From the sound of it, the new Vader is gonna be one of the best albums of this year! Which probably means a killer US tour from them in support of it!

I'm really excited for it, and to be able to hear it. Probably on release day, like a normal, unprivileged, average American citizen...I listened to it over the weekend. Is it good? Very. Is is the best death metal release in the last ten years? Probably not. I mean, I do like it a lot, but it's really not that much more awesome than Vader's last release, for example, or several other excellent death metal releases that I can think of in the last few years. I guess I was just expecting more "holy shit" moments than the album actually delivered.

Still, if this means a decent tour like JD is hypothesizing about, then count me in. :fist:

I don't get the "I want to break everything in the room" sludge vibe from this record, but it's in a good way. There are a few Isis heavy moments, but what sludge album doesn't have that?

I don't think that was the point of the album. Hell, I wouldn't really call it sludge.Yeah, the new Bloodiest is not purely a sludge album in my opinion. There's elements of it in there, maybe, but I consider it almost equal parts post-metal and sludge / doom.

If you guys like the new Bloodiest, you should really check out Peoria's Minsk. Sanford Parker is part of that band (although they're on indefinite hiatus right now), and he recorded and engineered the new Bloodiest and Indian albums, both of which are fucking awesome.

Speaking of the new Indian, I read a particularly sexy review (http://www.jukeboxmetal.com/2011/indian-guiltless/) of that one on the interwebs not too long ago... ;)

You like death metal a lot more than me – I'm basically not that interested in straight death metal or tech death at all anymore – and I think the new Vader is the best death metal album not made by Nile in the last...quite a while, if not decade. So I dunno if you're a little bit desensitized to it, but from my perspective, it's fucking excellent.

It's just that albums like Bolt Thrower's "Those Once Loyal" come to mind immediately as being really strong contenders for top death metal albums of the decade, along with releases by bands such as Nile, Behemoth, Dismember, Revocation, Quo Vadis, Hail of Bullets and so many others. (EDIT: Plus Necrophagist, Origin, Obscura, Arsis and Decrepit Birth in the tech death area)

Still, though - it is definitely a damned good album. No doubt about that. :fist:

For me, if you wanna call Landmine Marathon death metal they'd be the closest thing to dethroning it this decade, but I don't know where that line goes between DM and grind for them.

For me, if you wanna call Landmine Marathon death metal they'd be the closest thing to dethroning it this decade, but I don't know where that line goes between DM and grind for them.Well, Encyclopedia Metallum lists them as "Death/Thrash Metal", but I would pretty strongly disagree with that label. The DM part, maybe - but the thrash part just doesn't apply. I've always considered them a grindcore band until reading your post...I guess I'd be OK with with a grindcore / DM classification. As much as I love them, though, there are other albums which are more in the death metal wheelhouse that were clearly better to me.

You should really listen to "Those Once Loyal" in its entirety sometime. It's a true fucking death metal classic (even though it's only six years old ).

Landmine Marathon is pretty hard to classify. They are definitely grindy but their base is death metal. Still, how would you classify Bolt Thrower? Just plain death metal, or what? Landmine sounds so much like them.

Landmine sounds so much like them. It's funny you should mention that, because I happen to agree. There are a few LM songs that I swear are directly inspired by Bolt Thrower. The classification for Bolt Thrower is another tough one, because they are generally considered to be one of the founding fathers of grindcore. However, I would say that their early material is what grindcore used to sound like, and that grindcore itself has evolved since then into something slightly different, which Bolt Thrower does not resemble anymore. I think their last few albums are definitely just straight-up death metal, and nowadays, typical "grindcore" sounds more like Pig Destroyer, Nasum, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Trap Them, Rotten Sound and the like (which definitely ain't Bolt Thrower).

Clear as mud?

It shouldn't be that funny. I'm far from the first person who thought of that similarity  I think they're known for sounding like Bolt Thrower.

I would say Bolt Thrower's first album is grindcore, maybe deathgrind. Their other albums are sorta just mid-tempo death metal. Their guitar tone is what makes them unique, I think.

Burn My Eyes has a really weird tone - it's groove metal, but it sounds like nu metal. The More Things Change is a little better, but the songs aren't that good. Nothing. That's their only good album

Burn My Eyes has a really weird tone - it's groove metal, but it sounds like nu metal. The More Things Change is a little better, but the songs aren't that good. The next are actual nu-metal/rap metal, so skip those. Through The Ashes of Empires is a poor man's The Blackening, not nearly as good in my opinion.

Interesting. Well, I'm gonna download them, and let y'all know how I feel.

Don't listen to him. Burn My Eyes is a great album, and I don't see how it's much like nu metal at all. The More Things Change is basically the same style, but a little heavier, I guess.

As for Burning Red and Supercharger, they're really not that bad. I know I'm the only guy on the internet you'll ever hear this from, but I like both of those albums. And they're not "nu-metal" albums, either. The Burning Red comes close, but not Supercharger.

And Through the Ashes is good, just not as good as the Blackening. And yeah, The Blackening is their best. But seriously, listen to all of their stuff and don't ignore it just because the internet likes to hate on Machine Head.

Yep, this is fantastic. It sounds almost like a completely different band now. Francesco, the new guitar player, is incredible. Musically, he's putting together stuff that blows out of the water any notion of "deathcore" (if you can even call this album that) being simplistic and boring single note chugging. Beautiful song.

I'm not too big on this song, mainly because of the horribly generic breakdown, which is something that ASP is too good to be doing. I'm not a huge fan by any means, though. I just dig a few songs from their last two albums. I'm looking forward to seeing them and moshing to them at Mayhem fest, but they're not a band I would see at one of their own shows. Easily the best deathcore band, at least that I know of.

Wow, I think this is hands down my favorite song on the album. Really catchy main hook part, and it starts with about 2 minutes of a great, soft piano playing solo. This album is so much smarter than anything deathcore has done before.

No, no, it's gone!!!"

Great record. This is my first time checking them out (for an extended amount of time). The only issue I have with this record is the clean vocals, I don't like them at all.

Agreed. I love it, but they just drag the last part on wayyy too long.

Yeah the clean vocals aren't really anything special, but I highly recommend checking out their album Sumerian Daemons. They didn't rely nearly as much on an orchestra back then, but the record is still more atmospheric than mostly everything. There aren't any clean vocals, either.

SO happy they finally finished this damn album. Been following and supporting them for a good 3 years now, even under a different name... feels so good that they're finally gonna be releasing this in September.

Yeah, Carving Desert Canyons never gets old. Looking back, I enjoy it a lot more than the Collective, even though the latter should be a better album in every way.

Oh, it definitely is. Conjures up such vivid imagery. They're also one of the best bands ever. ;)

Cool news about the new one - more guest vocals from Jessika Kenney (of Two Hunters fame) as well as guest vocals by Mr. Aaron Fucking Turner from Isis. I'm thinking it'll be about a top 3 album for 2011.

Okay, cool cover, and this was a really cool album. A few duds that were questionably very high in running order, but all in all probably my favorite thrash album of the year. These guys are pretty fucking consistent.

This song makes me think of Beowulf, particularly the scene where he's on the pyre and the Geat woman is wailing at the sky in lament. Listen to the vocals and tell me that's not what's happening.
