Noisecreep: Can you describe the general vibe of the material so far?

Dailor: It doesn't seem as proggy. There's moments, but it seems more riff-oriented. It seems a little more stripped down. [2004's] "Leviathan" was a little more stripped down, and it feels like that to me. Everything always changes once you go in the studio, but at the moment it seems like a really super-heavy LED ZEPPELIN or something. It has a lot of that [John] Bonham-esque groove to it, but really heavy and dark. I really like playing like that, and when it goes into those parts, I'm psyched

What caught my eye from the interview, CANT WAIT.

Also, for the love of god don't make anything like Remission again.

Nat, you are my hero.

And although I love both sides of the Mastodon spectrum, and Blood Mountain is one of my favorite albums of all time, I really miss the heaviness of Remission and the thrashiness of Leviathan. I think the band as a whole needed to cool down and let out all their progginess in CTS; now that they've done that, they can just go back to creating the classic Mastodon sound. Fuck yes.

More bands need to keep up Mastodon's work ethic. With the exception of Crack the Skye, they'll have released an album once every two years since Remission and gone on many tours to support every album. Hell Crack the Skye had two headlining legs, a co-headlining leg, and a support leg in addition to the summer festival circuit. Half of these bands that Pitchfork declares to be the next huge thing disappear simply because they're too lazy to write material frequently enough to keep their fans' interest up, so props to Mastodon for remaining relevant.

Update: Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON have set "The Hunter" as the title of their new album, which the band recently finished recording at Doppler Studios in Atlanta with producer Mike Elizondo. Drum tracks were previously completed in Los Angeles at the legendary Sound City Studios where NIRVANA's masterwork "Nevermind" was recorded. Songtitles set to appear on the album include "Blasteroids" and "All The Heavy Lifting".

Sounds like it could be another concept album, where the songs are thematically linked. I remember reading somewhere that the new one is supposed to be more Leviathan-esque, so maybe this one will be a bombastic story about some evil beast that stalks some primordial forest in search of prey, or something like that.

Here's looking forward to a nice and heavy, bludgeoning album of songs. Mastodon have had their fun with the proggier side of their sound - now I want some more brutal skull-pounding and ultra-heavy riffage. :rocker:

IrritatedTrout

"Bill also confirmed that there are almost fifteen tracks on the album, no long proggy songs anymore and it's faster and crazier than their latest record "Crack The Skye" (Brent compared it to Leviathan in it's level of simplicity)."

That is literally the best thing he could have said. Contender for album of the year?

And that completely sucks about the hunting accident. I wonder about the fine details of his death. I've grown up around hunters my entire life, and hunted a fair bit myself, although not so much anymore. I have incredible respect for people who hunt, and to hear about accidents like that is completely devastating. I hope that the album doesn't become an anti-hunting statement; that would be a huge turn-off for me... hopefully Nat's prediction is right for the concept ;)

When asked about the sound of MASTODON's forthcoming album, "The Hunter", Dailor said:

When you listen to the songs, they don't sound as 'fun' as we perceive them to be, I guess; it's still pretty extremely heavy material." He added, "We had a few songs that were kind of, not left over from 'Crack The Skye', but just stuff that we wanted to be on that album, but that album kind of took on a whole different thing of its own and there were a few stragglers that were super-heavy and crazy that didn't make it, and we finally got to put them on this record. And then we wrote a whole bunch of brand new stuff. There's, like, 14 songs that we recorded. And it's sort all over the place a lot of different sounds. Some straight-up classic-rock-sounding songs, straight-up death metal-sounding songs and some completely bizarre, weirdo rock songs that we're not really sure what they are, but we love them.

OH MY GOD I AM SO EXCITED :drool::drool:

Back on topic: some new song titles revealed here. (http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=159402)That was an interesting read, and the video provided even more info. Thanks to The Tony for posting.

So let's recap where we're at:

- Four song titles revealed:

"The Sparrow"
"The Ruiner" (supposed to be VERY heavy :bricks:)
"Blasteroids" (sounds like a 1980's video game :D)
"All the Heavy Lifting" (sounds like this one might be heavy as well :dorky:).

- The album is NOT a concept album after all (based on Brann's comments, the concept - if there is one, is rather loosely defined or not really defined at all, so for all intents & purposes there isn't one).

- It's sounding like it's going to be a really heavy record in general. It also sounds like there's going to be some variety in the overall sound from one track to the other. In fact, some of Brann's comments make it sound like the album might not sound all that cohesive (stuff like "it's sort all over the place a lot of different sounds"), but I'll reserve judgment until I hear it.

- It also sounds like they might have done some experimenting on this one (referring to Brann's comments such as describing the material as "crazy" or "completely bizarre, weirdo rock songs that we're not really sure what they are, but we love them". This could be good or bad. Again, I'll wait until I actually hear it before I form any opinions.

I'm definitely liking what I'm hearing about the high level of heavosity and references to Leviathan. That bodes well. :D

Yeah the only thing that worries me is that it might not be as much of an album compared to the last few:agree: I'm with ya there. Still, the rest of the buzz sounds pretty promising - and most of it's coming from the band themselves, so you know it's not just rumors.

Exactly. Musically, I know it will massage my ear-pussy ever so gently. But on the surface... I mean we all know Mastodon is weird. What the fuck is a Cysquatch? Who knows! But even for their weird meter, this is just off-the-charts silly-wise.

Remission lyrics/imagery = fucking badass, large creatures, Behemoths, fire, etc.

Leviathan lyrics/imagery = fucking SEABEAST, MEGALODON, "AAARGGHGH GET ME THAT WHITE WHALE, MATE!" :rocker:

Blood Mountain lyrics/imagery = carving out my eyes with my fingertips whilst hunting ogres and fuckin' dwarves being chase by giant Cysquaches!

Crack the Skye = early 20th century imperial Russia... with space travel?

The Hunter = Videogames, the beatles, and the sexual tendencies of celestial bodies? That's like, Devil-wears-prada level weird in songtitles.

I'm not going to judge this based on a 1 minute clip of what could easily be the melodic part of an otherwise really heavy song, but if all of the album is like this I will be disappointed. It's Mastodon. Don't question it, just love it!

I am still laughing about The Octupus Has No Friends and Bedazzled Fingernails, but there is no denying this record is (most likely) going to be awesome.

Mastodon always kinda had a funny side. They did a song for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Movie, toured with Dethklok, and made that Deathbound video. I would have no problem with some humor and silliness on the new album.

Track by track review of the album. Also Mastodon's site will debut a new song Tuesday.

Looks like Scott Kelly is singing on Spectrelight (lol @ the website for calling him Bill Kelly). Even though that "review" is way too positive about every track to be really accurate, it sounds like there will definitely be material that's a bit heavier than what we've heard so far. :D

On a side note, I've completely fallen in love with Curl of the Burl. I'll be damned if it isn't one of my favorite shorter Mastodon songs. Still not too crazy about Black Tongue though.

Well, that was cool. For Mastodon circa 2011, I think that's as heavy as we'll hear from them. Scott Kelly's cameo is awesome as expected.

That song fucking kicks ass. Best of the three released so far.

good shit, very heavy which I like, but I'm just concerned that the album won't have any cohesive flow. All three of the songs that have been debuted so far are wayyy different from each other.
