At Slim's

So after having a nice dinner at Mel's, my dad and I strolled on over to Slim's, to go see Protest the Hero. When we got there, the venue had already opened it's doors, so the line to get into the venue wasn't too big and it was gradually shrinking. Once we got into Slim's, I went over to the merch booth, bought a Protest the Hero t-shirt, then we went to get find some good spots. We spotted some open rail to the far right of the stage and stood there the whole show. From that point, it was only a matter of waiting for the show to start.

At 8:30, the opening band, Tesseract started. They really blew me away. I was already a fan of theirs going into the show, their debut album, One, is one of my favorite albums released so far this year. The guys played really well. Their sound was definitely the best of the night. They sounded crystal clear. Their set was definitely one of the best opening sets I've ever seen. I went completely ape-shit when they played Deception and The Impossbile. After watching them, I was compelled to buy their album.

After Tesseract, Maylene & the Sons of Disaster came on. They were alright. Their sound was pretty shit though. The guitars sounded really muddy and there were times where one of them would take a solo and I couldn't even make it out. Also, the vocals were barely audible. They had one or two songs that actually caught my interest, but that's it. I pretty muched used their set to give my neck a break.

Now was the moment we'd all been waiting for. It was time for Protest the Hero. Just seconds into their first song, C'est La Vie, the whole crowd rushed towards the barrier, pits started, and people were crowd surfing. It was pretty crazy. The dudes in P-test performed exellently. Practically everything was spot on. It was really neat to see these guys play right in front of me. Watching such incredible musicians is well, incredible. Rody sang really well and was fuckin' hilarious. Everything about their set was awesome. Best performance I've seen all year.

Does it make it worse or better that I'm seeing them open air? :eyes:

I'm not exactly following your question. Are you seeing them at an Open Air festival? Or are you just seeing them open? Either way, you'll be getting Protest the Hero, which is always good.

Shouldn't that mean the same thing?

But yeah, open air festival performance. They have one of the lowest slots though :(

I'm sure they'll at least get half an hour. Don't worry, it'll be amazing.

Damn. Great Tesseract Set. Really weird middle band though...

Interesting PTH set for sure. I'm jamming the shit outta Kezia so glad to see them still playing stuff off there. I expected more Scurrilous tracks but would actually be very happy with this setlist. Add Tapestry and maybe 1 more off Kezia like Divinity Within and I'd be a pig in slop.

Glad to see Tesseract on this bill getting exposure...

Good set. Also, Brutal Descent, PTH wont be on the Mainstage at GMM, Id say they will be marquee 2 or metal dome.

This.

I would've loved it if they had played Tandem and Tapestry instead of Dunsel and The Reign of Unending Terror. It was still awesome though.

There's this one security guard at Slim's that always recognizes me and says hey whenever I'm at a show there.

I'd usually tell you how bummed I am that I couldn't make it, but I'm not.

I've gotten a little burned out on going to shows recently, and I'm starting to cut down and go to the ones that really matter. I would have been happy to go, but if it at all detracted from a show I'm really excited about like EITS or Destruction, I'd be very very angry. This way I get to go to Amon Amarth a little hungry for some live music.

I'm not exactly sure I'm following you. So you don't want to go to too many shows, because it may take away from the awesomeness of show you're really looking forward to, yet you're still going to Amon Amarth?

No, I mean that I've gone to a ton of shows that I'm only sort of interested in, and it's starting to burn me out a little bit.

It will have been about a month since my last show when I see Amon Amarth, and I'll have needed that break. I saw 8 in 2 months, I think.

Oh ok. I get it now.

Damn, that's intense.
