Where's the fax machine plugged in? Is it in a separate wall-socket? Does that socket have a microswitch in it? Every socket that you use for any kind of telephony equipment needs to have a microswitch in it, not just the one the router is plugged in to.

Just a thought.

the fax machine is plugged into my modem which also handles cable/phone/wifi not sure if any problems can come through that

I managed to fix it with this whole complicated process of looking up guides and downloading stuff on my phone, transferring them to my PC and getting into my router with a weak internet connection. But I managed to update my firmware and now my internet is running faster than ever so I feel accomplished

You basically described my video gaming history, except for the Pong part, I was too young at the time I think. Also switch out NBA for NHL and there you go. I had an Atari 2600 too and I find myself often missing the time when games were simpler. Maybe not Atari simple, but at least NES/SNES simple.

Same here had the good ole Atari 2600. After that Commodore 64 and then my first ibm compatible pc. During the same time I got a NES. After that I would get a few more consoles and then I started getting more into PC gaming. After the xbox came out I went back to pc gaming and then decided to buy a xbox 360 instead of upgrade my pc. Two of those took a shit decided to stay with my ps3 and wii. A few years ago I built a new pc and have been heavy pc once again.

Consoles I've owned:

Atari 2600
NES
Super NES
Genesis
Sega CD
Atari Jaguar :eyes:
PSone
Sega Dreamcast (still own)
PS2 (still own)
PS3 (still own)
Xbox (still own)
Xbox 360
Wii (still own)

Portables:

Gameboy
Gameboy Color
Sega Game Gear :eyes:
Gameboy Advanced (still own)
Gameboy Advanced SP
Sony PSP (still own)
Nintendo DS (still own)
Nintendo DS Lite (still own)

I agree. The old-school video game addict in me likes the simple arcade-style games the best. However, the tech nerd in me also enjoys the sheer detail and realism that many of the PS3 and similar style games deliver nowadays as well. I can't believe how realistic the physics in Burnout Paradise are, for example - and from what I've heard, that's nothing compared to some of the newer games. I just love being blown away by improvements in technology in general, I guess - but give me a good game of Centipede, Bomb Jack, Super Pac-Man or Mario Bros. (the original single-screen game, none of this "Super Mario" side-scroller shit ) any fucking day, and watch my eyes light up. :D

Completely agree I can definitely have fun with old games. However, I love the fact I can boot up Crysis on max detail and . Or throw in Uncharted 2 in my ps3. It amazes me how far graphics have come since I first started gaming.

One thing I miss is arcades. I used to love to go to arcades.

Been a really stressful time at home lately, what with my dads surgery coming up, our broadband and digital tv copping out on us, and my friends have decided to tear each other apart.

However, things are looking up, gonna start doing reviews for a local website, my first being 'In Waves', and I have two covers for my youtube channel, and my first two originals of my solo album almost finished. That, and the GoW 3 epic edition and Arkham City epic edition are pre-ordered :D

Can I offer some constructive criticism? You kind of do the same thing as a lot of AV Club folks: you spend the first two or three paragraphs talking about something sort of related to what you're reviewing, but I'm not interested in that; I just want to know what you thought of the album. When I see stuff like that, I fast-foward to the part I'm interested in. :2cents:

Well, considering I want to work for the AV Club, I'll take that as an extremely backhanded compliment.

Seriously though, I dig that, it's just sort of a style-conformity thing. The Quietus doesn't have word caps, we tend to try to kind of tie everything into something bigger and be analytical, so there's no reason not to spend a few paragraphs on that kind of tangential stuff. There's a billion blogspots that can tell you what an album sounds like and what they think about it, and while I can do that stuff too and do it well (and do for Jukebox and WEEKEND, for both style and word cap reasons), I do really enjoy the sort of looseness of my Quietus writing. It's what's gonna get me a job at Pitchfork or the AV Club, not my 125 word "this sounds like this, is good/bad" reviews.

powerslave_85
08-11-2011, 10:36 AM
The AV Club is just weird. Their movie reviews are usually like 500 words or so, but they can spend two to three times that talking about one episode of Community

Nah, I get it, maybe it's just a personal pet peeve. I like the analytical stuff too, but when a review is front-loaded with it, I tend to tune out. Even though I'm at odds with him 90% of the time, Roger Ebert is an example of someone who's good at weaving in the analysis throughout the review more organically.

I agree with your review, though. I think the album's pretty boring.

DethMaiden
08-11-2011, 10:45 AM
I tend to find really newsy leads for reviews like Ebert does jarring. "Such and Such is a terrible movie headlined by and unconvincing cast working with a painfully contrived script." Whoa, Rog, why don't you ease me in a little bit? Comes down to taste, though, I reckon.

powerslave_85
08-11-2011, 10:51 AM
See, I prefer his approach to a lot of other critics these days who are so obtuse and wishy-washy that you can't tell whether or not they even liked it unless you look at their rating.

DethMaiden
08-11-2011, 10:55 AM
Well, I definitely like that he's decisive, I just think he tends to write a bit too much like he's writing a Page One newspaper story sometimes. I truly believe that language is allowed to be flowery and useless when it's about something that doesn't matter at all like a movie or an album. ;)

mastodon421
08-11-2011, 11:00 AM
As a fellow writer (even though Brad is a lot, lot better than me) , I tend to take a pretty standard apporach. I go into my reviews pretty quick. I have found when I try to get wordy, it just becomes redundant. I like to get my views on the record or film out as clearly as possible and not have anybody getting bored with my review.

larvtard
08-11-2011, 01:36 PM
Album reviews are stupid, unless written correctly. I don't need youto tell me what an album sounds like. I need you to give me a unique reason why I should listen to it. The only review I've ever written that I'm proud of is my review of Dragged Into Sunlights' Hatred For Mankind. In that review I offer a different perspective, comparing the album to Conrad's Heart of Darkness.

powerslave_85
08-11-2011, 01:45 PM
I don't need you to tell me what an album sounds like. Why not? The point of reviews isn't to reinforce what people already know, it's to help convince people to listen to something. If you're descriptive about the music, you can bring in people who might not otherwise give it a chance, or who maybe listen to similiar stuff, but haven't heard of that particular band.

Why do you listen to music? Do you have a unique way for why you listen to each and every album?

I personally listen to every album I listen to because I'm looking for the next greatest album, not because I'm looking for random and, quite frankly, useless connections. I'm most likely never going to listen to an album and enjoy it because it brings Marlow's character into focus or anything like that. If it sounds good, I'll listen to it. What I do as a writer is try and flush out all of the reasons that I enjoy or dislike an an album, but beyond the "this is good, this is bad," obviously. There's no such thing as a universally good reviewer, so it's hard to try to fit yourself into that mold.

Dextrimental
08-11-2011, 04:44 PM
I generally just look for an overview with a review. I don't care for the perspective, I just look for a general overview on how the album is, good or bad, and perhaps some comparison between this release and the bands previous releases. I'm working on my first review this evening, to be online this weekend, and I'm taking that perspective.

But that's terribly generic. Almost all reviews are written in that way. Sure, I'd appreciate a few sentences saying "yeah this is really good doom/sludge for fans of Eyehategod," but beyond that, there's no point in saying "well I like this song because it has an awesome thrash break" because I can find that thrash break myself. If I wasn't going to listen to that album anyway, an awesome thrash break won't convince me otherwise.

I'm alright luckily and I have loads of witnesses/pics and insurance. But seriously he wasn't considered legally drunk (only tested 0.2) yet the cops found beer cans in his car, and he had a suspended license, and he had this fucked up metal hip and shouldn't have been driving in the first place. Yet they still couldn't arrest him? I hate the law sometimes. Even the cop was completely pissed at that guy.

I went to Six Flags Over Texas on my day off from there with my dad to finally go ride the new Texas Giant. At first I was afraid that it may have been over-hyped, but it did not disappoint, especially in the last row .It was absolutely awesome, but I think I still like the old Giant better just because it rattled your brains out and this one is so smooth. Still a great ride though. It's still tied for number 1 at the park with Mr. Freeze. All in all it was a great afternoon!

hey, you work there right? Dallas has been like 105 degrees each day this summer...must be brutal out there all day

Yes I do and sometimes it is just ridiculous out there. We have first aid driving through the park for people passing out from dehydration all the time. It sucks so much working out in the heat especially if the sun is directly in your face. I envy those who work at Batman and Mr. Freeze.

Damn, good to know you're okay. I fucking hate drunk drivers and people who drink and drive. If that ever happened to me and I survived I don't think I could contain myself from beating the shit out of the drunk who hit me. Sucks about the car and the guy not getting arrested though. Thanks for the concern. I was more in shock that I almost died, dude came straight at me at full speed and all I could do was turn a little to the left. Even if I did get out of the way the person behind me would have been fucked (they only got scraped a little).

I am currently trying with all of the powers given to me to shut down Design the Skyline's Wikipedia page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_the_Skyline

A wikpedia user by the name of Gunmetal Angel, the creator of the page, reverts any ticket I create to propose eventual deletion (a process which takes 7 days and needs to be reviewed anyway). In my opinion, Design the Skyline pass none of the 12 Wikipedia criteria to be a notable musical artist or ensemble:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(music)

1.Has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable and are independent from the musician or ensemble itself.[note 1]
This criterion includes published works in all forms, such as newspaper articles, books, magazine articles, online versions of print media, and television documentaries[note 2] except for the following:
Any reprints of press releases, other publications where the musician or ensemble talks about themselves, and all advertising that mentions the musician or ensemble, including manufacturers' advertising.[note 3]
Works comprising merely trivial coverage, such as articles that simply report performance dates, release information or track listings, or the publications of contact and booking details in directories.
Articles in a school or university newspaper (or similar) would generally be considered trivial but should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

2.Has had a single or album on any country's national music chart.

3.Has had a record certified gold or higher in at least one country.

4.Has received non-trivial coverage in independent reliable sources of an international concert tour, or a national concert tour in at least one sovereign country.[note 4]

5.Has released two or more albums on a major label or on one of the more important indie labels (i.e. an independent label with a history of more than a few years, and with a roster of performers, many of whom are notable).

6.Is an ensemble which contains two or more independently notable musicians, or is a musician who has been a member of two or more independently notable ensembles.

7.Has become one of the most prominent representatives of a notable style or the most prominent of the local scene of a city; note that the subject must still meet all ordinary Wikipedia standards, including verifiability.

8.Has won or been nominated for a major music award, such as a Grammy, Juno, Mercury, Choice or Grammis award.

9.Has won or placed in a major music competition.

10.Has performed music for a work of media that is notable, e.g. a theme for a network television show, performance in a television show or notable film, inclusion on a notable compilation album, etc. (But if this is the only claim, it is probably more appropriate to have a mention in the main article and redirect to that article. Read WP:BLP1E and WP:BIO1E for further clarifications)

11.Has been placed in rotation nationally by any major radio network.

12.Has been a featured subject of a substantial broadcast segment across a national radio or TV network.

...but this asshole tells me that they pass criteria 1, 4, 7, and 10, which I highlighted. :wtf: He is wrong, and I WILL HAVE MY SATISFACTION OF SEEING THIS PAGE DELETED. Does anyone know another way for me to report his edits to my deletion requests? Or to report him as a user?

Any character that can use The Force would easily dominate any Marvel character without psychic powers.

Darth Maul over Wolverine.
Luke Skywalker DOMINATING Spider-Man.
Obi-Wan Kenobia and Professor X would be tough. I think Professor X would win.

I went by who I think is a better character rather then who would win the fight. And in that sense it's:

Wolverine > Darth Maul
Luke Skywalker > Spiderman
Obi Wan > Professor X (thats a tough one though)

This is your first year at college right? How many units do the 4 classes you have add up to. Different schools have different rules for units, its stupid. 4 classes at my school would be a full load(16 units), and I wouldn't want to deal with anymore.
