This got me thinking of a scene from the Kevin Smith film 'Chasing Amy'. Jason Lee and Joey Lauren Adams characters talk about how it's easier to eat a girl out if they would just point you in the right direction while you're doing it.

There's some truth in that. Some girls just expect you to know where their eruption button is without saying anything to you while you're down there.

If the Foo Fighter's song "All My Life" is truly about that, Dave hit the nail on the head with the line: "I love it but I hate that taste". Pretty much sums it up for me. I do it though, the pros outweigh the cons, and she absolutely loves it, so why not.

The Office rules. If you can't connect with Jim and Pam in some way and don't think Michael Scott and Dwight are some of the funniest characters ever then I feel sorry for what you're missing out on.

How I Met Your Mother was funny but I stopped watching after like the fourth season. Seriously, it takes him this long to tell the story to his kids on how he met their mom? My mom and dad told me how they met when I was a kid and that story took them about a minute to tell. I lost interest once it we knew that Sarah Chalke from Scrubs wasn't gonna be the mom.

One problem with American TV is that it has no planned ending. If you succeed, you get to go do it again every single year. It's why Arrested Development and Twin Peaks (both canceled very early in their runs) never started sucking, and why no British shows worth watching in the first place ever start sucking.

The Office and How I Met Your Mother have both been on way too long and an episode of 22 minutes might have 1 minute we haven't seen the show do before, and better.

That's the only person on the UK version of the show that ever made me laugh. There was no one else on the show who I thought was even close to being funny. I just figured since it was a different country and culture that the sense of humor was different and that's why I never "got" the original version of the show.

I do really, really enjoy the British office. But I've grown to love Jim and Pam's relationship so much, and the character Steve Carrell has forged with Michael is deeper than the one Ricky Gervais played, IMO. As a whole, there's better supporting characters... Creed, Kevin, Meredith, Stanley, and Oscar are just hilarious.

Office UK version is just the Ricky Gervais awkwardness show.

Office US is just the Steve Carrell awkwardness show.

Oh wait except in the US version just about every minor character is also hilarious.

Seriously, screw the "UK Office > US Office" with a tinge of elitism. I'm American, I understand American mannerisms, language, and humor, and I think its funny. I don't "get" a lot of British humor (hell, I can't even understand them when they talk fast sometimes), but that doesn't make me a knuckle dragging mouthbreather.

What genre do you guys consider Botch? And what are metalcore bands that you like/appreciate?I love Botch. They are heavy as fuck, and idiosyncratic as hell, like IntrOnaut (another favorite of mine). Botch is difficult to classify, but they are labeled as "mathcore" on Wikipedia, which I wouldn't argue with (mainly because who the fuck cares?). Mathcore is a sub-genre of metalcore, so I guess by default that makes them metalcore, then (provided, of course, that you buy in to their classification as mathcore to begin with). IntrOnaut, however, is generally classified as post-metal, for whatever reason. I wouldn't necessarily disagree with that, either (because again, who the fuck cares?).

I don't know. I just like them. That's enough for me.

I also like bands such as Converge, Coalesce, Dillinger Escape Plan (a little bit, anyway), Darkest Hour and Unearth.

Well my friend had this band that broke up a little bit back, and recently he decided to start it up again with some different people and he asked me if I wanted to be the second guitarist (with him being the other one). So I gladly accepted and he said that his goal was for us to play our first show (with this new lineup, the band has played a few shows in the past with previous lineups) opening for Destruction in NYC in May (the guy's got connections). So apparently last night he got an offer to do the whole fucking tour, but because of the previously mentioned problems(two of us in high school, two in college, expenses), there's just no way we could pull it off.

I just can't believe that the offer was even made in the first place.

Thanks for clearing that up, Nat. Metalcore is just so broad, I guess Botch does fit in somewhere. I don't know if I would consider DEP part of metalcore because of their uniqueness. They kind of transcend genres. Darkest Hour and Unearth are two of the best Melo-metalcore bands out there.

Mastodon is DEFINITELY not metalcore; I agree with you. Progressive sludge I call them; "Lifesblood" (and consequently "Call of the Mastodon") are such muddy, heavy, sludgy records, far from metalcore. One of my favorite bands personally, although I'm more of a Blood Mountain guy. Still one of my top 5 albums of all time :rocker:

I'd figure you'd like those bands, Mastodon421 ;). KSE and AILD are definitely polarizing bands; I like them both too but I totally understand how people hate them. I do think Tim Lambesis is a great vocalist, and I've come to really like AILD music the past couple years. I don't know if I would call Hatebreed metalcore, but whatever.

Bands like Bring Me The Horizon and Asking Alexandria are also considered metalcore. What. The. Fuck? They need to make a new genre to classify those idiots to separate them from being even near this great genre. Seriously; BMTH and Converge, classified in the same genre...

:wtf:

I agree, BMTH and Asking Alexandria are both horrendous, I do think BMTH is metalcore (just really bad metalcore). Asking Alexandria on the other hand, I really don't know know to classify them, My friends and I call them "doo doo core";)

I'm sorry. Here's some cold hard truth: the opportunity never arose to "try" anything, but I feel really good about the night. We've really been clicking the past few days, hanging out a lot more. I used to share this awkwardness, which is why when I started to get to know my girlfriend and it started to look like it was headed down "that road", I basically just told her: "Look, I don't have much experience in this area, and am kinda awkward and shy - so feel free to kinda take the lead if you want to", and it worked great. But yeah, in order for that to happen, you have to be aware you're on the same page - I just recommend reaching that as soon as possible. Nothing is worse than allowing a girl to lead you on for a long time when she has no real intentions of doing anything. Better to just face the awkwardness right away and then potentially let it lead you to awesomeness. That's my best input.

Don't worry man. You're 16. Thats nothing in the overall scheme of things. Just keep being yourself and the opportunity for a lady will come, especially when you get to college. I admit that it IS a huge joke to be really concerned about relationships and relationships/sexual experience when you're really young (like under 18), because frankly I think it's kind of unnatural and weird to have a ton of experience at that age, and the whole "there are plenty more fish in the sea" thing is still true. But it can start to get very annoying and weird once you're about 20 and that still hasn't changed. For example, it's kind of a pain in the ass to have to try to balance your first serious relationship with your first encounters with serious, real-life problems. And also, the more time you spend without any experience, the more you run the risk of never being able to get that experience with someone who has WAY more than you, which can be really awkward.

Or a few weeks for that matter. :tp:
But nothing is ever one-size-fits-all, you can never tell someone, "look, you're young, you guys won't get married and spend the rest of your lives together", or just be together and be very happy for a very long time. But yes, the vast majority of relationships with people under 20 are really just a joke and ultimately a prelude to the next thing.

Whats really weird is my entire circle of friends have mastered the art of a long term relatioship, all of us have been able to hold relatioships for a year upwards since we were 16, one or two are now in the third/fourth year of their relationship they started at 16/17, with no signs of anything going wrong. Its strange, but it can happen. And we're all quite similar to how we were back then, just a little more mature at approaching these things.

I think there's a difference between the want of a chick for purposes of getting laid, and the want of a chick or purposes of a serious relationship, the latter of which requires more thought/preparation, and henceforth more worrying/overthinking.

And I was tired of over thinking it, so I just asked. I'm trying to be more forward, instead of being shy and tip-toeing around the issue. There are 25,000 girls here at OSU, no reason to worry about one.

Fair enough, but if I weren't in a relationship I'd have a really different list of concerns. To be honest, I'm very, very glad I waited until I had a serious relationship to lose it, but I'm scared to death at the prospect of possibly eventually having to basically start over again with someone new, since everyone is different. I actually find the idea of "getting around" or anything like it so incredibly unappealing.

That being said, I can't even imagine going extended periods of time without it now, haha. So I can't imagine if I were to be single again it wouldn't return to being a huge concern of mine.

I'm with Mankvill on this. biggest piece of advice I can give is this, girls are the most insecure creatures on the planet, they just are, they overthink things way more than we do, and when it comes to going out, well, have you ever waited for a girl to get ready? half the time is spent picking shit out to wear so her ass looks just ever so slightly smaller. As such, the best thing you can do, is even PRETEND like you aren't self conscious. Girls not only admire that, but they will cling to that. All humans do it, and within the world of female attraction, its absolutely no different.

I'm way more concerned about my classes (currently taking six classes, all 300 and 400 level) and my job at the newspaper (editor of Weekend, the entertainment supplement - I'm spending multiple hours a day talking with writers and management and designers and doing dirty work in the newsroom) at this point in my life.

Well, since you're talking to a board of socially awkward metalheads, maybe you could tell us how much confidence matters to you?

Haha, despite being a socially awkward metalhead myself, here we go. Confidence was never one of the bigger things that mattered to me, so maybe I'm a bad person to ask, haha. I always focus on a guy's personality rather than his self-confidence.

Do rock groupies even exist anymore?

Also, do I really want to read through 6 more pages of CoS running in the race with Indestructible for most hated person here only to find out he was faking it the whole time?

I mean shitty dick wiping Allah, I'm probably the least experienced person with the ladies here, am very lonely, and I don't even whine about this shit.

Also, I am going to try and use Allah's name in vain whenever the reflex comes up to use Jesus.

Furthermore

I disagree.

I sort of see what he means with this. I mean, the experience of having sex is certainly awesome, I think he means more of the so called "rite of passage" of not being a virgin anymore. After my trip home from first getting laid, I more or less felt the exact same way as I did before. I didn't really feel like I had conquered some massive hurdle and that my life was going to completely change. At best I can lie on my deathbed knowing that I'm not a virgin. I mean does that really mean anything at the end of the day?

Basically body burden is the presence of potentially hazardous chemicals in the human body that we absorb through contact with commercial and industrial products, foods, and the environment. You can get blood and urine tests to determine your personal "body burden."

It's just a shortening of two words, like people do when they get personalized license plates for cars and only have seven letters to convey the meaning of a word(s) with more than seven letters...which is exactly what happened (I had that license plate for a while back in the mid 90's).

I usually asl someone else who knows - if that's not an option, I simply smile and politely ask, "I'm sorry...how do you pronounce your name? - I want to make sure I say it correctly.". That shows that I'm simply trying to be respectful.

Or you could just call him "dude". That would probably be more metal. :metal:

Honestly, not bad. I am a guitarist, and writing solos is a constant learning process, and you have to start somewhere, and where you are right now is not a bad starting point. I will say learn the basic keys, the pentatonic and melodic minor modes in E and A specifically, as they are the most prevolent in metal music, and the best vantage point to get better at metal leads. Some of it is slightly out of key, but trust me, once you learn those scales, it will all click into place perfectly. Simply a matter of seeing what chords you are playing over and dancing around them 'til you hear something that makes you go 'Righteous!' :D

I've been playin' guitar here for many a year now, also. So here's my two cents:

Dex is right, you gotta start somewhere. Soloing on guitar is a complicated and long process to master, and your best tool is to listen to all different types of guitar work.

Right now, you're sticking with the pentatonics, which is understandable. That's where I started back in the day, with my "Learn how to play the Blues" book. Master the Blues. They are your friend. Listen to Clapton, Stevie Ray, Billy Gibbons, Muddy Waters, and especially B.B. King. Master their techniques and style. That'll teach you how to put serious emotion into a couple notes, which in my opinion separates the boys from the men in soloing.

But Pentatonics only take you so far. You'll need to eventually learn scale patterns all the way up your fretboard, especially the various types of minor scales. Personally, I started out with Metallica, but their riffs tend to be similar and solos sometimes just noisy and spastic. If you don't know the solos to "Fade to Black", get on that right now.

My "growing up" point in terms of Metal playing was learning Lamb of God. Just sit down one weekend, and look up tabs to every single song on "Ashes of the Wake" and "As the Palaces Burn". DON'T PLAY THEM AT FULL SPEED. Work on going through every song, and learning the patterns that the riffs are played in. It's really not that complicated; Mark and Willie just play them with such precision that they sound amazing. You'll soon find that "Lamb of God"-ish pattern on your neck, and combining that with the finesse learned from the Blues, you can start improvising some truly Metal-sounding riffs.

After you have mastered every single Lamb of God track, you'll have a better idea on how to create metal solos, and you can move onto deeper study. Personally, I would go onto learning some Arch Enemy, Carcass, Decapitated, etc. I'm sure its like this for you, but my meaning in guitar life for about a solid year was learning how to play a fucking sweep arpeggio. It's one of the hardest tactics to master, yet one of the coolest sounding solo techniques out there. I would take an Arch Enemy solo, break it down to a super slow speed, and just look on the fretboard for where the arpeggios occur. You'll find patterns that match up with the minor scales you've learned. After much practice, and after you've looked up videos or even taken lessons on the correct techniques for arpeggios, You can finally move onto stuff like Necrophagist, Between the Buried and Me, The Faceless, or Children of Bodom.

Don't discredit other genres too, ESPECIALLY JAZZ. Learning Jazz guitar is perhaps the most helpful thing to your technique, but takes a lot of practice. But break down any Opeth solo or Atheist and its basically all jazz technique. Metal and Jazz are interconnected when it comes to technicality and finesse.

In the end: You're in a good starting place. That was me around 7th - 8th grade, just wanting to wail out on pentatonics and sound cool. It works, but to play like a true metal soloist you need to study how they play. Formal lessons is always an option, and actually probably the easiest way to get amazing, but I always enjoyed just studying the music I listened to. When you pull from a wide variety of soloist influences, you can learn to create your own unique and cool style. Until then, best of luck! And I would be an awful sweep arpeggio teacher, don't ask me how I'm able to do it. ;)

EDIT: What I'm still working on to this day is efficient alternate picking, especially skipping between strings. That is so fucking hard for me; you can never get good at it yet those solos sound the BEST. I grew up playing the cello since age 10, and I've always found legato-style solos to be fairly easy for me. A great legato style with a fast left hand can create some killer solo riffs, and fool people into thinking you can play well! :D

EDIT #2: Oh yeah, if you want to learn how to create some amazing sounding, soulful solos for metal, listen to the band "SCALE THE SUMMIT". An absolutely amazing instrumental outfit, that doesn't necessarily play fast, but play some mind-blowing riffs that are easy to learn yet hard to master. Especially if you want to learn how to finger tap like a pro. I would recommend them to ANYONE who plays guitar and is maybe stuck in a rut writing solos. IF YOU EVER GET STUCK MAKING A SOLO, listen to something new. Its amazing how some people play guitar out there, and truly inspiring.

I'm trying to plan a vacation in Myrtle Beach with my brother. I turn 21 in mid-July, so I figure late July would be optimal. If we split the costs, I can probably pay for 3 nights in an okay hotel and gas for under $200, plus $100 or $150 or so for food/drink. Get a part-time job in the beginning of summer and I'll be all set. :rocker:

All true and enormously relevant. Lamb of God, Pantera, Metallica and Slayer were my guitar BIBLE for the first three years I was playing, and seriously helped my writing and technique. Jazz and acoustic stuff, like Don Ross or Andy Mckee, I find is incredibly good for your grasp of melody and how a song comes together. Its not hard to learn about these things, you don't even need to know how to play them, jus get a tab and look at a bunch of scales til you see the notes match, then check out how and why they match up.

Thanks JD, that was extremely helpful.

I'm not sure if I will change the solo for Metal Attack (maybe just play it a bit more in key, that was just a performance problem), but thanks to you guys, my next solo will sound completely different. I don't expect to master soloing in a week or a month or a year. But as you guys suggested, next time it will be using a different scale and less flashy, more emotional.

Need some advice on getting into a 21+ show. It's at a bar. And a fake ID isn't an option- I'm 18, but I barely look 17...

If the fake ID looks good enough I doubt they would give you any trouble.

I don't look anywhere near 21 though. And I'm too cheap to buy a fake anyway.

The first time I tried to get into a 21+ venue was for a Vital Remains show, but they canceled at the last second, so the doorman didn't even bother checking ID's. The 2nd time I showed my ID but they wouldn't let me go in.
