3. SubRosa - No Help for the Mighty Ones
4. Rwake - Rest

My #6 and #8. This is just a doom and sludge kind of year for me.

If anyone's looking for some atmospheric ambient depressive-type black metal, Ah Ciliz's Reawakening Ancient Sorrow is fantastic.

Actually I probably have to check it out.

A lot of people are asking me to play Donkey Punch on my show, but I can't stand that shitty first single, maybe there is a decent track on the new album?

Maybe, but I'm not the liking the odds.

So, any new Sumerian releases out soon? Apart from the shitty bands on the roster like Asking Alexandria or I See Stars, I mean.

1. Anaal Nathrakh - Passion
2. Opeth - Heritage
3. Between The Buried And Me - The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues EP
4. Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony
5. Mastodon - The Hunter
6. Protest The Hero - Scurrilous
7. The Black Dahlia Murder - Ritual
8. Weedeater - Jason... The Dragon
9. Loss - Despond
10. Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
11. Wolves in the Throne Room - Celestial Lineage
12. Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction
13. Deicide - To Hell With God
14. Fucked Up - David Comes to Life
15. Burzum - Fallen
16. Revocation - Chaos of Forms
17. Machine Head - Unto The Locust
18. Red Fang - Murder The Mountains
19. Unearth - Darkness in the Light
20. Yob - Atma

Haven't listened to the new Dream Theater, Symphony X, Liturgy, All Shall Perish, or Anthrax.

1. The Black Dahlia Murder - Ritual
2. Old Silver Key - Tales of Wanderings
3. Mastodon - The Hunter
4. Hate Eternal - Phoenix Amongst The Ashes
5. Hugh Laurie - Let Them Talk
6. Revocation - Chaos In Forms
7. Foo Fighters - Wasting Light
8. Machine Head - Unto The Locust
9. Protest The Hero - Scurrilous
10. Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony

This is going to change drastically, as I still need form an honest opinion on the new Evile, Anthrax, All Shall Perish, Blink 182, Unearth, DTP amongst others. I have been quite busy the last month so some music that is requiring repeated listens is getting shunned more than it should.

It's a pretty good record. Much better than The Infection, but it doesn't hold a candle to The Impossibility of Reason or Rescurrection.

The five finger death punch album leaked. Not that many around here care, just putting it out there. Its no where near my album of the year, but its not a bad record, there's a few standout tracks, and some ones that are just more of the same. It will probably grow on me with repeated listens.

I hope so to. They would've been the perfect opener for the Anthrax/Testament tour that's starting in North America next week. They would've been able to play for an audience who could get into them right away. Hopefully they can get on some kind of major tour and build a solid following over here.

After around 100 albums so far, these are pretty much locked, in no order:

Leprous - Bilateral
Anthrax - Worship Music
Burden - A Hole In The Shell
Pentagram - Last Rites
Karl Demata Band - Cross The Mountain
Kruk - It Will Not Come Back
Graveyard - Hisingen Blues
Arch Enemy - Khaos Legions

I need to relisten to a bunch of stuff, but Surtr, Orchid, Castle, Heathendom, Havok, Kamchatka, Onslaught, Evile, The Answer, Eric Sardinas, Pombagira, Charred Walls of The Damned, Pylon and Iced Earth are all in contention.

Still to listen: Inmoria, Crylord, Venom, Astral Doors, Brainstorm, Gurd, Isole, Memory Driven, Riotgod, Svolk, Rote Mare, Sinner, Loch Vostok, Mortal Sin, The Quill, Iron Claw, The Wheel, Leslie West, Doogie White, Gary Barden, Leather Nun, Eldritch, Lonely Kamel, Chris Duarte Group, Freund Hein, Grifter, Chillihounds, Black Oath.

Definitely not making the cut: Wolf, Arch/Matheos, Nightrage, Ilium, Opeth, Mindflow, Wishdoom, Holy Force, The New Black, U.D.O., Lazarus A.D., Eden's Curse, Wolverine, Rhapsody of Fire, Coldspell, Vicious Rumors, Believer, Powerwolf, Johnny Winter, FFDP.

I remember reading in an interview that Thulcandra is meant to be 100% unabashed Dissection worship, a tribute to the band basically. I remember hearing some of it when they came out with their last album, and it was pretty good.

Nope. Generic, generic, generic in my opinion. Their music does absolutely nothing for me.

As for your top 10, you should check out some of these other albums guys around here have on their lists. It's an incredible year for metal as a whole. As for -core-ish music, I'd recommend checking out the latest Unearth if you haven't yet. It's probably my second favorite album by them.

Let me know what you think. Don't judge them by their song "Man Made Disaster" that they have a music for. They use clean vocals sometimes but I think this song has too much of it. That song kinda gives off a scene vibe. Easily their weakest sobutton their record but may be one of their most popular.

Let me know what you think. Don't judge them by their song "Man Made Disaster" that they have a music for. They use clean vocals sometimes but I think this song has too much of it. That song kinda gives off a scene vibe. Easily their weakest sobutton their record but may be one of their most popular.

Okay. I gave their album a shot, and overall, I don't think it's catching on with me. I listened to it, waited an hour, tried to remember a single catchy riff, and I couldn't. Not that it was bad, it just was... meh. And I wasn't a fan of their clean vocals.

Maybe I should give it another shot sometime? I dunno. I'm just not feeling it. I feel like I might potentially like it later if I was in a different mood. Thanks for the recommendation, though.

Love the new Insomnium. There's some criticism of Across the Dark, but I loved that album and I'm not sure yet whether I like One for Sorrow better. I also love Insomnium's clean singing and think it works for the band, although I may be in the minority on that.

The new Iced Earth has some really good tracks (Dystopia, Dark City, Equilibrium) but some that I really don't care for. I cringed during "Anguish of Youth" and had to skip it. I will say that I think Stu is a better singer and the perfect replacement for the band. I may delete the songs I don't like and pretend they aren't on the album. :)

I thought Across The Dark was fantastic. His Cleans add an ambiance that a lot of modern Melodic Death Metal bands lack these days. It's haunting in the most awesome of ways.

I liked the Iced Earth album. I havn't heard a ton of their stuff but it was on par with what I have heard. Stu's voice is crazy awesome. I am bummed Into Eternity lost him but I feel like he will grow so much doing this.

I only listend to it once, but I am shocked that I did not like the new Iced Earth. Dystopia was good but the rest I didn't care for. While I love the album lyrically it feels like something is missing. I also know that Stu Block can do better vocals.

Seriously? If he has had a better vocal performance than what he's doing on the new Iced Earth than I must hear it. He has his own voice but also does great a sounding like both Barlow and Ripper in certian parts.

As for the album itself, the title track is really good. There's a couple of other good ones but nothing that impressive. The album maybe a grower but so far it just sounds like the same old, same old from Schaffer.

If you want to hear a better vocal performance by Stu Block, listen to The Scattering Of Ashes by Into Eternity.
I find nothing wrong with the same old same old from Schaffer, that's why I thought I would like it. From the interviews it seemed like Schaffer and Stu had a great time working on this album. The fans who heard this album already said it was great but I do not hear it.

New Puscifer (solo project by Maynard James Keenan of A Perfect Circle and Tool) is great. As expected he ditched the more dance oriented direction and the lyrics are no too longer perverted. It's a much more atmospheric album and the lyrics are for the most part a lot more meaningful (which will probably please APC and Tool fanatics who hate the first album).

The only thing I dislike is there is no song that I would consider one of the best I've ever heard like Momma Sed or The Humbling River.

On the Iced Earth debate...

Dystopia is quickly becoming my favorite Iced Earth album, no joke. Granted, I don't think they've ever really crafted a true masterpiece or anything. Their best stuff was generally only ever "very good" (outside of the Gettysburg Trilogy, which is one of my favorite things ever done by anyone ). But there's just a certain awesome quality to Dystopia that I love. To me it basically comes off as a great song-based album much in the way Something Wicked This Way Comes did... except this one actually flows really well and has virtually no filler. Sure, none of the songs are really incredible, but if you were really expecting INCREDIBLE stuff, you're listening to the wrong band. Schaffer managed to create an album that's chock full of no-frills, straight-forward ass kicking songs, and actually nailed the perfect balance of thrash, ballads, melody, and midtempo traditional metal awesomeness. And Stu's voice is MUCH better than I ever expected it to be (have always hated Into Eternity). Comes off as about 50% Barlow, 30% Ripper, and 20% of his own style and sound. Overall a great fit.

New Insomnium is pretty damn good. Through the Shadows was definitely the best song for the single, but I think "Only One Who Waits", "Unsung", and even the instrumentals are fucking great. Only One Who Waits is just an awesome mix of heavy riffs with an amazing interlude near the end. I'm a fan of the clean vocals addition and this just adds on to Across the Dark for me.

Probably raising his family like a responsible and making six figures in his prestigious career.

He needs to put his family and career second and put giving us awesome post-rock/metal recs first.

True that! He'd be flipping a shit about the new Russian Circles. I miss that ol' geezer. :snivel:

No, he's eating mass amounts of Chipotle and not telling us.

What if he never comes back.

Natrlhi hath forsaken us all.

Wine never posts anymore either. It's nice to be missed. I miss y'all back. I already told a little bit of the story in the "Now Eating" thread, but basically I've been traveling for work a lot lately, with a vacation to Hawaii squeezed in earlier this month. The business trips have been...business (one highlight was getting to see Night#2 of the Power of the Riff Festival in San Fran, I guess), but the Hawaii trip was fucking incredible.

Speaking of incredible (and back on topic), the new Russian Circles is blowing me away right now. I have to leave my laptop and go down to the lab right now to run some samples, and I'm not too fucking happy about it. :bouville: :flame:

Vader - Welcome to the Morbid Reich
Ulcerate - The Destroyers of All
Noisear - Subvert the Dominant Paradigm
Mastodon - The Hunter
Exhumed - All Guts No Glory
Cannabis Corpse - Beneath Grow Lights Thou Shalt Rise
The Black Dahlia Murder - Ritual
Autopsy - Macabre Eternal

Absu - Abzu

Gonna go through a bunch more listens and have it finalized by the end of the year.

The awful child choir is my #1 by a mile. If that last song was just a filler song it would make that cd a lock for my Top 5 but that song is so godawful and unlistenable that it ruins the experience for me. Hopefully I get over it at some point but I can't believe they did that or thought people would like it.

mastodon421

I'm not saying the children's choir was good, but it wasn't that prominent to ruin my enjoyment of the album at all. Who We Are is a really good song besides the choir imo.

This.....

Seriously if that choir ruined the song/album for you then.... I don't even know what to say.

I'm sure I'll get over it at some point but currently I can't even listen to the song. It's like nails down a chalkboard to me. I literally can't think of anything more annoying that a kid's chorus period, let alone on a metal album.

I was driving home from a poker tournament yesterday and listened to the cd twice and every song is great until that one. I listened to it the 1st time and I didn't like any part of it but 2nd time I thought the Maiden-ish dual guitar part into the solos were kinda cool. Honestly though it kinda annoys me that there is song called This is the End which I love and then you hear This is Who We Are 3 songs later.

Maybe I'm overreacting but it's redundant and the song just kinda plods along and repeats that line over and over again. This is coming from a guy who considers The Blackening the best cd of the last 10 years so maybe I hold them to higher expectations but this cd would probably be my #1 of 2011 if that song wasn't so annoying to me. The Sentinel cover in it's place would have been much better and this one a barely tolerable bonus track.

I do stick to my initial statement though. I'm all about experimenting but that choir is a major fail and they're complete idiots for doing it when they're right on the cusp of finally re-making a name for themselves and headlining shows in the US again. Just my take...

w00tasaurus
10-22-2011, 11:44 AM
The song is also ruined for me because of the children. The parts in between the chorus are great but I can't relax and listen to the song knowing I'd have to skip a chunk of it later on, the sound of the children makes me cringe.

I also can't stand Another Brick in the Wall for this reason

Sanitarium78
10-23-2011, 08:03 AM
I think This Is Who We Are is great along with the rest of the album. The kids choir doesn't bother me at all. Considering this a band that recorded the The Burning Red and Supercharger a child choir is hardly the worst thing they've ever done.

Some shaking up going on in my top 10. I think if that Protest the Hero album came out later in the year it would have fared better for me because it's really infectious at first, but after too many listens, it's all just a little bit too much. Still a top 20 record, but yeah...just too frenetic to beat some of the albums with more dynamism:

1. Fucked Up - David Comes to Life
2. Wolves in the Throne Room - Celestial Lineage
3. SubRosa - No Help for the Mighty Ones
4. The War on Drugs - Slave Ambient
5. Hammers of Misfortune - 17th Street

7. Altar of Plagues - Mammal

Sigh. I wanted to like Thirteen (not spelling out that whole title) and its not doing anything for me. I heard Endgame once and loved it. I listened to this and was bored. Yup, and I'm going to have to check all of them out. And start going to more shows to interview bands, and record my radio show, and all that goes along with being in the small time amateur music biz.

Last year was so much easier to be able to digest albums and give them the proper listens they deserve.

This, except it's not really the speed that bothers me. If I want to listen to brutal death metal, I want to hear the guitars, not sporadic symphonic shit. Then again, if the guitars were mixed higher and more prominent, I might like the album more.

Beyond Creation is better, if that's the type of music you're looking for.

I will check them out.

I'm only keeping count out to 20 but the only death metal on that period is the Vader.

I know I have Necros Christos and Execration in my top 50. Maybe Autopsy.

Catching up on some 2011 releases...new additions...

Beyond Creation - The Aura
Falloch - Where Dead Spirits Remain
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony
Wolvhammer - The Obsidian Plains

Spreading my thoughts on the first three...

Beyond Creation sucked, relative to what I was hoping it would be, if you ask me. It combined everything I like about tech death and threw a little bit more sweepy wankery involved and put a deathcore twist to it all.

Falloch is a top 15 caliber release. Awesome. The Mantle esque Agalloch for a while, but then drops into some heavier territory. A really interesting release, I'll spin it again before I go to bed tonight.

Agony is exactly what I expected it would be. Tough, fast, heavy, same. I think the symphonic elements work fairly well here, but I know I'm in the minority with that.

Fleshgod Apocalypse are pretty boring in my opinion. Going fast gets really boring really quick.

Agreed.

Beyond Creation is better, if that's the type of music you're looking for.

This, except it's not really the speed that bothers me. If I want to listen to brutal death metal, I want to hear the guitars, not sporadic symphonic shit. Then again, if the guitars were mixed higher and more prominent, I might like the album more.

Thank you, I'm not the only one that thinks so. They kicked ass live, but bore me on record.
