Portal and Ghost sound nothing alike.

Portal is harsh progressive/avant-garde death metal.

I've said Ghost look like a glam rock Portal since I first saw them, but they didnt rip anything off.
The Curator didn't even have a pope had till the year Ghost formed, and he's certainly not the first "black pope" in the history of music.
The rest of the band look somewhat like Portal, but more like any other "culty" black metal band.
And Ghost is barely a metal band, so comparing the two musically is ridiculous.

I don't remember the magazine, but there was one in the past month that had on the headline " Meet Metal's Newest Surprise Band"(badly paraphrased) and I went WTF? they sound like a 60's Folk Rock band, or at least the couple songs I heard.

Mysterious Swedish buzz band GHOST will embark on its first-ever North American tour this fall following the group's crowd-pleasing U.S. promotional performances last week in Baltimore (at the Maryland Deathfest) and New York City. GHOST cult leader "The Ghoul With No Name" (a.k.a. REPUGNANT/SUBVISION's Tobias Forge, who takes the stage in the form of "a satanic pope") and his anonymous ghouls will team up with ENSLAVED and ALCEST for a three-week trek that will launch on September 23 in Springfield, Virginia. GHOST will be touring in support of its debut album, "Opus Eponymous", which has been called "amazing" by Stereogum and "a primer on the creation of melodic hard rock" by The Big Takeover.

GHOST floored music fans with its first U.S. shows and served notice that it is not only a "band to watch" but will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come. In its live review of GHOST's New York City headlining show, the Village Voice called the group's performance "lurching and menacing", saying "GHOST's sound is like heavy metal trapped in a state of suspended animation since 1973." A sneak peek at GHOST performing live can be viewed now as the band was captured on film by a recent attendee of the band's black mass. Check out the band performing the song "Satan Prayer" as part of its May 29 headlining set at the 2011 Maryland Deathfest below.

GHOST's "Opus Eponymous" is a daringly fascinating combination of satanic rock music merged with an almost unthinkable pop sensibility. Enveloped in a shroud of mystery and standing anonymous beneath the painted faces, hoods and robes which their sect demand, the GHOST deliver litanies of pulsating heavy rock and stimulating lyrics which "glorify and glamorize the disgusting and sacrilegious." The music and philosophies of GHOST specifically target "individuals who have a void in their life perhaps caused by some form of emotional trauma or upset" (research suggests these are most likely adolescents); this dearth can then be alluringly filled by GHOST's music and philosophies.

GHOST North American tour dates with ENSLAVED and ALCEST:

Sep. 23 - Springfield, VA - Jaxx
Sep. 24 - Millvale, PA - Mr. Small’s Theatre
Sep. 25 - New York, NY - Gramercy Theatre
Sep. 26 - Cambridge, MA - The Middle East
Sep. 28 - Quebec City, QC - Impérial
Sep. 29 - Montreal, QC - Cafe Campus
Sep. 30 - Toronto, ON - Opera House
Oct. 01 - Columbus, OH - Outland Live
Oct. 02 - Chicago, IL - Bottom Lounge
Oct. 03 - St. Paul, MN - Station 4

Yeah, the more I'm looking at it the more utterly confused I am. When you type in "Enslaved Alcest Ghost tour" on google, almost all the news sites say, "GHOST to tour US with Enslaved/Alcest".

They must all be fucking wrong. Ivan was talking earlier this year how they had a fall headline tour planned for Enslaved. And despite me diggin' Ghost and their style, Enslaved are one of my favorite bands of all time. Hopefully we can get some old tunes live? :snivel:

Ghost isn't headlining.

There are two reasons why every site is saying "Ghost to tour with Enslaved/Alcest"

1. It's Ghost's first US tour
2. The record label wanted to get Ghost's name out there.

Enslaved is headlining. No way does Ghost headline over Enslaved, despite the buzz around them right now.

I'm not sure I agree with it either... I'm just really biased towards Alcest right now because I really want to see them play most all of Écailles De Lune. Like someone above pointed out, Opus Eponymous can be covered in its entirety during a fairly brief set. Alcest deserves more time than they do. And I actually wouldn't be opposed to them headlining this one, even though that's reaaaaaly unrealistic.

The Pittsburgh show has doors at 6:30 and the show beginning at 7. With Smalls shows typically ending around 10:30-11:00, it could easily be

First band (should be Ghost): 7;00-7:40 (Opus Eponymous+ The Beatles cover)
Alcest: 8:00-9:00
Enslaved: 9:20-11:00ish

I. Opus Eponymous is 35 minutes long, if you include the Beatles cover they have a little over 40 min of material.
II. Ghost is "metal", but predominantly harder old sounding rocky stuff.
III. Ghost's demo and EP were beloved by "the underground" for a few months prior to Opus Eponymous's release, then through buzz they were picked up by Metal Blade and then disowned by everyone, which is bullshit, and their success is not due to "good marketing" it's due to easily stomachable poppy rock music with a "scary" aesthetic that makes it ok to like if you are into extreme metal and cool to like if you enjoy the rock fair which Ghost's music is generally found in..
IV. Ghost are way, way, waaay the fuck better than Alcest. I will probably go now.
V. JFaC and the whole deathcore movement produced thousands of shitty clones and didn't have an ounce of interesting music between them. There is no "occult rock" movement or scene. There are like 5 bands, and despite semi popularity they sadly will never achieve the popularity of core music. I wish they were as big of a huge rip-off movement as people claimed. I'd love to see/play with a million Ghost clones, much more than neo thrash or deathcore or anything else.

If you don't like Ghost because you aren't into catchy poppy spooky rock songs, so be it. If you hate Ghost for any other reason than that, fuck you.

Cults(inb4 someone makes a reference to the band) just really bother me and i'd feel uncomfortable watching them live. From what little I know about Ghost, it seems to me that they are the Brujeria of Stoner-y Rock Metal, if you will. They dress the way they do as a gimmick, and for fun. They try to keep their identities secret because they have jobs in other bands which aren't very much like Ghost - plus, it adds an extra layer of "mystery" - but I doubt if any of them would get truly upset if their cover was blown. It's basically a "fun" thing, even though the music is a bit melancholy at times, but it's basically all an act.

At least that's the impression I get.

IF Alcest gets a longer set, and that's an if, then that will be amazing. But would I want to trade a couple Alcest songs for an entire set by Ghost? Probably. So there.

But you're saying that as if it's Alcest's fault. Maybe Ghost couldn't get passports ready in time. Maybe something happened to one of them or their family.

It was visa complications. And I'm going to this mainly for Alcest because I haven't seen them before. I love Enslaved and Ghost but I've seen them before so I'm not as excited for them as I am Alcest.

True, true. I didn't mean that it's anyone's fault. Just a shitty coincidence. We'll still have 2 even more amazing sets from better bands, so I'll be more than happy. But when I listen to "Elizabeth" a couple days later, I will be feeling a little ping of remorse.

Krallice would be a good choice. But they are having local openers for every show. so just let there be one opening band and Alcest then Enslaved. Sounds perfect to me.

Agreed. The only reason why I could see them scramble to find a third band is if Alcest and Enslaved didn't want to play longer. I believe this is the longest tour Alcest has ever done, and after the week-long east coast tour last year Neige lost his voice. I could see him wanting to protect it for the entire tour.

I hope in that case that Neige has been training his voice. Sure the St. Paul show is one of the first, but I don't want to see him cancel the tour mid tour.

Getting to meet Neige will be a tremendous highlight for me.

because they're a gimmick that fails at being a gimmick?

Not that, and it's not bitterness. I'm just getting tired of people getting over-excited about a band who royally suck live. They were always the least important band on this bill, so it gets increasingly annoying that people considered them the only reason to go when they're so bad on stage.

As such, I'd like them to get their visas sorted and actually do an NA tour so the whole thing can be put to rest and I can stop hearing about them in every thread on the board, and they can stop being constantly booked in Europe too.

Or they learn to play live and everyone wins. Sadly, I think they'll drift into obscurity before that happens. It truly is a shame they're so boring live, because the album is decent. Not the best of its ilk by any stretch of the imagination, but a good disc all the same.

Different booking agency thank god for this tour, so I highly doubt we'd get either of those bands :D Still thinking one of the New York black metal bands such as Krallice or Liturgy will probably end up on there. Unless The Devil's Blood already have visa's, they won't be anywhere close to the US during this tour.

Junius was on a tour with some bigger bands last year (Triptykon / 1349 / Yakuza, I think?), and they surprised a lot of people. I checked out some of their stuff because of that tour and the comments people were making, and I liked what I heard quite a bit. :fist:

From my review of when they opened for Valient Thorr:

"I'd actually never heard of Junius before, but apparently there were a few people in the audience who had waited a long time to see them live. I was blown away. The best way I can describe their sound (and I'm probably doing a horrible job) is: Alcest if they had doom/sludge instead of black metal. Or maybe Explosions In The Sky if they were pissed off (and with vocals!). Tons of great moments in their set that made me audibly say "Wow" more than once. Great stuff."
