Usually I have to be in the mood to listen to metal, but I can throw that album on anytime and be into it.

Why? If they're short it doesn't make a difference.

What's the last album you can think of where there were 13 tracks and no filler?

ravenheart
09-07-2011, 01:30 PM
Does it have to be exactly 13?

DethMaiden

New Fucked Up has 18 great songs. With 13 he may have a point.

ravenheart

Usually his point is more than 10 is bad.

powerslave_85
09-07-2011, 01:41 PM
There are 13-song albums with filler, there are 8 song albums with filler. I don't really give a shit as long as it's good.

JRA
09-07-2011, 01:44 PM
My point is once bands start going past the 10 song mark is where the not so great stuff starts seeping in. Sure there are some exceptions (Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland comes to mind), but if you have more than 10 songs and the songs aren't under 2 minutes (grindcore be damned), you're trying too hard.
That was probably one of the reasons why Leviathan was so great. It was short, lean and to the point.

I think it depends on the genre. 8-10 is the sweet spot for metal, 12-14 is fine for most other, non-prog genres.

JRA
09-07-2011, 02:09 PM
Eh, even for hip-hop going beyond 12 tracks is kind of pushing it. To use a similar example to Leviathan, one of the reasons why Illmatic is cited as the greatest hip-hop albums of all time is because it's 10 tracks. No skits, no instrumentals, just an intro and 9 tracks of pure dope rhymes.

I guess I just don't subscribe to the idea that an album needs to be 100% filler free in order to be great. Rancid's ...And Out Come the Wolves has 19 tracks. Are some better than others? Sure, but it's still a great fucking album.

Rancid is a punk band though, and I presume their average song length is 3 minutes?

I take it that means Mr. "I have to have a dissenting opinion about everything" didn't like it?

Before, you even respond, I'll defend my point of view:
I know, without a doubt, that there's nothing profoundly creative or "interesting" going on here. However, it's AOR/Melodic Rock - a genre that is pretty much stagnant and uncreative by definition. I've never gone into an AOR-ish album with expectations to have it be pushing boundaries or anything. Toby Hitchcock has a surprisingly amazing voice, and it's very, very rare I find myself saying that anymore about someone I didn't know about before checking out an album. And ultimately I just find the songs to be really enjoyable. They're catchy, which is obviously the focus of this sort of music, but they're just genuinely good I think. There's maybe 2 songs of the 12 I don't particularly enjoy. The rest I think is golden, it's my favorite album in the AOR/Melodic Rock genre from this year.

Most of the versions on that album are amazing. Normally I don't like live albums compiled from multiple shows. Certainly not from a 10 year period of recordings, but this one is as near to perfect as such an album can be.
