Someone who works at Metalsucks, or one of the posters like on Blabbermouth?

I keep hearing it's Katatonia. I hope it is. I don't want to see Meshuggah play a main support set, unless it is the greatest support set ever.

I can't seem to get into Opeth for some reason, and I love Bloodbath(completely different bands though). I also don't like any prog bands, they're just overall very boring to me.

You're right, it's not unusual, but that wasn't my point. A band that plays for that amount of time shouldn't have 3 bands supporting them.

I'm gonna try my hand at booking some shows, though. Never done it before but seems like a good time to try.

In fact, I may be feeling kind of ambitious but I want to start a Vermont Metal Fest or something. I'm thinking I'll have Revocation and Trap Them headline (they're both from New England) and the rest could be local bands from Vermont or surrounding states. Dunno if I'll have any luck.

It's a shame I got into Opeth a year too late. I was going to go to that show at the Wiltern but since the front pit sold out I decided not too. Had I been as into them as I am now I would've bought tickets as soon as possible.

I was last there a year ago. It's okay - the sound is pretty hit-or-miss. There's a nice, big floor area, and then there are places in the back where you can sit or grab a drink.

The cons: it can get wicked hot in there (I believe it hit 120 F indoors for the Fates Warning show last year), and it's really not in a good section of town. :/

Ghost Reveries was what put this band on my radar a few years ago, and then Blackwater Park sealed the deal recently. Watershed I think is also an easier album to digest compared to their other works.

Something like this.

1. Ghost Reveries
2. Deliverance
3. Watershed

If you like those...

4. Blackwater Park
5. My Arms, Your Hearse
6. Still Life

And if you "get it" by that point,

7. Morningrise
8. Damnation
9. Orchid

Blackwater, Ghost Reveries, and Morningrise are my favorites, btw. Opeth don't have a single bad record; one of the few bands like that.

I started with Still Life and fucking loved it, then got Damnation and it was good. Not sure where I went from there. Still Life was one of my favorite albums for the longest time (now I have to be in the right mood to listen to it all), but just listen to "The Moor" and it will seal the deal whether you like them or not.

Those two but the other way around for me. Fairly sure Deliverance and Blackwater Park were next, but can't quite remember. The order I bought Opeth albums in was dictated by price.

Surprised to see so many recommending starting with Ghost Reveries. I'd recommend Still Life as a starting point every time.

There's Toad's Place (http://www.toadsplace.com/) in New Haven and Daniel Street (http://www.danielstreetclub.com/index2.php?page=home) in Milford (though that's 21+). I usually find out about shows by the MassConcerts e-mail newsletter - they book shows at both the Webster and various venues in Massachusetts and surrounding New England. Their website is here. (www.massconcerts.com) Not many shows hit CT, so I usually go up to the Palladium in Worcester, MA instead - its sound is hit-or-miss, but it's a better venue.

Really? I feel like Ghost Reveries has the most accessible riffs for the unexperienced Opeth listener. "Baying of the Hounds", "Ghost of Perdition", "The Grand Conjuration", and "Harlequin Forest" were my first Opeth tunes, and are all pretty riff-oriented metal, whereas Blackwater Park is much deeper and progressive. Watershed has some riff-oriented songs, too (Heir Apparent, Hex Omega).

What sucks most about this is that they're playing my favorite venue in Atlanta. :bouville:

If I could afford the gas, I'd be going to both.

I guess the only advantage is that I did get to see Opeth twice already. But I've yet to see Katatonia.

But I've yet to see Enslaved, Alcest, or Ghost.

I like the sentiment, but there is ones here who can't see either. They are more deserving.

To make things worse, both go on sale this Friday. Enlsaved is $15adv/$17 at the door. Not sure about Opeth yet.

All the Opeth dates so far on ticketmaster look to be around $22-$27, about $30-$35 after fees.

So nearly double the price. If gas stayed the same price now (hahahahaha), that's 50 bucks for a trip there and back.

Damn this will be tough. I wish I could go to both.

how likely is it for both NYC dates to sell out?

I know that Opeth had no trouble selling out last time they came to Vancouver, and that was to an age-restricted venue (huge portion of metal fans here are under 19) that holds roughly 1,000 people. The population here is like 25% of NYC at best. Wikipedia tells me that the NYC venue holds ~2,500 people. So, probably likely.

They sell out every time they come. I'm not sure if they could 2 nights in a row though.

EDIT: ^ They never sell out instantly though. Even the 20th Anniversary NYC show last year took some time to sell out and that had people all over coming for that.

I guess it makes a little sense though. They're playing the Heavy TO (as well as Heavy MTL, which explains no Montreal date) in July. They probably had to sign a radius/distance clause or whatever they're called to not plan any shows that are close to those markets.

VIP Packages for this are $225, which is sad because I really wanted to get one :(

2. The VIP Meet and Greet Package, which is $225.00 and includes:

- 1 General Admission ticket
- Meet and Greet with Opeth before show
- Early Entry into venue.
- 1 High Quality Embroidered Opeth Tour shoulder bag including:
- 1 Special Opeth VIP Tour T-shirt
- Limited-edition Opeth tour poster signed by the band at the meet and greet
- Limited-edition Opeth guitar pick tin with Opeth guitar picks
- Commemorative Opeth show-specific VIP tour laminate

EDIT: I'm reeallyy thinking about doing this... but i probably won't.

They are really milking it now, I could understand it for the 20th Anniversary shows but for a regular album tour that just seems ridiculous. Especially when they usually would stick around after the show to hang with the fans.

I just bought the regular general admission for Denver. I'll probably be regretting not getting the $30 upgrade for the CD and early admission when i'm standing in line the night of the show. Wow. Definitely don't pass up on that opportunity. The show here is $50, so I think I'm going to skip it. I'm a bigger fan of Enslaved, and they're playing here the same week as Opeth and for much cheaper. Too bad tours all seem to come around at the same time.

Fuckfuckfuckfuck.

There are still VIP tickets available for my date. I already got the $60 pack. But I'm strongly considering selling that early admission ticket on craigslist or something, and pony up the money for VIP.

$225. I was gonna pay $30 or $35 for a tour shirt anyway, so thats included. And a signed tour poster. And I get to fucking meet Mikael.

The thing is, I'm making a good amount of money this summer. I can totally afford it. Hell, I'm even probably gonna get an Opeth-themed tattoo within the next year or so. How much longer will Opeth be together? If thy did do VIP packages in the future, would it cost more? Probably. And will I be in the same financial situation years from now and able to afford it? Who knows. This is my one perfect chance to experience my favorite band in the best setting possible. I just wish I hadn't pussied out earlier and and bought the medium-sized ticket.

So what do you guys think? Am I crazy? Or does my argument in my head make sense?
