So, it's Joseph Gordon Levitt as a rocker type dude based mostly on Cliff Burton from Metallica who just appears out of nowhere in some kid's life. And Natalie Portman's in it. And I just watched a full 2-minute trailer and still have no idea what the fuck the movie is about.

Anyone else seen anything from it?

I think I'll just wait for DethMaiden to cinema-stalk Portman and tell me what's it like.

I read a review on FilmDrunk (they saw it at a festival), and they said it was great. I'd love to see it.

But what's it about?
After the tragic loss of his mother, T.J. (Devin Brochu) and his pill popping father (Rainn Wilson) are forced to live with T.J.'s elderly grandmother (Piper Laurie). A young man with a troubled past named Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) assumes the role of both mentor and tormentor, leading T.J into troubles he could never have imagined. A young grocery clerk named Nicole (Natalie Portman) steps in to protect T.J., and becomes the object of T.J.'s fantasies, while Hesher moves into Grandma's home. Although uninvited, he is somehow accepted.[1]

Sounds like your average indie drama, but the great cast has me interested in it.

The trailer has "Battery" for the first half of it.

Yeah... I'm growing less interested. They seem to have favoured making no sense in order to create some kind of heart-tugging meaning.

There's a whole story to that. Basically JGL based his character on Burton, they showed Metallica the film without telling them that's what he'd done, they went "oh, he reminds us of Cliff", and because of that they let them use their songs.

Fun fact, but it still doesn't sound like much of a film. I'm hoping the stuff that just doesn't make sense actually turns out to be sensible in the movie. If it does, they're doing a piss-poor job of selling it up front.

It would be if I hadn't gleaned that much from the trailer. It still doesn't make sense. As evidenced by the last line in that description. That's exactly how the trailer portrays it too. JGL's character comes out of nowhere, hangs around unchallenged for no apparent reason, trashes shit, and the kid stands up to a school bully and all is fine.

Like I said above, piss-poor job of up-front advertising.

See most American indie flicks marketed to the mainstream in the past decade for further example of such.

Anyone else seen this? I watched it the same day as the Charlie Sheen Roast and my stomach still hurts from laughing. Kind of a strange flick but great soundtrack and some incredible laughs. The funeral home scene is the Best of 2011 by a mile to me. Joseph Gordon-Levitt would never win an Oscar for his role but he should be nominated. I liked it.

Loved Hesher, one of the best Black Comedies I've seen in quite some time. Don't call it an Indie Drama if you haven't even watched it.

This was definitely on the old Christmas list this year. I laughed my ass off at it as well. One of the oddest comedies I've seen in quite awhile but a damn fine movie.
