How are those bands obscure? When I think obscure I think of bands that's albums aren't even sold in indie record stores. I've seen Nevermore and Avantasia cd's on the shelves at Best Buy.

When I think of obscure, I think of bands that no one in my city would know. Talk to most metal heads in Buffalo you wont find many that know of Nevermore, Avantasia,My dying Bride and Evergrey. Maybe it's just Buffalo

Yeah Nevermore is so popular. When I see them in April they're gonna be playing this little dive place that fits about 300 people. They're really filling them venues up aren't they:D

Nevermore is known to the diehard metal fans like us but to the rest of the metal fans out there, not at all. I've had plenty of conversations with metal fans who know their stuff and when I mention Nevermore more often then not the answer comes back "who?". Their albums hardly chart in the US and when they do it's usually low and it falls out of the top 200 the next week.

In a country of 320 million people where your albums only sell maybe 40 to 50 thousand copies each, that's obscure if you ask me. Nevermore was even less known before 2005. Getting on the Gigantour that summer was huge for them and it got them exposure they never had before and gave them the biggest popularity boost of their career.

Avantasia is even more obscure than that. Their albums don't appear on the charts here and they don't tour the US so that doesn't raise their profile at all. Just because the albums are on the shelves at best buy doesn't mean everyone is buying them.

1) By those sales figures as logic, most pop artists these days are "obscure". According to sales records, only 3 albums in the entire world went platinum in America last year. 50,000 copies of an album for a metal band who isn't "mainstream" is pretty damn solid.

2) Avantasia headlined festivals worldwide in 2008 and 2010, including selling out many smaller shows worldwide. They are definitely relatively obscure in America, but in the picture of the Metal Community worldwide, they are most certainly not. They're headlining Wacken next year, as they did in 2008.

Guess things are different in Buffalo.
Alot of metal bands like Avantasia and Nevermore are well known in places like Europe so I'm no surprised Avantasia is headlining Wacken.

Different in Buffalo compared to where? Europe? Well, obviously.

From what you and a few others say on here it seems like Avantasia and Nevermore are a little more well known in other places in the U.S.

Well, I mean they're not exactly "hip" or really popular, but in the scope of what is out there, I wouldn't really consider either of them to be THAT truly obscure. Most of my metal friends listen to them, or at the very least know who they are. Sure, Avantasia are a fraction of as popular here as they are in most other places, and it's hard to get an exact feeling for how popular they are here, since they don't tour. But that being said, I'm pretty much confident that if there was a dozen or 15-city Avantasia US tour, playing ~1,000-capacity venues, the shows would be full. And yes, I realize that in the grand scheme of MUSIC, that is still obscure, but in the grand scheme of metal, I wouldn't consider it that way, considering the large number of bands I listen to that wouldn't draw 70 people in most cities.
