Yeah - I don't too many full album reviews anymore ever since I quit my radio show, but I will probably actually review the album, since I care about it and the band so much - I have a lot to say.

In short: (after 3 complete listens, plus a few extra to some tracks)
I like it more than Paradise Lost. The track sequencing feels a bit weird to me, but overall it's pretty great. The songs just feel better and a bit more dynamic to me overall. Considering they had every opportunity to just completely sell out with this album, the fact that it's this good is a pleasant surprise. It feels like they tried to make a new version of Paradise Lost that revisits their older style a bit more. "When All is Lost" is seriously one of the best songs they've done I think.

I was referring to the double album version. After several more listens it doesn't seem as weird, but still, I feel like there's a lack of "finality" with the final song.

dat sabbath sampleI don't think the Sabbath part is a sample. I think they're actually playing the riff themselves on a guitar. The reason I say this is that I've never heard a guitar tone like that from Sabbath. On the other hand, the part I do think is a sample is the drums. They're clearly sampled from Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" (although the drum beat is exactly the same as "Sweet Leaf", and so they're interchangeable in that sense, but if you listen to the Zeppelin track and then the above song you can clearly tell they're the same).

But this song, and what I've heard of them so far, sounds faaaaaaar from traditional black metal. True, they still have that dark satanic message and image. But if anything, this sounds like blackened death metal. Hell, there's almost a breakdown in this song. Does anyone else know what I mean?

Their first three albums were fucking great. You should start with Dark Medieval Times and listen to their discography in chronological order. You'll definitely notice some changes along the way.

I'm not a krallice fan, but I think you're going the right route by listening to them. I used to hate black metal, but last year I heard this album called Quietly, Undramatically by a band called Woe and it simply floored me. Hipster black metal is practically the cobblestone path to real black metal. Now I like stuff like Marduk, Antaeus, and Behexen.

Personally, I think Devin Townsend is one of the most creative musicians to ever live. Every album he makes is completely different from the ones before it. I love all of his work (with the exception of Ghost, which I find to be really dull.)
