Cool list. I'm trying to get into Lazarus AD but I like their 1st cd worlds better to me. I know I'm a thrash hound but that's their strength and this cd is severly lacking it. Seeing them Monday so I'll give it a few more spins

I feel the same way. The Onslaught is going to almost be impossible to beat. But Black Rivers Flow is a damn good Melodic Thrash Metal album. But it is quality songwriting, and I gotta support my Wisconsin Metal roots. :blaze:

Dev found out that Sumeria was released tonight:

Youtube Username : Poopynuggeteer

Hey all, try not to get sick of the songs before you get the whole record... These things always leak, but it sucks if you overdo it to early :) I think the label has released Juular as well, and we'll do a vid for it in a few weeks. Thanks for the support...release date is June 20th, and the presale starts May 16th.

My top 10 albums of 2011 as of 5/7/11.

1 - Sylosis - Edge of the Earth
2 - Between the Buried and Me - The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues
3 - The Human Abstract - Digital Veil
4 - Scale the Summit - The Collective
5 - Darkest Hour - The Human Romance
6 - Protest the Hero - Scurrilous
7 - Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising
8 - Becoming the Archetype - Celestial Completion
9 - Born of Osiris - The Discovery
10 - Obscura - Omnivium

While making this list I realized how many good albums have been released this year. Kinda hard to pick just 10 albums. It's been a great year for metal so far and it should get better. My list should see some changes in June after The Black Dahlia Murder and August Burns Red release their new albums on the 21st.

Worst album: Winds of Plague - Against the World

I have the new Tyler The Creator and Hate Eternal downloaded, I just haven't checked them out yet. This year has been awesome so far. I only hated the bottom two records (I only listened to the Emmure to write a negative review for my blog) and the three above that are only decent records. Outside of that, everything else I have heard has been at least pretty good. June is looking to be epic for new releases and I am really excited for the rest of the year as a whole.

I definitely haven't heard as many 2011 albums as most of you, but here are some random musings on the few I've given good, hard listens to:

Assaulter - Boundless: A pretty middling album, and not something that would hold anyone's attention for very long. Some sloppy stuff, although there are some promising moments here and there. I figure if you want to listen to this kind of stuff, you'd be better to throw on Destroyer 666.

Burzum - Fallen: I'm not really a black metal guy, but if I was I'd probably like this album. Not bad by any means, but I simply don't have the attention span for it. I need real riffs, solos and vocalists going "Hyeahuh!"

Cavalera Conspiracy - Blunt Force Trauma: I liked this at first, but then I realized it was pretty generic-sounding stuff. Even so, I might wager that this is the best album to come from any member(s) of the classic Sepultura lineup since Chaos AD.

Crowbar - Sever the Wicked Hand: Nice fucking stuff here. Feels a little overlong about 3/4 of the way through but I think that's because of the nature of the music. Good mix of tempos and the trifecta of "Let Me Mourn", "The Cemetery Angels" & "As I Become One" rips my face off every time.

Havok - Time Is Up: As derivative as this is, it would be hard pressed not to make my top 10 for the year. This is solid thrash -- very well done, excellent musicianship and the band draws on all of the old favourites: Metallica, Megadeth, Nuclear Assault, Overkill and most of all Exodus. In fact, this is probably more of an Exodus album than the last three Exodus albums.

Onslaught - The Sound of Violence: If the whole album were as good as the first track, "Born of War", this would be a fucking stellar album. Unfortunately it's not and it comes of sounding as a lost Grip Inc. recording.

The Gates of Slumber - The Wretch: Nice doom. "The Scovrge of Drvnkeness" makes me want to become a degenerate so that I can have an awesome theme song. The vocalist obviously worships at the altar of Wino, which can never ever be bad.

Vreid - V: So far my favourite record of 2011. Massive riffs, excellent grooves and nice, heavy production make this a winner. "The Others and the Look"? Yes, please. Face is melting.

That is a very good point. Nothing beats CD quality....well Vinyl does, but I don't have a Vinyl player. I did that with Ki and Addicted, but for Deconstruction....I couldn't.

Someone compare it to what else he's done though, just for fun, since I am familiar with basically his whole catalogue.

Haven't heard nearly as many albums as I should have by this point. Need to catch up on the stuff I've missed. Barely heard over 10 albums. My quick top 5 for now:

1. Evergrey - Glorious Collision
2. Stratovarius - Elysium
3. Motorhead - The World is Yours
4. Crowbar - Sever The Wicked Hand
5. Isolee - Well Spent Youth/Tyler The Creator - Goblin (tie for my 2 favorite non-metal albums so far, as I can't decide who deserves #5 more).

Juular is one of my favorites too. That song is classic Devy, and Ihsahn is awesome on it. Planet of the Apes is probably my least favorite at the moment, but like someone said the whole album is a grower for sure.

Music wise, it wasn't what I expected at all, and that's probably a good thing. It's not like SYL at all, except for some parts in a couple songs. Especially Poltergeist. Awesome album though. I'm excited for Ghost even more now.

And basically this. But my favorites would probably be Stand, Juular, The Mighty Masturbator and Pandemic maybe. I know it's only going to get better for me too.

The new Gates of Slumber is great too. Alot doomier than Conqueror, which is the only album by them I've heard.

As for 2011 albums, I'm a bit behind. I need to check out: Septicflesh, Primordial, Blood Freak, Hate Eternal, plus Demonaz, which I've heard is great, next week and some other stuff coming up soon like Autopsy and Morbid Angel.

The problem I'm having with new Shining (6-7) is that it seems like they should have been written before 3-5. Like they already mastered their sound but want to change something about it. Their efforts aren't really turning out great, every track on VII just feels like they have covered it all before. All they could really add is boring progressive elements and clean vocals.

3-5 are in a way scary as hell to listen to. There is just so much emotion packed in those album. I've listened to V over 100 times and the thing still is one of the most fucked up thing I've listened to.

tbh I think they should just break up at this rate

the new Autopsy is fucking great though. I'm loving them vocals.

Yeah imho its nearly flawless, I pretty much love every single track. Its slightly tinged with traces of their later punk influnced stuff. The majority of it though is the dommish death metal of their early years. That we all miss so much.:party:

Yeah i've always considered Seether underrated. Seen them live 3 or 4 times. Could have seen them today at DC Chili Cookoff but when I saw they no longer play their best song No Jesus Christ it killed my interest. That song is the perfect set opener for them and even if they played half of it into Gasoline it would be better than skipping it.

I really hope they don't totally go the way of Rise Above This and lose all their heavier fans. Cool song but the setlist with that and Careless Whisper back to back looks really weakstick. I have the new cd but haven't listened to it yet. I'm hoping there's a NJC type song on there that really grabs me.

Really good band and fun live but I have a bad feeling we're going to lose them to the dark side...

I love their cover of careless whisper, although I am rather looking forward to seeing heart shaped box instead of it on friday, seeing as I've seen them do careless whisper twice.

I'm not a big fan of no jesus christ, but it would be kinda neat to have that bass rif lead into gasoline.

Gasoline is a good opener IMO though having seen it twice.

If they keep making albums like this new one I wouldn't be upset, they touched on a little of everything. But they seem to go through fazes, where they write what they feel, so maybe sean's life will suck again and he'll be angry and write another angry album next. Either way I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Finally have some time on my hands, so I've been catching up on some albums.

Pagan's Mind - Heavenly Ecstasy: Right now, definitely my #1, but Primordial is a very close 2. This album is everything that's great about PM.

Amorphis - The Beginning of Times: They continue the streak now to four consecutively incredible albums. Maybe not as good as Skyforger, but a great album nonetheless.

Amaranthe - Amaranthe: From the Mercenary and Raintime school of Melodic Death/Power Metal, with a bit more emphasis on the Power than the Melodeath aspects. A solid album, nothing particularly groundbreaking. Fans of either genre should probably enjoy this one, though.

Stratovarius - Elysium: Didn't really like this one too much. They've done much better in the past. Maybe it'll grow on me, but I didn't think this was really anything special.

Yeah it's pretty damn horrible. Blades for Baal and Beauty Meets Beast ended up being pretty bland to me. Surprisingly I Am Morbid actually sounds pretty decent, and I like 10 More Dead (except the vocals suck on that one).

All the techno / industrial tracks are as advertised.

All of the lyrics and most of the vocals are terrible. Some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard. Nevermore's the only song that even comes close to having decent lyrics.

This might be the biggest disappointment ever for me personally.

Hell yeah, MPF! Fair to Midland is awesome live, I was caught really unexpected at how much I enjoyed their show earlier this year. :allan:

To most, Fair To Midland is that band who did a song about a Manatee a few years ago. To those who care about good music, they divulge and discover how good Fair To Midland really is.

I defy anyone to see FTM live and now become an instant fan.

They are coming back here at the end of July for their CD release show. I can't wait! My 3rd time seeing them live.

Can you review the album "Bad Time Zoo" by the rapper Sims ? It's my favorite hip-hop album released this year but it gets no exposure. Everyone I show it to loves it!

The new Atmosphere was pretty good.

Holy crap...it has a 1.30 on rateyourmusic :lol::lol: St. Anger and The Unspoken King have a higher rating :lol: Ah, well let's see the rating it gets once the album is officially released...I bet a bunch of people who rated it haven't even heard it yet, to be honest.

Eh, it's still better than both of those (by a lot). I wasn't anticipating either of those albums nearly as much as the new Morbid Angel though so it was a way bigger disappointment.

After listening to I Am Morbid a little more I actually like that song (aside from the lyrics). If Trey would've composed more rock-ish songs like that for the experimental material instead of the techno/industrial stuff the album would've been a little better.

Did this halfway-through-the-year update for the Facebook after hearing 50 albums so far, Mike, you might wanna take a few notes:

1. Protest the Hero - Scurrilous (Vagrant)

Canadian prog metal with lots of notes and lots of singing, like very good tech death without the death.

2. Altar of Plagues - Mammal (Profound Lore)

Irish epic black metal obsessed with despair and willing to include any element that might help the vibe.

3. Burzum - Fallen (Byelobog)

Norwegian black metal that grandfathered it all and something of a return to form for its artist.

4. Anaal Nathrakh - Passion (Candlelight)

English black metal/grind/industrial that is heavy enough to terrify but still gorgeous.

5. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues (Sub Pop)

American folk music that dips its toes in a few other styles.

6. Evergrey - Glorious Collision (SPV)

Swedish melodic prog metal that is always beautiful and occasionally even heavy.

7. Woods of Desolation - Torn Beyond Reason (Northern Silence)

Australian black metal owing its debts to Wolves in the Throne Room and Alcest equally.

8. Fucked Up - David Comes to Life (Matador)

Canadian hardcore punk/post-punk rock opera dripping with melody and meaning.

9. Death Grips - Exmilitary (self-released)

American indie hip hop that cares as much about loops, samples, and beats as lyrics and vocals.

10. Subrosa - No Help for the Mighty Ones (Profound Lore)

American female-fronted (and backed) doom with violin, feedback, distortion and riffs upon riffs.

Yeah, me too. Mandrake's the reason I can't help but be interested. It was one of my first, and my favorite, Power Metal albums, and even if every Edguy album from here on out is absolutely terrible, I'll probably keep checking them out due to that. I can't give up hope - they have it in them to put out good albums, damn it. As much as I would like a return to form with them putting out quality Power Metal, I would settle for a Hard Rock album in the vein of the last two if it was actually good.

I liked the Dear Hunter a lot live but wouldn't know where to begin to listen to their studio stuff. Assistance?

Well right now there is two sides to The Dear Hunter.

1.) The Big Epic Story

Their 3 previous albums are Act I, Act II and Act III, with Act IV coming out 2012. It is a one giant story being covered over several albums. If you go this route, start with Act I and continue forward. There is a lot of Symphonicly orchestrated songs, Heavy songs, great ballads. It runs the gambit pretty well in one pretty cool story.

2.) The Color Spectrum

This literally got released at Midnight eastern, so I have yet to check the whole thing out. Sadly CD wise there is just a compilation for one CD that covers all 9 EPs, otherwise it is only available to buy as MP3s or the one of the 100 copies of Vinyl boxset. I bought the compilation before And it covers a lot of different genres from Hard Rock to Electronica to Country to Surf Pop, basically 9 different genres (4 songs on each EP, 36 songs all together). I would check out the compilation first, and if you if anything on the compilation, check out that EP it goes with (it should be color coordinated.) Or just download the whole boxset.

I will be checking out the full collection tomorrow, when it is 4am here. and for anyone interested I'll report on my thoughts.

I love these guys

Multi-album suites telling a single story, eh? Makes a lot of sense that I saw them with Coheed, then.

Apparently they used to be A Static Lullaby from what I heard. I dig it

I'm sure I'm the only fan here (I'd love to be proven wrong) but The Dear Hunter: The Color Spectrum just became available.

All 9 EPs!

Hm. I'm guessing I should go see them live in a small venue for like 15$?
I'm pretty sure there will be less than 200 people at that show.

I'm going to try to catch the tour here in July. I haven't seen them live yet, but I'm sure it will be a great show. And for $15 bucks, why not? T shirts cost more then that.

any of you guys heard of Space Bong? Silly name, I know, but their new record is fantastic, seriously good stoner-doom. Last.fm lists Cough, Weedeater, Dopethrone, and Iron Monkey as similar artists.

I've decided to start keeping a list of every album I listen to this year to make list making easier. I'm going to do a half year top 10 when I hear Ghost and Deconstruction on Tuesday. To date I've heard 25 albums released this year.

My Excel document for 2011 is at an interesting place. 100 albums I know I need to hear: 50 listened to; 50 not. When I get back to the States I'm just gonna start knocking them out one at a time. Wonder how radically different my top 10 will look afterward.

Geez, 100 albums. I've only heard 30 so far - 20 of which I very strongly enjoy. Definitely prefer this year to last year, but coming up with a top 10 is going to be quite difficult at the end of the year. :(

Though there still are about 8 currently released albums that I have not heard that I really want to....oh man.

What it's like for me so far:

Hate Eternal- Phoenix Amongst the Ashes
Obscura- Omnivium
Scale the Summit- The Collective
Human Abstract- Digital Veil
Arch Enemy- Khaos Legion
Wormrot- Dirge
Black Dahlia Murder- Ritual
Origin- Entity
Septic Flesh- The Great Mass
Amon Amarth- Surtur Rising
Last Chance to Reason- Level 2

The new Hate Eternal is just leaps and bounds better than everything I've heard so far. I still need to check out the new Krallice, Anaal Nathrakh, Sylosis, Alestorm, Autopsy, and Trap Them. Fuck; there's just too many good albums this year!

This year thus far has been so incredibly inferior to 2010 for me, but then again, hey - I've noticed by now that however this board feels is the exact opposite for me.

Just downloaded the latest Protest the Hero, will check it out tomorrow.

Listening to Deconstruction - fucking awesome! The Mighty Masturbator, Sumeria, and Planet of the Apes are the best tracks I've heard from Townsend.

This year has been pretty below average to me. I mean I've found a lot of great albums this year, but I've found just as many shitty albums and disappointments from some of my favorite bands.

2010 was much better so far.

You haven't listened to the new Trap Them yet?:eek: get on that NOW!!!

My favorite record this year by far. And it's even better than their previous record, Seizures.

I have a pretty broad taste, thank you very much ;)

But anyways lately I just haven't cared as much to dig up as much new stuff as I can just so I can make a list out of it

But I'm trying to catch up. I've actually heard like 17 albums but I need to check out the following: Hate Eternal, Necrophagia, Wino, Anaal Nathrakh, and a couple others I can't think of right now.

My favorites right now would probably be Enslaved, Devin Townsend, Burzum, Septicflesh, Autopsy, Weedeater, Pentagram, and Blood Ceremony.

People who have somewhat of an idea of what stuff I like, lemme know what I need to check out please!

New Trap Them is pretty tits! I really like it. I wonder where its gonna fit in with the rest of the albums; I need to re-listen to everything.

New Anaal Nathrakh is awesome also, but the new Krallice... fuck me, these guys are near perfect. I'm going through it for the first time as I type this. Really, really hope they can tour by me sometime.

Well, apparently Annotations of an Autopsy is putting out a new EP this year. And they've reverted back to deathcore... but it's not like they were good at writing death metal anyway.
