Man, I loved the Final Frontier (less than five other albums this year, granted, including two on this list) but I was really hoping we'd break out of our IMBB-birthed shell and vote someone else #1. Oh well, I had 3 of mine on the list and enjoy or at least respect the rest.

6 of my top 10. I'm honestly a little surprised Deftones is part of it. I guess I should listen to the albums on this list I don't have, which is only 3.

Here's 11-20:

Watain
The Sword
Intronaut
Ihsahn
Avantasia
Atheist
Fear Factory
Dillinger Escape Plan
Ludicra
Immolation

DethMaiden

Three more of my top 10 in that group. Ludicra at #19 is definitely the lowest my #1 has ever been in one of these since I did my first list in 2004 over at the IMBB.

Great list, only 1 major stinker. I gotta admit, I thought BG was gonna be number 1 this year but good for Maiden. Maybe I need to check out that Alcest record.

Gotta be honest, I'm upset to see the BG record second instead of first. It was a much better Blind Guardian record than The Final Frontier was a Maiden record.

I was right. 11-20 are every bit as good as 1-10. A great Top 20 overall.

This. Since iv become a poster, theres gradally become alot less division in general opinion on this board. As it stands, that top twenty could've been predicted abot 4/5 months ago simply becase of how unified it has become.

Solid list 2 of my top 10, personally I think 11-20 is far,far better than the top 10. That being said, I'm stoked High On Fire,Deftones and Overkill made the top 10. It's still a fine list, thanks to manks for running this whole thing.

Two of my top ten are in the top ten, and two more are in the 11-20 range. Not bad. I can relate to Brad's comment about Ludicra (his #1, my #2) being so low, but not everyone on here has the correct taste in music so I'm not surprised. :dorky:

I'm just happy my #1 (High on Fire) did as well as it did this year. I know there are a few HoF haters on here (although I'm honestly not sure why).

This is the first year I can remember for a long time where my top ten didn't contain at least one non-metal album.

Although I've never had something as diverse as rap or dance or anything in mine. If it's not metal it's more than likely acoustic or blues or something. Last year I had The Black Crowes at #2, for instance.

Oh, and yay for IntrOnaut! It's about time they got some love on here.

Likewise for Triptykon (although that's not really surprising), Watain, The Sword, Atheist and Immolation (although Aeon's latest album was better ;)).

Some of you guys are really missing out on some dandies, though - for example, The Ocean, Lair of the Minotaur and Kvelertak. Especially for those last two - I don't see how a metal fan could not like those albums on some level...they are just so damned awesome (and fun!).

...and too bad for Kylesa. Their new album doesn't hit the bullseye as directly as Static Tensions did, but it really is a grower and worthy of some big love. I think they'll get snubbed a ton this year - not just on here but by critics in general - because people's expectations got all jacked up due to Static Tensions.

...and BTW, if you liked Watain, you may also want to check out Lightning Swords of Death. If you liked The Sword, you should definitely check out Karma to Burn. If you liked Atheist, the new Decrepit Birth is quite good as well. Finally, if you liked Immolation...well, you already know what you need to do there. ;)

I was quite excited to see Intronaut make the top 20 as well, Valley Of Smoke is one hell of a record, Likewise with The Sword. The record that made the top 20 that excited me the most was Dillinger Escape Plan, that was my number 1 and I really didn't expect them to make the top 20.

Seeing this list makes me realize that I am sort of an outsider here, in that I'm not an Iron Maiden fanatic.

Maiden won this year for the same reason Slayer got 2nd last year. That's it, really.

This board is a fuckton less divided than it used to be. It's starting to be more of a centralized group of people with a few outliers, rather than just a whole bunch of cliques.

Well said. I just think there is less hating overall and people respect each others opinions even if they don't always agree.

I'll admit I enjoy a healthy debate every now and have never bagged on a band I didn't at least give a few listens to. Bands like Ludicra, The Ocean & Alcest came so highly recommended from so many people that I was sure I'd like them. They just didn't click for me. On the other hand bands like Bison BC, Black Breath, Hellish Crossfire & Aeon were barely mentioned or recommended to me and blew me away.

Some bands just made such bad 1st impressions on me that I didn't give them a fair chance. Had the song Alley Cat not been my 1st exposure to Seventh Wonder I probably would have liked that cd much more. I'm trying to judge cd's as a work of art and 1 terrible song is worse than 2 average filler songs to me.

I tried to talk myself out of voting for Bison BC because I knew they had no shot but the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. Funny how that happens.

I'm still surprised a band like Sodom who is worshipped in the metal community can put out their best cd since M16 and no one notice. Sodom cd's have always been impossible to find in America though...

I didn't expect anything, most of you people have music tastes I can't stand. That fact is just reinforced when I go here and see the Deftones on the top ten list and Nevermore and Ludicra present while some of the best albums of the last 10 years don't even show up.

hahahah too funny. That does help explain why no one has heard it. Actually when I got it off ebay back in November there were 30+ copies on there. I got the digipak with the live show for $17.99. When I saw that setlist of the live dvd I had to have it. One Step Over the Line is great live and since I wore out Mortal Way of Live to death back in the day I wanted to hear updated versions of Christ Passion and the other gems. The production on the new dvd smokes the older version but I still enjoy both.

As far as the cd goes Hellfire is my favorite Sodom song since Napalm in the Morning. It sounds like it could be on Tapping the Vein to me. My buddy thought it was Slayer when he 1st heard it. Tom does have an Araya-ish delivery on several tracks including Hellfire. Other songs like Storm raging Up and Knarrenheinz seem like they would be incredible live. Man I wish I got to see these guys last year.

Yeah I just love the thrash stuff on there. Some of the slower songs like The Art of Killing Poetry are cool too but I haven't really liked a Sodom cd in so long that I might have been kinda fanboy-ish on it.

As far as the list if you said I'd think Deftones would write and record the best cd of 2010 I would have laughed in your face. I haven't been a fan in years even though I think the song Passenger with Maynard is incredible and as good as many Tool songs, I've been going heavier in my tastes. I know many people on here bash Deftones and have never even heard the cd and if that makes them more metal then good for them.

I don't remember your list but I think you were the only person with Funerot who I think are great. I like anything fast and thrashy and they have a cool punk edge than brings back memories of Mentors and Venom. They would have been in my Top 35 for sure.

Well that doesn't make any sense.
I dislike Ludicra and the Deftones for different reasons, if I had to compare them Ludicra are musically superior to the Deftones, but its not that easy, and as far as annoying me Ludicra definitely take the cake. Edit
My 2010 in metal
by Diana Chavdarova on Monday, 17 January 2011 at 21:41

2010 could not but have been dominated by Triptykon, who dare to embody the very core of the genre: severe, bare-nerved, heart-torn emotion, which likely leaves the artist devastated. A sacrifice of life in the name of art that, paradoxically, aims directly at the deepest roots of life. And delivers - hence the fascination of the metal world with Eparistera Daimones. It is a record of addiction. It growls the lure of sticky darkness, the darkest depths of human psyche which make us run screaming. Eparistera Daimones entraps us with no chance to escape. Beware.

'After' that disturbing definition comes the free crossing, the transcendence of all boundaries - which, sadly, metal audiences seem to less appreciate. Ihsahn's completing part of a trilogy paints a picture in grim tones, but using a vast variety of paints and textures, with the light yet solid hand, brush and pick of a master. There's no musical area where Ihsahn wouldn't feel at home, and 'After' is an organic sculpture of the artist's long-traveled completion. The maturing, evolving, diverse metal listener finds their comrade in Ihsahn.

'Blackjazz' by Shining falls in the same paradigm (minus neo-classicism), signifying the willingness of jazz to embrace metal. Is it, for the first time, true jazz sensibility embodied in metal, or, vice versa, a lurking metal sensibility demanding its embodiment by jazz musicians?

Luckily for metal, is a drummer of the caliber of the best black groovers. Hearing him live broke the cliche in my mind that there is no drummer like a black drummer. James Brown would have been satisfied.

I'd dream of a rhythm-section consisting of Torstein and Lars Norberg, of whom a friend said: "As if Jaco Pastorius has resurrected, evolved, and decided to play progressive metal."

Blackjazz is a shining, solid artifact - one that should shake the conservative roots of a stale metal scene. The same scene seems to have failed to notice this artifact, but indeed, music for the masses has never been what counts.

While saying that, I immediately make an objection: there's "Metal God"'s latest offering, Halford - Made of Metal. Here we talk about classicism, about unveiling metal in its history, oozing from the vocal chords - and the heart! - of a brilliant, and brilliantly polished singer. In His golden age, a metal God surrenders inhuman sharpness (never forget the ultimate definition of "metal", "Painkiller"...) for depth, warmth and roundness. If there is such a thing as a "metal brotherhood", it is tangibly felt through the lyrics:

Beg steal or borrow

Like there's no tomorrow

Your fortune is fleeting

But love has no bounds

Dare to be open

Your wild heart has spoken

Each one of us has

What we know must be found

Must be found

Throw aside intellectualism, we LOVE Halford!

Below, I must list 1349's Demonoir - a record so hot, I have had to resort to frozen ice-cream while listening. It is a well-calculated hellish mechanism. Vocals, at least on the record, are precision. It of course features Frost: musician fiercely intense, manic, and very sensual and fleshy all the same; sensual whilst meticulously applying each crushing stroke, and conceptualizing his grand-scale vision of a genre he believes in. Together with Tom G. Fischer, another example of a martyr in the name of art.

I have not yet participated with 1349 live, but it must feel like surrendering to fire in a controlled environment. I cannot wait.

Then there's my favorite subgenre of Oriental metal:

Melechesh return with The Epigenesis - a record I admittedly have not gotten fully into; so, for now, my sympathies lean toward Sphynx (not least due to the presence of Proscriptor).

Orphaned Land - The Never Ending Way of ORWarriOR

Aeternam - Disciples of the Unseen

Kamelot - Poetry for the Poisoned: even though my sympathies stay with the band Conception, I cannot but recognize Kamelot's exquisiteness, and especially in this record. The refinement seems endless. If there are operatic vocals in metal that delight me, these Khan's.

I leave the 10th position open for whatever I have omitted...

Daath - Daath, why not.

(Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini has not eluded me, but I have always suspected Enslaved of pseudo-philosophism, and here it has emanated.)

Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones - Prowling Death Records / Century Media Records

Ihsahn - After - Mnemosyne Productions / Candlelight Records

Shining - Blackjazz - Indie Recordings

Halford - Made of Metal - Metal God Entertainment

1349 - Demonoir - Indie Recordings / Prosthetic Records

Melechesh - The Epigenesis - Nuclear Blast Records

Orphaned Land - The Never Ending Way of ORWarriOR - Century Media Records

Aeternam - Disciples of the Unseen - Metal Blade Records

Kamelot - Poetry for the Poisoned - Edel Music / KMG Recordings

Daath - Daath - Century Media Records

My songs of 2010:

Triptykon - Shatter - haunting and addictive

Samael - Antigod: Samael's EP is a clue to the upcoming record, which I am anxiously awaiting. 'Antigod' (EP) satisfies fully, as Samael seem to have nailed it: the intricacy of Passage plus the industrial trill. Their strict yet abundant, subtle yet assertive, conceptualized aesthetics are what appeals to me the most in metal. Their lyrics are my mantras.

1349 - Psalm 7:77 - infectious and meticulously unnerving

Shining - Fisheye: only jazzmen could take over metal with such an attitude. Sweeping.

Ihsahn - Frozen Lakes on Mars - saturating. The progressive heaviness Ihsahn has been approximating throughout his career.

I shall conclude with a few words on Ihsahn.

Here is one of these rare individuals which are born as fine artists. He is sheer embodiment of Beauty; he comes from the domains of Beauty we are never to fully understand, but we are to feel and appreciate. Ihsahn is here for our delight, and he generously invites us to indulge.

A few lines I had written upon the release of After:

"Some critics have duly described Ihsahn's last installment as "measureless"; this said, its limitlessness is devoid of a pretense ascribed by some to the artist. Not only After isn't pompous - it is a refutation of indiscriminate expansion. The measurelessness of the concluding part of Ihsahn's opus stems from an in-depth, sober and subtle reflection upon the genesis of heavy music, and a pure, sweeping, saturating emotion. To Jorgen Munkeby we owe the rare witnessing of genuine jazz sensibility in metal. Lars Norberg and Asgeir Mickelson of legendary Spiral Architect are the usual, but extraordinary suspects in making After a document of finest aestheticism. This Romantic masterpiece transgresses genre characteristics, molding together the heritage of our contemporary musical background in a brush vivid and innovative, and authentically metal in the Artist's bold venturing into Everything. The tides of After whisper to our hearts the unbearable."

Yet I admit that my favourite Ihsahn is angL. What I love about it is, namely, the pure aestheticism, the apology of Beauty, versus the agonism of After. Venus (ruler of Libra) could not have aimed at a more profound incarnation.

Indulge your lips, I do insist...

Drink up!

Indefinite the course of my descent.

P.S. I was wondering why Shining (Nor) is absent from this otherwise largely adequate list:

https://pub.needlebase.com/actions/visualizer/V2Visualizer.do?domain=Metal-Index&query=Best+of+2010

A friend enlightened me:

"It's because Shining is not on the Metal Archives database because they are "not metal enough" (according to them, anyways), that's why :-)"

The metal "scene" is hopeless. Thankfully, there are artists who create for the Individual.

Meanwhile, Helloween have sold out their concert where I live, and there will be a second one.

"'Cause we all live in Future world, our life is full of joy. Our future life will be glorious, come with me, Future world."

...And being here-and-now is, as we all know, Jazz.:))

The releases by Unearthly Trance and Torche were a bit underwhelming last year, in my opinion, and Anthropocentric was nowhere near as good as Heliocentric (though I did like them both). Most of the other stuff on your list I either didn't listen to, or I listened once and never went back to listen again (which usually means I wouldn't have liked it anyway).

I noticed you didn't include Red Sparowes...are you not familiar with them? Given some of your other choices, I might have expected to see that one on your list somewhere...

I agree that it's too long, I think they should've dropped 1 or 2 songs and kept it onto one disc. But the truth is I do like every song, and I definitely LOVE a handful of them, it's the album I wanted Symphony X to make. I'm not gonna get all principled and dock points because the album runs 5-10 minutes too long when I honestly really enjoy all of it when broken up a bit. It's been my go to "in the car" album for months, and is easily my #1 for 2011.

Fair enough. I am the not biggest fan of Symphony X though I enjoy their work, but I can see why I wouldn't mind either if one of my favorite bands released a really long record.

However I feel the length is one reason why it hasn't been on many lists because individual songs counted, it is admittedly better than a lot of the albums put out this year.

I won't be shocked if Mastodon wins or doesn't win. The reception on The Hunter hasn't been as strong as it was for Crack The Skye, but it has gotten a strong enough reaction to make a run for the top spot. Like I said the other day in the Now Playing thread, there are so many albums (from just about every subgenre of metal) that have gotten an extremely postive reception this year that it's going to be really hard to predict what albums will finish in the Top 10. If I was a gambler, I would say Symphony X, Mastodon, Opeth(though it won't finish as high as past Opeth albums have), and Vektor are the only locks for the Top 10 this year.

The album is just not that damn good, people. It has good moments, yes, but fucking c'mon. That would be so weak. Having said that, it might actually win because of the way we do the voting. It'll get lots of points because it will likely be somewhere on many people's lists, but hopefully not at the top of many. Oh well - whatever happens, happens.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Just listened to it again today, found myself getting really bored at times, and really into it at others. If it gets voted as say, even in the top 5, it's because of the name on the album cover. If "Band X" had released The Hunter, nobody would even be talking about it.

I disagree in the case of The Hunter (I fucking love it and think it is deserving of all the praise it gets), but I do agree that certain bands on here get high spots on the year-end list just because of who they are (**coughcough Iron Maiden winning album of the year last year**).
