One of the best albums of 2011.

The fact that they aren't going to be making a Traditional Opeth album, makes it that much better.

I think that at this point, my favorite albums of the year will be Explosions in the Sky, Black Dahlia Murder, Opeth, and Protest the Hero.

This still cracks me up
The CD was recorded earlier this year at Atlantis studios (formerly Metronome studios) in Stockholm. Jens Bogren (SOILWORK, KATATONIA, PARADISE LOST, BLOODBATH) engineered the effort while mixing duties were handled by Steven Wilson (PORCUPINE TREE). The new material has been described by the band as "good."

Explain

They are going more in a Fusion style. I remember reading an interview a few months back where Mikael said he showed off some of his early riffs to friends and the rest of the guys in the band, they were in the style of Opeth's past and they all said that they would all be disappointed if that's what he released.

The album now will be mixed of Fusion, Deep Purple, Dio, Sabbath, and Camel.

10 songs means the average song length is like 7:54 (assuming they use the full amount available on the CD, which is 79 minutes I believe). Obviously there will be a 10 minute song or two, so that may mean we're just getting a couple 3 or 4 minute songs a la Ghost Reveries.

Quite a few of Opeth's albums have one or two songs that are under 2 minutes in length - interludes and such - but they still count as tracks. I wouldn't speculate too much on potential song lengths at this point. I'm anticipating a surprise anyway!

-The album was played to journalists in 5.1 surround sound

-NO death metal or growling

-Some bands or styles the album reminded the journalist of: Sabbath, Beatles, jazz, King Crimson, Cream, Rainbow, Floyd, funk, Purple, Piirpauke, classical music, My Dying Bride, folk, Love, Jethro Tull, Maiden…

-Mikael said that he's been bored of death metal since 90's and its time is over for Opeth, and he's wanted to do this kind of album since when he was 20.

4/5 of you will hate this information. I, for one makes me want to hear it even more. He's got Bloodbath for Death Metal.

I was kind of expecting this. I'm definitely happy, but at the same time I feel a little sad. I've recently found that the more experimental Opeth material speaks to me more these days, so I'm really feeling that this can be a good thing. I have faith in Mikael though.

I'm just kind of suprised, I guess. Watershed was lacking in the death metal department, but stuff like Heir Apparent and Hessian Peel made up for it. As long as it's not an album full of Porcelain Hearts and Burdens (it's unlikely, and I'm not saying I don't like those songs), I'll be ok with it.

I know it sounds wrong, but just because you lost interest in a particular style doesn't mean you can't play it, enjoy it from time to time. I don't he lost interest in it enough to never play it again, look at the Devin Townsend story, He's hated the music of Strapping Young Lad because it was hurting him, and coming out this month comes Deconstruction, an album just as brutally crazy.

Well, it's not a surprise. I'm not really disappointed, but now this leaves the question: will this change in direction work well? I'm all for it if it sounds good.

However, saying he has Bloodbath for death metal doesn't really mean anything. They've done 3 or 4 shows in their career, right? And if you've watched clips from their latest DVD, you know Mikael sounds like a dying horse on it. And it really pains me to say that.

I'm actually very intrigued by this new sound they are gonna be pursuing on the next record. That is the point of being a progressive band after all: progressing, even if it's in a direction people don't expect. Not gonna lie though, i'm gonna miss the shifts in dynamics between the death growls and clean vocals.

I'm a bit skeptical to be honest. I like Damnation (in fact it was the first full Opeth album I listened to), and I like all the "softer" tracks they did (Harvest, etc.), but i'm not sure about the "no growling" stuff.

Although if it's anything like the heavier songs they've done in the past with clean vocals (majority of "Ghost of Perdition", first few verses of "Harlequin Forest"), then that'd be something I'd love.

Listen to Damnation, and say that again. I dare you.

I've listened to Opeth's entire discography many times. I like Damnation, but it's probably my least favorite Opeth album. I fucking love Burden, though.

Yeah, my favorite song off Watershed is Hex Omega, and there are no growls on it. Still incredibly heavy and atmospheric, though.

Well reading over the press releases again it says "No Death metal or harsh vocals", which leads me to believe that not only will there be no growling, but there's a chance there may not be that many heavy/death metal like riffs or drumming on this album.

I guess we shall wait and sees.

More from Mikael:

"We recorded 12 songs, where ten are on the album. Two songs are being saved for the special edition. So there's ten songs and Per (Wiberg; former keyboardist) is still on the album even though he isn't in the band anymore. He's playing keyboards on the entire album. I'm plating keyboards too. We also have new keyboardist Joakim Svalberg (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, GLENN HUGHES) who is going to tour with us. He's not a member yet. We just did the first show with him (at the Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee) a few days ago. He's also on the album playing the opening number ('Heritage'). The songs are all over the place. I'd like to think that all of the songs have their own identity so to speak. One song is a little tribute to RONNIE JAMES DIO (called 'Slither') and it's a kind of gimmicky sounding song, tongue-in-cheek. The working title of that song was called 'Kill The Queen'. It's done as a tribute to him because we love him so much. The other songs move from folk music to prog-rock to jazz, crossed with PINK FLOYD and fusion like HERBIE HANCOCK or WEATHER REPORT. We actually have the (former) drummer/percussion player from Weather Report on the album - Alex Acuņa (ELVIS PRESLEY, PETER GABRIEL, CARLOS SANTANA). We also have a Swedish fusion flutist who is playing a flute solo to a doomy riff. It's all over the place and a fun listen. It's really challenging and I don't think it's boring. It's very complex with a beautiful mix and a beautiful master. It was mixed by Steven Wilson (PORCUPINE TREE) and myself and mastered by a guy by the name of Peter MEW at Abbey Road Studios in London who has engineered many, many obscure records that I've collected over the years. It was recorded at an old, vintage studio in Stockholm called Atlantis studios, which used to be a record label called Metronome. It's where ABBA did all their albums pretty much. So back to these songs, I don't know how to explain what they sound like. They are all over the place. And one song is not representative of the whole album."

The jazzier, the better! I'm also really glad to see Steven Wilson back on this one. Great producer.

The more I hear, the more excited I get. This is gonna be softer than their heavy stuff, yet more rock-y and jazz-y than Damnation. Could quite possibly be my album of the year if Mikael can pull it off well (which I don't doubt).

The thing is, he didn't produce it. He only had a hand in mixing it.

The more I read comments from Mikael about this album, the more I'm wary of it. The idea started out well, but I'm really not liking what I'm reading now. I'm not expecting very much from this at all anymore.

I don't think it will be their best album, but I'm sure it will still be a great record. We will just have to wait until we get a song sample of some sort before we pass judgement.

It can't be any worse than Morbid Angel's trainwreck of a new album.

I wouldn't say muh worse, but they are quite bad.

Really looking forward to this, Opeth are a band who have yet to do wrong in my eyes, a new album is always an intense and rewarding first listen for me from them.

I would. There are actual tracks I like on the new Morbid Angel. Sure the shit outshines it, but there is some damn good songs on it.

the 4 I listed...not so much. I think The City on Unseen by The Haunted is the only song I like between all 4 albums.

It won't: vocals too hard in the mix, weird drumsound and childish songs. It's worse than St. Anger; we had to wait 8 years for THIS?

Oh for fucks sake...

DOES EVERY SINGLE GOD DAMN METAL ALBUM COMING OUT HAVE TO BE TRACED BACK TO MORBID ANGEL'S NEW ALBUM?

It'll be the second coming of Jesus Christ before one discussion on a metal forum about a new album coming out doesn't mention their new album. No fucking shit Opeth's new album is gonna be better than Morbid Angel's new album! How often does something as bad as Illud Divinum Insanus come out anyway? The last time I recall something as bad that album coming out was The Unspoken King, and that was 3 years ago!

It's the same shit with a new album coming out and Morbid Angel's new album. Here's 3 things that are usually brought up about it:

a. [new album] is going to be better than Morbid Angel's new album!
b. Well [new album] can't be as bad as Morbid Angel's new album!

And my personal favorite,
c. Oh no I hope that [band with new album] doesn't sound like the new Morbid Angel with this one!

We fucking get it, Morbid Angel's new album blows a bag of dicks! Is there a need to be reminded of it in EVERY SINGLE DISCUSSION OUT THERE?

That being said, I'm very excited for Opeth's new album. With the shorter song lengths I have a feeling it's gonna be more Watershed or even Damnation based but we will see. Can't wait to see them in Chicago!

I know a LOT of people love them, but I just don't get it. My best friend is a huge Opeth fan and he's dragged me to at least 3 of their shows. I've given them a fair chance. Akerfeldt's brand of fluffy prog-death just ain't for me. THAT'S it. I'll stop messing this thread up for the fans of this band.
