EDIT: The show was January 13th 2011. Forgot to add that. Hopefully a mod can fix that :hecho:

Great show. Let me start off by saying that this isn't much of a review but more of a quick little Rant on how the show went down. I wouldn't be able to put out a very good review like most of the other people on here, so I'm just going to make a little quickie(Probably not a quickie, but whatever).

LET THE RANT BEGIN:rocker:

Anyways. So I was suppose to meet up with a bunch of friend before heading to the show. I should also note that all of my friends came just to see ANGRA....AND ONLY ANGRA. They are all die-hard Power metal fans. They could careless for Sepultura. It was around 7:30ish, I got a call from them saying that they would be chilling for awhile at another one of our friends pads. They wanted to drink a bunch of alcohol and get warmed up before heading to the show. I told them 100 times it was just going to be only 2 bands at this show, BUT nope, I just got a little response that went something to the extent of "NAH MAN THERE'S GOING TO BE LIKE 4-5 OPENING BANDS. IT ALWAYS WORKS LIKE THAT. WERE GONNA SHOW UP AROUND 9. CRUISE OVER AND LETS MEET UP". I didn't want to risk it so I ended up going solo and driving to the house of blues by myself and they would just meet up with me at the show, in the venue. I got to the House of blues at around 7:50ish. Got inside the Venue by 8pm. BOOM, Got my spot on the front rail.....and at 8:01 the lights went off and out came ANGRA......talk about easy as pie?

I've never been a fan of Angra or power metal but I will admit...they totally blew me away. They sounded Unbelievable!! I didn't know any of the songs they were playing but It still didn't stop me from jumping up and down and going crazy during their set. Eduardo Falaschi voice is just simply...BEAUTIFUL. Kiko Loureiro and the rest of the band sounded spot on and they really seemed to be loving the crowed response. You could tell there was alot of angra fans at this show. They were practically eating off the palm of the bands hand........Did I ever mention that all my friends were still no where to be seen or found? I wanted to race back to my car and get my cell to call them and let them know that the band they have all waited ages for to see... is now rocking on stage. I left my phone in my car and the security wouldn't allow me to leave because this was one of those venues were there's no "Ins and outs". Angra played exactly for one hour and 5 minutes. Pretty long for a "opening band" but its totally justifiable for a band like Angra. I don't even know anything about them but after this show I left a believer and I plan on getting all their albums....Angra was godly...nuff said..

Right after Angra finished their set and left the stage....and I literally mean like 10 seconds after they leave the stage......ALL MY FRIENDS SHOW UP RIGHT THEN AND THERE. They were all so pumped, amped and ready to go crazy when Angra came on. I thought this was some kind of sick joke. When I broke the News to them it was priceless. The looks on their faces could tell you easily how heartbroken and devastated they were. At one point one of my friends(Who is a die hard Angra fan) grabs on to my shirt and starts screaming into my face "DUDE?!?! DUDE?!?! ARE YOU FUCKING WITH ME?!?! ARE YOU FUCKING WITH ME!! NO!?!?! YOU'RE FUCKING WITH Me?!?!?!?". After less then a minute from hearing the brutal news... all of my friends bolted out of the House of Blues in dismay, and that was it....they were all gone like that.. They all got their tickets for this show way back in the summer only to miss there all time favorite band. Talk about depressing

After about an hour of lagging, Sepultura finally took the stage at exactly 9:45 and rocked the house till 11:30. I think what made this show even more "special" was the fact that all the people that were at this gig STILL supported the current formation of the band and backed the band up 100%. I met all kinds of fans that still loved the current line-up and could care less if the Cavaleras were in the band or not....I thought that was great and showed how much the fans still love and support Sep after all these years through struggles, and trials and tribulations. After Max's departure the band had to start from scratch again so they have gone through a lot of shit to get were they are now(which REALLY isnt saying much I guess... but Like I said....they still got there legions of supporters like myself and the crowed last night was a great example.).:rocker:....
After the first 2 songs they played, I ended up ditching the front Rail and went into the pit to mosh for the rest of the night, headbanging and thrashing my ass off until the lights went on and the show was over. You could tell the fans even loved the New stuff they played because the pits were getting FUCKING BRUTAL especially during "WHAT I DO?". I ended up spraying my ankle in the pits during the performance of the new song off their upcoming album but it didn't stop me from thrashing out in the pit for the rest of the night.:rocker:

The Band Sounded AMAZING!!! AMAZZZZZZING!!!! As sad as it is that Igor is gone and out of Sep, Jean Dolabella is fitting in pretty well as the new drummer for the band. He definitely stood out during songs like "Innerself" and "Territory" while hitting every beat precisely just like Igor did, especially during "Territory". Paulo Jr?....Well, what is there to say about this man? HE'S NO FUCKING BASS GOD LIKE Steve DiGiorgio! I guess all i can say is that it was nice to hear his bass loud and audible(he may have sucked on the bass back then but atleast he doesn't fake playing the guitar these days like Max Cavalera....In fact Its a pretty known fact that Max Cavalera fucking sucks balls at playing guitar now, and always has his guitar super low to non-existent in the mix). Derrick Green really braught his A-game to the table. He sounded so fucking Brutal during the A-Lex tunes while at the same time bringing out the aggression and power during the Older Tunes like "Innerself" and "Meaningless Movements". Lets not forget the loud crushing riffs that were coming out of the guitar of mr Kisser...speaking of which... The highlight of the night for me was the man himself..... Mr. Andreas Kisser. One of the main reasons I still love Sepultura and back them up 100% is because of the man, alone. He could have easily gave up and stopped once max left but NO...he kept the band moving on and not letting anyone give them a bit of doubt. SURE THEY DIDN'T come out with another masterpiece like "Beneath the Remains" or "Arise" But honestly look at Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy(THEY ARE BOTH SHIT). Point is....To most of ya'll this is nothing more then a fake sleazy cover band but I dare anyone to go see them in concert and then open there mouths up again(THEY SOUNDED AMAZING LAST NIGHT.)...They may have lost some of their more important members but they are still going strong as ever. Sepultura(in my opinion) is in the same EXACT situation as bands like Alice in Chain, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Exodus ect......But NONE OF THOSE BANDS GET THE AMOUNT OF SHIT sepultura gets... As Long as Seps got Kisser...THAT IS FINE BY ME(Just like if jerry cantrel is in Alice in Chains its fine with the AIC fans even though the original singer is dead):rocker:

The biggest disappointment for me at the show was the fact that they kept ignoring my request to play "Biotech is Godzilla". I must have screamed that song out loud like 800 times. It was IMPOSSIBLE for them not to hear me!...Especially considering how incredibly small the house of blues in Anaheim is! AT ONE POINT Derrick even asked the audience for a "Chaos A.D fan request". FAN REQUEST MY ASS. They ended up playing Amen(I doubt it was fan request but more like IT'S PART OF THE SET)

After the show was over I was too dead and drained out to go meet up with my friends so I just went back to my place....Not too mention my ankle got sprayed like a mother fucker....goddamn its like the size of a basketball!!....There's my 2 cents

Nice set. Policia live must have been ridiculous!! Regarding your friends, that sucks ass. That's why I never take chances on bands I want to see. I'll show up really early if I have to just to make sure, I don't care. I'll sit through shitty band upon shitty band, I don't care. Live and learn I guess

I totally agree. 100% with you. I can't imagine how bummed out they are. They have been waiting to see Angra....I want to say a decade?.....

Your friends should of listend to you, but I can understand why they thought there were going to be 4 or 5 opening bands. Because there are always four or five opening bands at a show and most of the time they suck and are a waste of time.

EXACTLY. Thats why I didn't meet up with my friends. We were all suppose to meet up and chill before heading to the show but they wanted to chill and get drunk, smoke, and that was just a NO CAN DO FOR ME. I have been waiting to see Sepultura(OLD FORMATION OR NEW)for a really long time. I had my mind 100% set on getting to the show as soon as the doors open and I wasn't going to let anything get in my way. HENCE which is why I decided to bust a solo mission and just go to the house of blues by myself.

Great review; as said before your friends are idiots; I'm sure it was worth whatever the tickets cost to get to the show, find out that their band just played, scream at you and leave

money well spent right?

I can see the next American Express spot (not correct figures, I don't know how much tix cost)

-tickets to show: $25
-gas money: $40
-Booze, weed, etc.: $55
-to show up for a band you've been waiting for forever only to find out you missed because you were stoned: FUCKING PRICELESS

smoking may have played a role but the HUGE reason why they missed out was because they were all at one of our friends house getting hammered. I don't see what the point on getting wasted to see a concert is? Last time I got "Wasted" for a show was Metallica in 2008 in San Diego. I have never drinkin' at or before a concert since then......Its a waste of time, plus I love going to concerts in a sober state of mind. I feel like i get 1000000 x more energy then if I were to be shitfaced. Meh there loss.

I do feel like pointing out once again that ANGRA FUCKING OWNED :rocker:

What about Warbringer? I think they played before Angra. If I am going to see a show for one band I get there one hour before doors so I don't feel like a king size douche afterward. I am sorry to hammer on your friends, but Angra doesn't tour the states every year.

I have seen Sepultura twice with the current line-up. I think they sound good and I liked both shows, but going from two guitars to one is tough live.

Warbringer did not play at last nights show. It was just Angra and Sepultura. As for "Being tough live"? Say what you will, We can agree to disagree but the loss of a Rhythm guitarist didn't bug me that much. Hell, Napalm Death don't have a lead guitarist anymore and they still sound phenomenal live. Plenty of 3 Piece bands out there that still kick ass(SADUS, Destruction, Venom ect). Also I don't think Max could even play the rhythm parts anymore(Some say he's lost whatever skillz he had on the guitar and is totally non-existent to the playing now)

Yeah, because when I think of Napalm Death, I think of those beautifully written solos.

Max may "fake" playing guitar, but it's better than masquerading as a legendary thrash band.

That wasn't my point. My point was they went from having 2 guitarist to 1 and they still sound great.

that sure is a fucking great set, and I can totally understand why such a big Sep lover like you Sep69 would go see this, it's a bit like a die hard Maiden fan like me going to see Paul Di'Anno, the songs are so great that you are guaranteed a great time.

But I can only imagine what a reunion tour would be. That would be fucking mind blowing. But still, I'M sure it was amazing like you said !

Cheers !

damn there are a LOT of old songs in that set...

okay Sep, here are my questions for you:
-Compare Sepultura playing old songs vs. Soulfly playing old songs. During which band did they sound better?
-is it even worth it going just to see old songs being played?

and yeah, I don't even know your friends, but I want to kill them for being so goddamn stupid

SEPULTURA totally ANNIHILATES Soulfly in performance. I saw Soulfly in November last year and they were good no doubt about it but Sepultura was fucking amazing. Like I said before....I'm not trying to kiss the bands ass all I simply ask is you guys go to one of the shows during their upcoming tour and then come and tell me if you thought they sucked or not?(I think DethMaiden has seen them aswell and could probably vouch for me on this one :hecho: )

-is it even worth it going just to see old songs being played?

I really love their last two releases and after going to these last two shows(I just got back from the Hollywood show)I'm glad to know I am not the only one that really loves the new stuff. The pits really got intense and brutal during songs like the "The Treatment" and "WHAT I DO?" and everyone was singing the lyrics word for word, it was awesome!. The brand new song they played off the upcoming album also sounded really great(apparently Roy Z was at the show tonight, checking out the bands performance since hes producing the upcoming record). But to answer your question, yes it's definitely worth checking out the old stuff....Especially when they are playing the majority of the albums written and played by Andreas Kisser:rocker:

Meaningless Movements was the highlight for me just because it was so damn unexpected and really never thought of it being on the set. :blaze:

I should elaborate that going from two guitars to one is different from only having one guitar. Some depth is lost but it seems some of the arrangements sound different. If a band has played with one guitar the music is written for that guitar not for two. No big deal it's just an observation. I saw Max last year and thought he sounded fine. I may go see Seps in April. If I am correct they are playing all of Arise. That would be super!!

Cool review. I think the wordsmith's on the board might have set a new record by not speaking up yet. I'm glad to see it actually. I'd rather read a cool review with typo's than just see a setlist anyday.

Cool setlist but I think I would have rather heard all of Arise like the last setlist I saw. Definitely some cool song choices though. Can't remember the last time I saw them play Septic Schizo so I would definitely go see this show.

As much as I respect Andres Kisser I've read a bunch of bad shit about him. Didn't Igor quit because of him? I heard Max wanted to reunite and Andres blocked it so Igor quit. That's really Axl-ish of Andres if it's true. I know it was a few years ago and I never followed up to see if that was true but I haven't heard anything since. Funny how Andres wasn't even an original member but they get to keep the name. I wonder with Igor gone if he and Max could get the name back since they're 2/3rds of the original lineup?

And lastly I kinda agree with Logan. I've only seen the new Sep lineup on dvd but Soulfly playing Sep songs live is incredible. Also if I were to make a cd of the best Soulfly songs vs. the best new-Sep songs I'm almost positive I'd like the Soulfly cd much better. Bloodbath & Beyond off the new cd is a great song and better than anything I heard an A-lex. I do like Moloko Mesto & The Treatment though

If playing fast = better performance for you, fine. But I guarantee if you show someone who doesn't know about Sepultura an old Sep performance and then a new Soulfly performance of the same song, they would think it's the same band.

He might be a total fanboy, but he's right - at least as far as I'm concerned. I've seen Soulfly play old Sep songs and the "new" Sep (albeit with Igor still in the band) totally killed the Soulfly performance when I saw them.

I heard in a Max interview that Andreas was cool with it but Paulo was the one who didn't want to do it. Which dosn't really make sense to me. Isn't Paulo the guy who sat back and let his band members record his parts for him? I wouldn't give a shit if the did a reunion without that guy.

If that's true then I couldn't agree more. He was always the weak link and is by far the most replaceable.

This story you are talking about was back in 2006.

Igor didn't quit because of Andreas. He actually left on VERY good terms(unlike his brother). He first left in 2006 during a tour because he just got a kid with his 2nd wife, and then finally decided to leave the band to start his own DJ/Hiphop techno group known as MIXHELL which is a hip hop DJ duo that consists of Igor and his wife. They left on very good times, no bad blood at all. Igor is just sick of the whole metal thing(He said the only reason he would do a reunion is for his Brother...so you can tell he's OVER sepultura and just metal in general......ESPECIALLY when he's doing songs with VIOLENT JAY from Insane Clown Posse :().

And lastly I kinda agree with Logan. I've only seen the new Sep lineup on dvd but Soulfly playing Sep songs live is incredible. I hope you're not talkin about that DVD "LIVE in Sao Paolo" in 2005(that was a horrible performance, and that was back when Derrick still couldn't sing worth diddly squat).

Now here comes the part where we dissagree. I HATE soulfly. I really do.....I tried so hard to get into them back in the days like early 2000's. Just didn't click on me(AND I LISTENED TO EVERY ALBUM....Even the ones that are hailed as "brutal and very thrashy"....Just didn't click on me)

Even a week before I went to see Soulfly I tried getting into their material before the show so I can get a good idea of the songs...But I just hated them(I thought seeing people go crazy during a song like "JUMPDAFUCKUP" was just silly and childesh...I felt like I was in some KORN video) :hecho:
not to mention Max's guitar was totally mute through out most of the performance..

But I won't lie, Max still sounds fucking Godly when it comes to the Sep tunes(especially when he busted out Troops of Doom!)

I heard in a Max interview that Andreas was cool with it but Paulo was the one who didn't want to do it. Which dosn't really make sense to me. Isn't Paulo the guy who sat back and let his band members record his parts for him? I wouldn't give a shit if the did a reunion without that guy.

Sep actually made a video posted online stating that there is no reunion and that they have not had any communication or talk with Max for years and years. You guys do realize that Max Cavalera is notorious for being one of Metals biggest shit talkers right?....is this really new to you guys? Has anyone even been reading the current story on the Bobby Burns/Max Cavalera Shenanigans(pretty interesting read.....which is starting to really worry me on max's credibility)

That is a great set, and its good to Sepultura acknowledging every part of their careers in their setlists. Its a tough topic, the Sepultura vs. Cavaleras debate but I will say that with Sepultura playing these sort of setlists, it definitely ups their credibility. Soulfly definitely are not offering as good a live performance these days in terms of setlist, and Cavalera Conspiracy live, setlist wise, is essentially a Sepultura greatest hits. So with this kind of setlist, Sepultura are definitely the winners in terms of live output.

The only bad thing is that I think the setlist on their upcoming tour won't be nearly as long as this one *won't have nearly as many old songs*.
First of all, this was more of an "exclusive" show than anything, so it obviously had an extra-long set
Second, there's six bands on their upcoming tour so naturally they will have to shorten their set. :bouville:

That's interesting that you mention that because Derrick stated right off the bat that they would be playing songs off their entire Discography(He said this right after the 2nd song was finished). :rocker:

I have said this many times and I'll say it again. Everyone can talk as much shit as they want about the current line up of Sep....call me a dick suckin fanboy, whatever you want.....but all I SIMPLY ASK is this AND ONLY THIS

Go to the upcoming tour(they are playing all over america in 2 months)...Check them out and THEN TELL ME IF THEY STILL SUCK AND ARE A COVER BAND....speaking of which....if this band is a "cover" band....then this was without a doubt one of the best cover band concerts I have been too....In fact I have never heard such an amazing cover band in my life...probably the best cover band in existence. For a cover band they sounded incredible.... :hecho:

They're playing Graspop, I am definitely seeing them at that, really looking for to it judging from this setlist! I mean I am definitely on the side that believes its not the real Sepultura, however, I would say these guys are closer to emulating the intensity of REAL Sepultura, then Cavalera Conspiracy or Soulfly.

Let me just say simply this and only this...

I think when you watch Concerts on youtube(especially ones you didn't go to)..I think it just won't do it any justice unless you're there :hmm:

Heres a quick example

I saw Rage Against The Machine In 2007. It was easily one of the most brutal shows I have ever been to.....DARE I SAY IT?.....It was more brutal then all the times I saw Slayer....YEAH I SAID IT....I still will never forget that Massacre that went down at the Glen Hellen Pavellion in 2007 during Rages performance.....Brutal, fucking brutal......anyways.....a couple weeks later I show my friends on youtube some footage from the concert and they didn't think it was all that great and thought I was over hyping it....BUT THAT'S BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT THERE...I'm probably the worst typer/speller/person when it comes to explaining things next to indestructible on this board, but try and understand what I'm trying to get at...

Ever heard the saying "you had to of been there to truly understand and feel what was going on"?....well that is a good example

My point is... whether the videos you watched are good, bad or misleading....you should just do yourself a favor and get a ticket and go to one of the upcoming shows and see for yourself...THEN YOU BE THE ONE TO JUDGE.

I just saw Sepultura twice in two days and I thought they sounded INCREDIBLE both nights and I plan on seeing them in San Diego this coming May:rocker:

however, I would say these guys are closer to emulating the intensity of REAL Sepultura, then Cavalera Conspiracy or Soulfly.

EXACTLY. I think max still has a great voice but Sepultura can still play the Sep tunes 10000000000 times better then Soulfly playing Sep tunes(and I'm not saying this cause I'm some fanboy. El Gordo saw them aswell and could probably vouch for me on this one). I thought Refuse/Resist by Sepultura sounded(The guitars at least, not vocals) WAY MORE BRUTAL then Soulflys cover. Soulfys cover had a "JUMP UP AND DOWN AND HAVE SOME FUN" vibe to it which I didn't like....I thought there was a huge difference between the covers played by Soulfly and Sep....and Sep definitely comes out the winner

Also Sepultura still plays full songs unlike Soulfly which play half assed medleys.:hmm:

Except don't they make medleys out of Arise & Dead Embryonic Cells as well as Beneath The Remains & Inner Self?

Nope. They just do a medley of Arise and D.E.C, and that's pretty much it.

Wow, that really sucks with your friends. But if I bought tickets to a show in advance and I REALLY want to see a particular band I'd be on time regardless of the whole "Oh yeah 4-5 opening bands blah blah" because I've been to shows where there are no local supporters, and only the bands advertised performed (ie. Blind Guardian & Leaves Eyes in 2006, Helloween & Gamma Ray (LA show) in 08, "Black Tyranny" 2008). I wouldn't take a chance on it, I'd show up on time =)
