View Full Version : Bands with Odd/Interesting Concepts

I tried looking for a thread with this idea, but gave up after a while. Anyways, I love finding bands that have extremely odd or interesting concepts they mixed together and make you say wtf just happened. Some examples of what I am talking about are:

Sykotik Sinfoney is a weird 80s band that reminds me of ICP playing happy metal haha

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjuUO3clEjU

Carnival in Coal is some avante garde band that goes all over the place

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DWb7BlS40w

Le Scrawl is a ska/jazz/grindcore band. They have a bunch of awesome shit haha

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYJbc2i0Mug

Ten Masked Men is a death metal band that covers pop songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVPd8qXYY70

So where I'm going at is seeing if anyone knows about any other awesome bands that have cool mixture of genres. It would be awesome to find some mariachi grindcore or some disco black metal haha.

I remember hearing about a death metal band of all English teachers and all their songs are about famous authors. At their concerts, they'd throw out books to go along with each song and their students got extra credit if they came to their shows.

There are lots of jazz fusion avant-garde metal bands.

Morglbl, Psychofagist, Karcius, Akphaezya, etc...

It's actually a pretty extensive genre, so I'm not sure I'd call it "odd." Interesting, nonetheless.

I was referring the odd part to the Sykotik Sinfoney and Le Scrawl ideas. I think avante-garde is more interesting that anything because there is so much damn work that goes into creating those songs. Thanks for the new bands for me to check out

They pop up on my ipod from time to time.

Get the sticks out of your asses. Not everything which has been - or could be - mentioned in this thread qualifies as "schtick". Some of it is just really out there and creative. I would think that fans of progressive music could grasp that concept a little better than the lot of you seem to be able to have done today.

Schtick: Caninus, Hatebeak, etc.
Not schtick: SGM, DSO, Estradasphere, Shining, etc.

There is a difference.

Oh, and Brad...hating on the costume concept is a little extreme for somebody who loves Immortal nearly as much as his own Grandma....just sayin'. ;)

Not every band I mentioned is necessarily a band I like, but rather, a band that meets the criteria for the topic.

But, bands like Shining, Exivious, Aghora, Akphaezya, Diablo String Orchestra, etc are fucking awesome.

These threads are drawing attention to bands for their eccentricities, though, as if how good they are naturally follows and is somehow secondary. Yeah, I love me some Immortal and Coheed and Cambria and Rob Zombie and King Diamond and plenty more examples that would somewhat fit either the costume thread or this one, but they're also just awesome at what they do. I dunno, I feel like threads like these cheapen that a little bit. Every band has a shtick. The great ones rise above it.

In the jazzy vein that someone mentioned before:
Leprous - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKFgAhFJG9Y&feature=related
Madder Mortem - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrytYhPiVpg
To-Mera - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_TOnXilfx8

And since DSO, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Akphaezya, and uneXpecT were mentioned, it'd be remiss to not mention Stolen Babies:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVYcbJNra8k

Or Pin-Up Went Down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5nC5n0kWUA&feature=related

Subterranean Masquerade are kind of odd: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpKtV9RQX5w

You've probably at least checked these bands out already, but I'll take "interesting concepts" and run with it to include bands who use ethnic influences/melodies.
Middle-Eastern:
Myrath - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64ee6foEP9w&feature=related
Orphaned Land - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaGPNeNVAzw
Melechesh - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR2NUF6CbUo&feature=related

Rotting Christ (Greek): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81D5HfOnjqw

Dark Moor (Spain): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w36FsaTsOpc&feature=related

You're right, there is. But this thread isn't about musical creativity or genius. There are a bunch of bands mentioned here I love (like Pain of Salvation, Myrath, Orphaned Land, and Leprous, who no one here listens to except, apparently, Akuma), but none of them belong in this thread, which is about tacky gimmicks. Calling them "concepts" doesn't cover that up.

In actual fact, bringing up bands like Shining et al in this thread isn't proving a point, it's just inaccurate. They don't belong in this thread. Caninus, Hatebeak, etc. do.

Alestorm spring to mind as a dumb band with a "concept" that haven't been mentioned so far.

Oh, and basically all "viking" metal... :eyes:

Considering that one of the bands in the original post was an "avant-garde band that's all over the place", I'm not sure if there were solid guidelines to begin with. :eyes:

But if we're going with the obvious "gimmick" bands (like Alestorm, Swashbuckle, etc), I think most of them have been covered, or they're just already popular enough to not mention, like Eluveitie, Apocalyptica, Powerglove, and Van Canto.

There were no parameters to this thread. The OP asked for, and I quote, "bands that have odd or interesting concepts mixed together." Jazz and metal are two concepts mixed together that create an interesting genre, thus, it seems like a genre fit for this thread.

I said something, I believe, about the inaccuracy of regarding jazz fusion as an "odd" genre, just because it's so extensive. But that doesn't mean it isn't "interesting."

christopher

I was going for both intersting and odd bands. Just because everyone went for the Jazz infused part doesn't mean I'm calling it odd. That's the interesting side of this post. I was hoping for more weird grindcore bands that have different genres mixed in. Jeez, would everyone have felt better if I just put "genre mixing: instead of "concepts"? Le Scrawl has always been a favorite and I was hoping there was something else like it out there. The second post got what I was going for with the Hawaiian grindcore

Jazz and metal aren't concepts.

Jazz and metal aren't concepts.

in essence, every metal band who set out to create a specific sound have a concept, as they have a specific set of parameters they are setting themselves in order to create what they want to create. A band who say we wish to fuse metal and jazz together could be considered a concept band, as thats what a concept is, a set of parameters by which the art you are creating is being forced to adhere to.

Nearly every band mentioned thus far I have found interesting and entertaining, and adhering to the threads subject heading.

Yeah, I definitely took this thread to be more of "this band has three drummers and a basoon player" or "grindcore band with a singer that's a dog" and not "bands that mix weird genres."

Well put.

Of course the retort could take this to its logical extreme and say "if every band that sets out to create a specific sound has a concept, every band is a concept band." Or, every decent band is a concept band. If a band doesn't set out to create a specific sound, they're probably not much of a band.

Well, thats the thing though, alot of bands do go out to create a particular sound, but they don't set out parameters by which they must adhere, they simply replicate and push forward thier own influences. Almost every band story starts with 'we just wanted to make fast heavy music, and wrote what came naturally to us', not 'we had to' or whatever. Its when a band forces itself into a niche, and doesn't let itself out of it, that it becomes a concept band.

And no, fusing styles does not a concept band make.
