Definitely all great bands, Indestructible's right about Faith No More; awesome albums. With Tool, I'd say the most accessible release would be Aenima, though my favorite is Lateralus, closely followed by Undertow. With High On Fire IMO, you cant really go wrong, but maybe start with Blessed Black Wings or Death Is This Communion, and with Testament definitely check out The New Order.

In light of some of the sexist bullshit I've read recently in some of the threads on here, I'm gonna make my response all about the ladies. Also, a bit of fair warning: many of these aren't metal, because (1) the OP never specified that as a requirement, and (2) many of the best vocals in music are NOT in the metal genre (sorry, it's just true).

In no particular order:
Sarah McLachlan
Tori Amos
Neko Case
Regina Spektor
Amy Winehouse
Sarah Brightman
Joss Stone
Norah Jones
Joanna Newsom
Emiliana Torrini
Cat Power
Adele

Alanis Morrisette
Fiona Apple
Suzanne Vega
Melissa Etheridge
Liz Phair
Ani Difranco

Elly Jackson (La Roux)
Gwen Stefani (No Doubt)
Dolores O'Riordan (The Cranberries)
Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses, The Breeders, Belly)
Kim Deal (Pixies, The Breeders)
Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Björk (The Sugarcubes)
Siouxie Sioux (Siouxie and the Banshees)

Ehh, it's all preference really. Howard is probably a better vocalist technically, but Jesse sings with so much emotion and passion, and his screams are brutal. Also I like Alive Or Just Breathing the best out of any KSE album, so I'm a little more partial to him. Also, not everyone that likes Jesse hates Howard.

How can you listen to metal and say that? You seem to be on a pretty heavy self-destructive streak in several other threads here lately, so I'm going to take it easy on you here.

Suffice to say that just because I love metal doesn't mean that I have to believe in the incredibly short-sighted and myopic idea that every single aspect of metal (vocals, drumming, guitar playing, whatever else you can think of) is the best thing out there, and is better than the same musical element in every other music genre. That kind of concept should just scream "ridiculous" to any rational thinker, because it is just dripping - no, better yet, overflowing - with generalization.

It's so much more difficult to sing melodically, beautifully and on key than it is to scream your fucking head off. Of all people, I would think that you would get that.

Well it really depends on what kind of metal you're talking about. I don't think anyone is going to argue that Barney Greenway is a better singer than Josh Groban, but look at singers in some power metal bands. You can't deny that they are some of the best singers out there.

Of all people, I would think that you would get that. :rolleyes:I disagree slightly, in the sense that it's deceptively difficult to do screaming/growling vocals without destroying your throat or voice box. That's why guys like the singer from Avenged Sevenfold and Jamey from 3 Inches of Blood had to stop screaming early in their careers because they did it wrong, while guys like Jacob Bannon have been doing it for years and years with no problems.

As far as my tastes go, technical proficency is much less important than feeling and passion. Sure, Tarja from Nightwish can probably hit higher notes than Corin Tucker, but she doesn't have that soul.

Most of my favorite vocalists are metal vocalists because most of my favorite music is metal music. Shouldn't come as too much of a shock. Here's some faves in some vague top to bottom order:

Peter Gabriel

Rob Zombie

But also...everyone from bands I regularly listen to, because I wouldn't listen to them if I didn't like the vocals.

Nat, shame on you for mentioning all those vocalists, some of which flat out suck (Joan Jett? Really?) and one of them not being Lauryn Hill.

Also, soul is word idiots use to try and claim honesty means anything and to haphazardly justify a pussification of sound. Case in point: Lars Ulrich claims that during the Black Album recording, Bob Rock taught them a new word: soulful.

Being "soulful" killed James Hetfield.
