtuning and occasional turntablism and everything but this album doesn't really have the tongue-in-cheek whimsicalness of the modern-day genuis known only as Fred Durst. I could say it's serious...but it's hard not to laugh at lyrics like this:

I've been waiting my whole life for just one fuck
And all I needed was just one fuck
How can you say that you don't give a fuck
I find myself stupified, coming back again
All I wanted was just one fuck
One tiny little innocent fuck
And when I feel like I'm shit out of luck
I find myself stupified, coming back again
All the people in the left wing rock
And all the people in the right wing rock
And all the people in the underground rock
I find myself stupified, coming back again
All the people in the high rise rock
And all the people in the projects rock
And all la gente in the barrio rock
I find myself stupified, coming back again
^what in the actual fuck is he saying?! Is he actually saying something metaphorical and I'm too dumb to figure it out???!!!

Disturbed in the house, we're droppin' plates
I'm droppin' plates on your ass, bitch
^that's from “Droppin' Plates,” which is no doubt the most nu-metal song on the album complete with rapping and those awesome electronics :rocker:

Also, they cover the song “Shout” by Tears for Fears, which is completely unnecesary but extremely hilarious. But you wanna know the best part? They called it “Shout 2000”:lol:

All in all this is a pretty essential nu-metal album in my opinion, if not for one song. But the rest of the album's not bad. fuckin' beast album cover, too.

GET UP GET DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS
LET YOUR HATE FLOW INTO ME

No mommy, don't do it again
Don't do it again
I'll be a good boy
I'll be a good boy, I promise
No mommy don't hit me
Why did you have to hit me like that, mommy?
Don't do it, you're hurting me
Why did you have to be such a bitch
Why don't you
Why don't you just fuck off and die
Why can't you just fuck off and die
Why can't you just leave here and die
Never stick your hand in my face again bitch
FUCK YOU
I don't need this shit
You stupid sadistic abusive fucking whore
How would you like to see how it feels mommy
HERE IT COMES GET READY TO DIE
