February is the grimmest and kvltest of all months, so you best get to know your black metal. (This thread is just for fun and to help foster some knowledge in our board members who might not know about black metal that much!)

WEEK ONE: ROOTS

May not be black metal in the strictest sense, but it definitely helped form the genre.

----

Venom - Black Metal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHmzFVDjVnM&feature=related)

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Zs9nNlwuDUI/SFvbhQG0OPI/AAAAAAAABhk/Htr7Q013GNs/s400/venom+band.jpg

Venom is more like a speed/heavy metal band, but they helped form black metal by singing mostly about satan and evil, and using satanic imagery in their artwork and live shows. Also, they coined the term "black metal."

----

Hellhammer - Messiah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_dQwbsP7Sg)

http://www.metalkult.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/hellhammer-stevewarrior.jpg

From Switzerland, started off as more of a crusty/d-beat type of band but eventually added distortion and more black metal elements.

----

Celtic Frost - Procreation Of The Wicked (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaytIdLYtPc)

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/statusainthood/cfrist.jpg

Formed from the ashes of Hellhammer. One of the biggest influences in death, thrash, and black metal. Later an influence in progressive and gothic metal. Also, one of my top 5 bands of all time.

----

Bathory - A Fine Day To Die (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyYnstGB3rM)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d9/Qourthon_Bathory.jpg/220px-Qourthon_Bathory.jpg

Probably the only "first wave of black metal" band that actually played music the closest to black metal. Also pretty much single handedly created the viking metal genre. Without Bathory, there wouldn't be black metal.

----

Slayer - The Antichrist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1aPQY0c7zY)

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/500/23662473/Slayer++ca+1983.jpg

Throwing Slayer's first album up here too. The imagery and lyrics and general sound went a long way in helping black metal get started. SPIKES AND LEATHER, FUCK YEAH.

----

Mercyful Fate - Evil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ6s89QWYjc)

http://www.metalneverlies.com/Mercyful%20Fate%20pic.jpg

Probably helped black metal develop the most in terms of lyrical content. Pure evil when you really read it, but the music is (amazing, but) strictly heavy metal.

----

If you have any other bands that you feel like really helped shape the face of current black metal, shout 'em out!

omg racist

Just kidding. I celebrated the start of black metal history month yesterday by listening to Blut aus Nord on the way to class. It was snowing sideways, 30-40 mph winds. Sucked shit.

Von-Lamb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAboE3GCl3M)
http://www.metalkingdom.net/band/img/d3/1702.jpg
The first and best USBM band. So much more fucking evil, bizarre and satanic than all the Norwegian bands combined. And Varg wore a Von shirt at his trial, so it's ok for Second Wave of BMers to like them. They reunited last year and sound like Emperor and look like cholos.

Sarcófago- Sex, Drinks & Metal! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91Kq3vtmqrY)
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_g_NGiFFUKck/S-brtsT69JI/AAAAAAAAAdw/PyXgsGsfLfA/s400/sarcofago-30092009.jpg
Quintessential Brazilian war death noise. The first few albums are good, then they put out kinda boring thrash stuff, then they put out weird drum machine stuff only adored by true satanic skinheads. Wagner Antichrist is now an econ professor. If you are a false don't entry, because you'll be burned and died.

This will definitely be a good topic.

Although this band may not have had such a major influence like the bands already mentioned, I think Sarcófago should have their place here.

They really should. I lost my music a while back and I never went back and got Sarcofago again. I'll put them on my list. ;)

Blasphemy- War Command (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m1FhUg7Z2g)
http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/5515563/Blasphemy+Ross+Bay+Cult+Eternal.jpg
Superior Canadian War Metal. Really the most influential band for most of the bestial/war black metal bands of today. Actual grave desecrators, cult members etc. and the only black(death) metal band I can think of with a black guy in them. They will also fight you, and probably brought the gasmask/grenade/bullets to black metal.

While I love each and every one of the bands here so far, none of these are bands to get a foothold of black metal with.

They're still black metal. I don't know alot about black metal, but Dimmus vocals are black metal vocals.

A Fine Day To Die is not a black metal song. You should have picked something like Total Destruction, Woman of Dark Desires, 13 Candles, Sacrifice or Rite of Darkness/Reap of Evil

He was referring to the bands in this thread, none of which I think anyone would describe as "black metal" if they had to use one genre descriptor, at least certainly not in the stereotypical Scandinavian second way of Black Metal style.

Yea, Deathcrush is worth a mention, though one of the songs from it pisses me off cos its a direct rip off of the Black Metal riff.

WEEK TWO: LORDS OF CHAOS

Probably the most famous of black metal bands, the second-wave of black metal in Norway gave the genre the black metal sound, image, and controversy that still goes on today. Only Norwegian bands for now:

Mayhem - Freezing Moon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58o17dnB6hk)

http://www.cultureblues.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Mayhem+_Band.jpg

Probably the most well-known second wave black metal band. Classic in every sense of the word and more than enough controversy to last a lifetime.

----

Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtT3AIX3_js)

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/12761729/Darkthrone++Nor.gif

In my opinion, Darkthrone played the best and more genre-defining type of black metal at the time the genre was just getting started.

----

Burzum - Jesus' Tod (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXu8M6q6v84)

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/47365027/Burzum+Vikernes.jpg

The most notorious man in black metal; maybe even heavy metal in general. But his Burzum recordings still stand out as genre-defining black metal.

----

Gorgoroth - Profetens Apenbaring (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nf_zOPMQYQ)

http://img.listal.com/image/655329/600full-gorgoroth.jpg

In my opinion, Gorgoroth is the most consistent (and consistently outstanding) second wave black metal band. Still going strong today, stronger than ever.

----

Immortal - Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32n1AK6o5i0)

http://www.tartareandesire.com/bands/images/immortal.jpg

The biggest black metal band of all time? Maybe. But Immortal started out creating some of the grimmest and most frostbitten black metal out there.

----

Emperor - I Am The Black Wizards (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgQRRI9goFg)

http://www.metal-archives.com/images/3/0/30_photo.jpg

Without Emperor, symphonic black metal bands would have scant reason to exist. Ihsahn still continues as a solo artist through today.

----

That's it! If you have any more Norwegian black metal artists you can think of that are among the best and biggest of the 2nd wave of black metal, post 'em!

Enslaved - Fenris (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pW_mDX520Y)

http://www.metallian.com/enslaved.jpg

Incorporated Viking and Progressive influences into their brand of black metal. Gradually became more progressive and plays a drastically different style of black metal today.
