Ha ha, I see that there has been some editing in this thread. So, just a quick (dumb?) question: would Mastodon headline over "the other band mentioned that has since been edited out of this thread?" I am not sure how popular that "other band" is.

jd091
09-14-2011, 08:42 PM
Blasteroids = not bad. Some potential.

Stargasm = pretty great, actually! Like a faster Sleeping Giant.

Octopus has no friends = very, very catchy. Me gusta. I like the sung line.

All the Heavy Lifting = eh. Meh. Eh.

The Hunter = I like the soft guitar, but really am not digging Brent's voice here...

Dry Bone Valley = forgettable...

Thickening = Again, I like the guitar... but can't stand the vocals.

Creature Lives = WHAT. ARE. THESE. VOCALS. WHAT. WHAAAT. WHAT. WHATWHATWHAT.

Spectrelight = pretty good! Nice riff!

Bedazzeled Fingernails = Uh... no thanks.

The Sparrow = really like it for a soft one, actually. Nothing jaw-dropping, though.

OVERALL: It's early to tell, since these are only 30 seconds each... but I'm pretty iffy on it. Yeah, there are some solid riffs and a couple songs with potential, but I'm probably gonna like this a lot less than Crack the Skye. Which is saying a lot. Kind of sad knowing that one of my favorite bands of all time will never truly sound like they did in their prime.

I gotta disagree with that one there, just since Blood Mountain is my favorite Mastodon record and the Black Album is my least favorite "good" Metallica record. ;)

I kind of see the connection you guys are trying to make, but it's vague at best. Yeah, Mastodon is going in a Good-different-potentially worse pattern with their records, but you can't compare it directly. I think. If anything, I thought CTS was gonna be their turning point "Black Album", but they kind of regressed after that, so I dunno...

TRIPLE POST

People are also reading me wrong as if the analogous points mean the quality is similar. ...AJFA is my favorite Metallica album where CTS is probably my least favorite Mastodon. Calling The Hunter the Black Album isn't bad, it's just an assessment of Mastodon's head space going into the record. Shorter songs than the previous album with an eye for catchiness and accessibility. I like The Hunter more each listen whereas I'm pretty ambivalent about the Black Album.

I agree that a few of the songs just kinda blend together. They're not really breaking any ground here but so far I like it, don't love it. I'm not mad like a lot of people because I wasn't expecting Leviathan/Remission type stuff but most of these short/somewhat aimless songs give me the feeling that CTS was the last album that they really had a need to make.

So far my favorites are Curl, Dry Bone Valley, Spectrelight and Bedazzled Fingernails.

Curl of the Burl?

I don't think Curl Of The Burl is really radio friendly. It reminds me a lot of Queens Of The Stone Age, who really aren't a radio friendly band. More accessible than their other material? Absolutely. Radio Friendly? Not really.

Thickening is my favorite song by far. Black Tongue is also very good. Octupus, Heavy Lifting, and the title track are pretty sweet. Blasteroids and Dry Bone Valley are all right. Curl of the Burl has a cool chorus, but other than that... meh.

Stargasm is one of the worst things I've ever fucking heard. It's a shame that Spectrelight is the only song which comes close to Remission (or, hell, even Leviathan) in terms of heaviness, because the vocals are just fucking ATROCIOUS. Bedazzled Fingernails, The Sparrow, and Creature Lives are also pretty bad.

So:

5 standouts: Thickening, Black Tongue, Octupus has no friends, All the Heavy Lifting, The Hunter

4 whatevers: Blasteroids, Curl of the Burl, Dry Bone Valley, Spectrelight

4 bad: Bedazzled Fingernails, The Sparrow, Creature Lives, Stargasm

Okay, so there's five stand-out tracks and only four bad ones, but the fact that there's so many shrug-worthy tracks worries me... :eyes:

I'll have to give it another listen!

No actually. Back on topic, my faves from The Hunter are Blasteroid, Spectrelight, All The Heavy Lifting, and Dry Bone Valley. A lot of songs are very close in quality. Creature Lives is the only song that I don't like on the album.

edit: I actually loved Stargasm, I am surprised you hated it so much Ben.

Because of the typos? No, I just woke up when I wrote that.

Because of what I said? No, Brann said it himself that's what the song is about. And video has that in it, and all the after affects of Meth in a funny ass way.

If it's under $15 it shouldn't be a deal breaker. What about Best Buy? They are usually cheaper for the first week.

If I pay more than $11-12, I feel ripped off. Whatever; I'll probably just stop in Reggie's after class next week and see if they have it.

Was over at my friend's apartment who has his own internet, so I downloaded the leak. :D Gonna give it a proper listen now.

I did listen to all of Leviathan, Remission, and Blood Mountain earlier today. Shit. I doubt Mastodon will ever top those albums again.

Uhm:

Remission=Kill 'em All: rawest and heaviest
Leviathan=RTL: Most complete and most aggressive
Blood Mountain=Master of Puppets: uh oh, gettin' proggy!
CTS=AJFA: PROG AS FUCK
Hunter=Black Album: hey can I get a hit single in this bitch?

edit: drunk

I'm way late on this, but Ride The Lightning is the heaviest Metallica album. Kill em All is the rawest, but not the heaviest.

Story behind Curl of the Burl,

The burl is the knot thatís found in various trees ó itís almost like a cancer of trees. Within that burl are unique swirls or curls. A lot of people will cut those down and sell them to wood-makers, wood sculptors, and furniture makers because itís got a unique design to it. And this is a true story which happens in the Pacific Northwest ó a lot of people go out in the woods with chainsaws, they find these burls, they cut them down, they load their pickup trucks with these burls, take them in to town sell them to various wood-makers, take the money from that, purchase more meth, go back in the woods and continue that circle of insanity. So itís based on a true story. People will steal your cars, steal copperÖand people will go out there in the woods and steal burls.
