Yeah...or Blood Mountain because none of it's "crazy" or Crack the Skye because none of it's "epic." If it doesn't sound like any other Mastodon album before it, then in my opinion, it doesn't REALLY sound like Mastodon.

Yes, it is. I don't do hype, as I'm sure we're all aware. I was expecting it be pretty mediocre. And I know there will be a shit-ton of fans who wanted a thrash record, and they're going to be so disappointed that it isn't a thrash record that they won't be able to appreciate it for what it is, which is a modern metal record, and it's a damn fine one of those.

I've never heard any Mastodon album besides Crack the Skye. I fucking LOVE that album. And I think the reason I haven't explored their back-catalogue is because I'm afraid their older stuff won't compare.

I've never heard any Mastodon album besides Crack the Skye. I fucking LOVE that album. And I think the reason I haven't explored their back-catalogue is because I'm afraid their older stuff won't compare.

That really shouldn't be relevant. The only time I think it's relevant for an album to fit to a style is when they push it as such. That's why I'm disappointed with, for example, the lack of dark music etc. on the new Alice Cooper album, because it's being pushed as a concept album about nightmares and doesn't sound like one (and some of the songs on it just plain suck).

I'd be disappointed in the nwe Anthrax if it was meant to be a return to their early thrash sound. Because it's not. It's not even a thrash album. But because it's not meant to be that, the fact that it doesn't sound like that doesn't matter.

But apart from cases like that, albums should be considered in their own right. Look at it this way, if 'The Hunter' had a different band name on it, would it be good? Would you like it? The fact that it doesn't sound like other Mastodon music is entirely irrelevant.

I pretty much agree with everything you said there. I guess I left some useful information out... although I've never listened to any full albums before Crack the Skye, I have heard a few songs here and there and seen them live a couple times, and I just wasn't interested. So perhaps it wasn't an accurate statement when I said "I think the reason I haven't explored their back-catalogue is because I'm afraid their older stuff won't compare." My mistake. Although there was some truth to it, because ever since hearing CTS I've considered the possibility that there is something in their older material for me.

However, the new album instantly turned me off. I only made it halfway through. Even without comparing it to Crack the Skye, it just isn't something I can sit and listen to any further without forcing myself.

I'm all for experimentation and expanding the boundaries, but when you try and put a genre of music together with it's diametric opposition, i.e. folk music, it just doesn't work. Metal and hip-hop going together, as bad as it turned out makes sense in theory because it's about moving crowds and making noise. But with folk it doesn't work because you essentially have to switch to another section in order to highlight it, i.e. the acoustic interludes

I'll say this though, it is pretty good when they're in black metal mode.

It just sounds like melodic death by numbers. All the songs are really boring. Even with the guest singers. It's like someone made a really dull Arch Enemy tribute album.

Yeah, I felt that way the first Sabaton album I listened to. Then they brought out another one which sounded exactly the same. Then another one. Then I saw them live and quite literally fell asleep. So, so boring once the novelty wears off.

The Art of War is the best version of their stuff.

I admit it does bother me a little bit that Brad doesn't bother listening to a lot of the good shit I recommend him but thought Sabaton was so good. I mean, they're solid, and I concur with Ravenheart that The Art of War is their best album - but they're one of those bands that I don't even really listen to because I don't think they're that special, and we all know how often I'm accused of liking boring, generic traditional/power metal.
