View Full Version : METALSETLISTS: mobile friendly?

I don't know about the other users here, but about 1/2-3/4 of the time I use this site, I'm accessing it from my iPhone. If I could make a graph or chart of my iPhone usage, about 85-90% of the time I use it is for this site.

I don't know how feasible this would be, financially or physically, but would it ever be possible to make a mobile-friendly version of this site for iPhones, Droids, and other smartphones? It's not too difficult as it is, but the icons are rather small on my screen and I have to scoll around a lot to access things. The mobile version of Metalsucks.com, for example, is set up perfectly and cleanly so I load it fast and never have to zoom in or out. If I could change any 1 website right now, I would want to create a similar model for this site.

Thoughts, anyone? Is anyone else in my position?

I know what you mean. Do we have any techies/web programmers on here?

Yeah. Here are some interesting links:

I don't know who exactly built this website or anything, but if a techie on this site could create a mobile-version that's detected when I use my iPhone, I would be eternally grateful! I'd probably send you a letter of gratitude signed with my kiss in red lipstick.

I've never worked with websites before... I mean, I guess I could potentially contribute, but I know web design and HTML are a different beast from C++ and java programs. If somebody wanted to show me the ropes, I would be willing to help out. But I'm very much a noob in that field :eyes:

Since the guy who owns the website (presumably) rarely visits anymore, this request may be falling on deaf ears.

Do you know who it is? Can we contact him at all?

Ha, it's so weird how the newer members don't even know Pavo. Maybe if his lazy ass posted more, we wouldn't have this problem ;)

I'm a web designer and developer and I can certainly say that making the existing site mobile-friendly would be a huge undertaking. It would basically be easier to move to a whole new platform with a responsive layout off the bat, but then you run into the issue of migrating all of the existing content; which is also a large project.

MetalSucks in on Wordpress and that is the default Wordpress mobile theme. Fundamentally making a blog mobile is much easier than doing so with a forum.

I see what you're saying. That's unfortunate. Thanks for the input!

I'm going to keep thinking about it for a little bit when I have some free time and I will see if I can come up with anything.

Doesn't ring a bell. Was that his username?

Yes. He's neither here nor there, and he's a Jedi Master.

Oh, I think that was Allen. If memory serves me right, Pavo (or maybe it was Bouville?) said he went all weirdo Christian and disavowed metal or something.

I'd read it. Though, you'd still never get the straight answers on some things.

I just thought it was weird that Yoda's "last visit date" is N/A.

And why was Bouville banned?

I don't know for sure, but it may have been Pavo just having a bit of fun. Bouville hasn't be here for years; he was doing archeaology down in South America and wasn't around much.

Was Bouville a Debbie-downer or something? I mean...

Nah, just a cranky geezer :D Also a huge Blaze fan, and started the whole "Blaze Is the Messiah" meme (which never really gained much traction here, but was big on the IMBB).

Bumpin' this thread, since I found this website:
http://www.forumrunner.net/

Its an app that lets you browse forums in a mobile-friendly manner. I don't know if Metalsetlists is usable by this app, But I think it's possible to be supported by it with a few changes... maybe. Can someone look into this, possibly?

jd091
06-29-2011, 04:23 PM
Yeah, I think this might be very possible! Whoever officially runs this website, please read this:

http://www.forumrunner.net/?p=register

I don't know if it's possible since I don't run this website, but I would be happy to contact these people and see if the app can support this forum.

"How Do I Sign Up?

Getting Forum Runner up and running is a simple process. First, you need to create an account with us and then visit our Forum Manager where you specify your forum information. If you run multiple forums, you can sign as many up as you like. Once you input this information, you can download a customized plug-in for your version of forum software that you simply upload to your site. Once the plug-in is installed, you then request for the forum to be verified by our servers. Once it is verified, your listing will appear in our database and on all of the Forum Runner user's mobile phones!

Is It Secure?

The Forum Runner plug-in inherits the security framework that your forum software provides. If you have banned someone from your site, they will not be able to log into it via Forum Runner, and if you have private forums or password-protected forums, Forum Runner honors those permissions.

Forum software is constantly being updated, and you should always run the latest version of your forum software as well as the latest version of Forum Runner to get all bug fixes and new features. When you create an account, you should put a valid e-mail address so you can be kept in the loop regarding new versions of the Forum Runner plug-in.

What Forum Software Is Supported?

Currently, vBulletin versions 3.6.x, 3.7.x, 3.8.x, 4.0.x, and 4.1.x, XenForo versions 1.0.x, phpBB versions 3.0.x, and myBB versions 1.6.x are fully supported. We are constantly working to add different forum software support. If you have suggestions, please post up in our Feature Requests forum.

What About Modifications?

If you run modifications to your forum software, it may cause issues with the Forum Runner plug-in. We try to work alongside any other running plug-ins, but we cannot anticipate every case. If you install Forum Runner on your site and something is not working correctly, please post up in our Bug Reports forum, and we will try to get everything fixed."

I mean, I can access it fine from my iPhone, its just I hate having to zoom in and scroll around since it isn't optimized for a small, mobile screen.
