The main thing I didn't like about the newest was that it was too serious and tried too hard to be alternative rock, but live they still have goofy dumb senses of humor and hopefully Tom got all his seriousness out with AVA. I'm ready for the next one.

I didn't like how serious they got. I always enjoyed them for having the aggressive sound mixed with the pop ad humor. Then they slowed down and got serious. I saw them last September and most of the set was newer material so I was bored for a long part of the set. I cracked up when Tom changed the lyrics to "she gives me rimjobs by the stairs, surprises let me know she cares"

I haven't really tried any of these tips yet, I'm in the same boat as you though. The one thing I've taken from all of this is: don't be the nice guy, be the asshole. At the very least, just act more confident than you actually are. I admit I still have issues with this "faking confidence" thing.

It just depends on that vibe you give off. Something about my vibe has just always turned off girls.

be the asshole.

But that's not me! We grow up being fed this bullshit that we should be ourselves and people will like us for that, but I can't cope with this cognitive dissonance. I feel like if I got just one girlfriend or one encounter, all this anxiety would melt away and I could gauge myself in social settings. I feel just as awkward as when I was 300 lbs, greasy ponytail, and acne. I have no experiences to convince me otherwise.

Ok well are you over 21 yet? Its easier to meet women at bars now a days. You should remember that you can get in some practice with the partying ones who don't want anything serious so by the time you find that girl you want to go out with, you know what to say.

Plus the easiest way to meet a women is this: go up to the drunk blond, pull out a rag and ask her if it smell like chloroform, works every time hahaha

That's perfectly normal man. Your feelings of awkwardness that you had when you were fat and ugly aren't just gonna go away now that you're not fat and ugly anymore. That's not usually how it works, sadly.

Oh, and I've never really tried being an asshole, but being a nice shy guy hasn't gotten me anywhere...

I haven't really tried any of these tips yet, I'm in the same boat as you though. The one thing I've taken from all of this is: don't be the nice guy, be the asshole. At the very least, just act more confident than you actually are. I admit I still have issues with this "faking confidence" thing.

"having confidence" doesn't necessarily mean you need to be an asshole. I've done fine being the nice guy, just make sure you have a sense of humor. It helps ;)

Not trying to mock you guys (unlike usually,) but can you talk to friend-girls or is the entire opposite gender impossible to communicate to?

I communicate just fine with chicks, but after I've been around them about five minutes they want nothing to do with me. Girls I've known a long time are different, though.

True, but being an asshole works for most people. I have a good sense of humor, I just don't let anyone ever know it. For example, my classmates in school generally describe me as "that guy who never talks, but when he opens his mouth, he's fucking hilarious!!!" or something to that effect.

Met my ex on last.fm, as well as tons of other potential women, unfortunately they all live states or countries away. But that's an easy way to find people that you can at least agree upon one thing with.

I have yet to still meet a girl who is "into" metal. I've met some pretty good looking girls who are into D&D, World of Warcraft, comic books and nerdy sic-fi TV shows, but it just isn't complete without metal, y'know? :dorky:

That approachanxiety site is actually really helpful. Thanks for posting.

And I don't really get invited to parties, and I'm not 21, so I haven't capitalized on the "drunk" game yet.

And I can definitely talk to girls, as long as I know before hand that it is friendly and in no way dating/sex related. I have a bad body image problem, where I don't know who is in my "league". I'm fine with talking to, sorry for being blunt, ugly/plain girls. I completely ignore pretty girls for some reason, like, I don't even think about them. And I obsess/stress over the hot babes.

Yeah, music is a big part of it I guess. But I need more than that... I need a chick that I can discuss history, philosophy, etc with. And I like the idea of meeting girls in person rather than online.

I'm just waiting, biding my time, drinkin' my wine, I suppose.

Well, that's normal. That's why you usually see the absolute hottest girls with assholes, they're the only ones brave enough to talk to those girls. I can talk to ugly girls too because I don't really care how I'm judged by them

Because I'm not attracted to them. They aren't necessarily ugly, but I'm not attracted to them. If I was, then it would be awkward talking to them. Cyclical logic, kind of. I think I should go for the pretty girls, the ones that i usually ignore. There are 8 of them for every ugly chick and babe.

Not entirely. But I feel like I'm in a better position than before. I didn't accept myself when I was 310 lbs, so I didn't expect any girls to accept me either. That was 11 months ago, and I can't wrap my head around the possibility that a girl will like me because I'm still a fat guy in my head.

Seriously, this guy in front of me wears the same dirty sweatshirt and unkempt hair every day, doesn't wash or shower probably, always has his head down, and stutters in a whiny voice when he asks a question. Not that I necessarily don't like him, but its just so goddamn typical of a computer nerd/loser. He's always eating shitty food too, during class, and playing Pokemon. I mean, I still play pokemon, but I do that on my own goddamn time. Its just really annoying that I have to look at him every Wednesday for 3 straight hours.

As for the metalheads, this one guy across the room always wears a Devildriver sweatshirt and/or a Toxic Holocaust shirt, and has some sick long hair. I am jelly. There was also this kid who wore a Between the Buried and Me shirt the first week, and I thought he was cool, but then he came in one day with an Alesana shirt and I considered plunging my mechanical pencil into his eyeball. Theres also one girl in our class, but no offense, she's pretty unattractive and a little dirty. Could be a lesbian.

In the end, I feel like I'm one of the most socially stable people in the class, and in the whole Computer Science major as a whole. Not that that's a bad thing, I think I'll be more employable as a result. I get to take some game programming classes next year, so hopefully I can realize my dream of becoming a game programmer for life... wearing jeans/shorts, flip-flops and metal t-shirts to work every day... work on games with a team of other socially-stable people... maybe get some tattoos, and not have it be job-suicide... work 14-hour work days, 7 days a week crunching to get games finished...

As for the female conversation, have you ever had one moment where you just blatantly disregard everything you've ever been told to try and have some fun or do something cool? I know I'm way late to the party, but I wasn't on the computer last night, so I'm only getting to this now. Regarding all the girls talk:

As someone who suffered from pretty much ALL the road blocks you guys are talking about over the course of several years, and has now been in a very happy relationship for just under a year, I can say that unless you are seriously socially fucked up and have deep issues, don't really get concerned, or try TOO hard to change. Changing who you are is NOT worth it for a girl who can't learn to accept you for you actually are. The "being an asshole" thing will work, if all you want out of life is to attract to sort of vain, vapid "hotties" who happen to go for that, who aren't really relationship material in the first place. So yeah - if all you want is sex with an attractive girl and nothing more - be an asshole. Be the biggest asshole around sooner or later it will work for you.

But if you want to actually meet a girl and work towards having a happy, successful relationship, you need to just learn how to be exactly who you are + confidence (note: NOT just being an arrogant douche). I've seen a lot of you comment about how you want a girl who's into the exact same stuff you are, and frankly, it's a nice thought - but an unnecessary one. If you want to be happy, you need to find a girl who can APPRECIATE the things you like, but moreso, simply thinks and enjoys things in the same way or on the same wavelength that you do. My girlfriend and I are not into the same music (for the most part, anyway), and music consumes about 80% of my life - but we do just fine, because she accepts the differences, doesn't try to change me, and respects what I love. You're never going to find a girl who's into EXACTLY what you are - and even if you do, that doesn't mean you're personally compatible. There's so much more to relationships than "we like the same stuff". It's not going to help you when you're having arguments about the fundamentally different ways you look at things.

One more thought, regarding attractiveness and whatnot: It goes without saying that you should not be pursuing girls who you are simply unattracted to, because if you aren't from the start, you're never going to be. But it's important to be open-minded. That doesn't mean lower your standards, just alter them a little bit. Guys have a bad habit of seeing 10 women, and assuming the one they would consider the most attractive is the one they should go for - while neglecting the fact that, say 3 other women in the 10 are more than attractive enough for them. There's also the whole issue of having "types" and "standards" and whatnot. Despite how disjointed this may read, my basic point is: "Be open-minded. Chances are you have 10x likelier chance of having a successful relationship with a girl you find pretty attractive, rather than a "perfect 10, knockout" sort of girl".

Ultimately - just be yourself, and try to be as confident as you can be. Girls (at least the ones worth caring about) don't want an act or a charade - they want what you want - to be happy, and to be with someone they relate to, who makes them happy. Don't let all of the bullshit floating around cloud your judgment or get you down. It's simpler than you think.

Thanks for the advice Jeff. I guess I'm just questioning myself. In high school I had confidence in myself; I liked metal, I liked comic books, I liked making puns, blah blah blah...I still like those things, but I'm not as confident in being my true self around people because I haven't met anyone else who likes those things.

Everyone is kind of the same here at Ohio State, and I made the mistake of trying to hide who I am to fit in after failing to find anyone who liked the exact same things as me. Now I know to look for someone who can appreciate my interests while having different ones.

Oh yeah man, I don't want to get into a relationship by being an asshole, but I've always associated having confidence with being an asshole.

Oh yeah man, I don't want to get into a relationship by being an asshole, but I've always associated having confidence with being an asshole.

Nope, it may seem that way because girls tend to get confidence confused with arrogance.

But yeah, Maiden33 nailed it on the head. Last summer I thought this girl I worked with would be perfect for me. I could say I was in love with her. But it turned out she was really shallow when it comes to guys and I guess I wasn't her ideal person for that, and the fact that I listened to metal threw it off as well. I tried really hard for like a month and a half to change myself. I tried to not listen to metal, I stopped wearing band shirts, thinking that she would notice at some point and like me. BIG FUCKING MISTAKE. That was who I really was, I wasn't happy at all trying to change myself. Hell, I felt like a huge hypocrite because I would always say that I would never change myself for anyone, yet I was too blind to notice. The fact that the month of September 2010 (when I was trying to change) was a huge shitstorm and everything possible went wrong was like an omen. As soon as I cut the crap and starting acting like I was before, everything changed not just back to normal, but things got a lot better than before as well.

Only then I realized that it's not worth a second of my time to change yourself and try and get with someone that doesn't like you for who you are. Don't change who you are for anyone.

Oh okay, I thought they had said that they were re-recording some songs from Demolition. That's good to hear, then. I've actually never listened to Demolition, so I don't even know if those songs are good or not, I just didn't like the fact that it wasn't all new material. That's all.

Shame. Oh, and I'm listening to their version of "Oblivion" from Demolition and it sucks  Vektor knows this, though.

also: I'm listening to "Fast Paced Society" and honestly I wouldn't mind them redoing these songs. They have the potential to sound so good, but the production is just painful and their execution is awful.

Yeah that's what I meant. I consider Black Future to be their first real album. The next album will have all the rest of Demolition except for Moonbase re-recorded. The new songs destroy too. Eric wants to record a new version of Moonbase as a bonus track to the next album but the rest of the band don't want too. He also said that a covers album might also happen. I suggested 2112, and they didn't say no, but Blake did say that it would be hard to do. They all really liked my tattoo.

So in short, I'm looking forward to their next 3 albums already!

One of the best stand up lines, from Chris Rock. Talking about the difference between Black People and "Niggas". I think it also applies to white people versus white trash: "[They] always want credit for shit they're supposed to do. Shit they're supposed to do. Case in point a friend of mine made a comment about a new religion, I made a crack about Oprahism (futurama ism) and that there is a cult in England who worships Ned Flanders. He started talking shit about all religion. I started talking about Atheism and Agnostics being just as rediculous. Which lead to an almost 4 hour discussion about how I am wrong about everything that's happened in history and they are right.

Just posted this in my "recordings" thread. My first attempt at a full-band track. Decided to try out this new, Journey-esque thing I'd been fucking around with, and this is the result of about 3 hours of work this afternoon. Sadly my computer's inability to process what I'm doing results in a whole bunch of little timing glitches, as does my inability to play drums well on a keyboard - but nevertheless for a first go at it, I'm pretty happy. Especially considering most of the takes were "one and done" unless there were glaringly bad mistakes.

Say, what do you know about life?

Mostly what I was just trying to say. Some people say your fun is over once you get into college because you have to do all this college work and you have to get a job. Some jobs and some classes you take may not be the best but there's no reason to hate what you're doing you have to find joy in it somehow. If you go into school or a job or anything in life, hating it thinking the fun time is over then yes it will not be fun. But if you say hey this isn't the best thing in the world but I will make it through and find a way to like it things will be fine. Im going to college in September and there are a few classes I have to take that I don't want to do, but I will make it fun anyways because you're just wasting your life if you sit around hating everything.
I know what I'm talking about here, I spent about the last six years of my life being anti social and hating everything and that didn't work out so well.

i dunno guys, college seems like a ton of fun. I'm just looking forward to see what I will do with my life. I have social anxiety disorder but I get a kick out of working with people even if it scares the crap out of me, I enjoy being in big groups and at parties, and even more so the center of attention. Dorming in another state is already a big experience for me, then comes joining a bunch of crap to meet people and taking public speaking classes and shit like that....Then of course the goal comes of maintaining a 4.0 average and finding a career. Either way I've been excited for it all year.

For summer I'm trying to get a job. Had an interview last wednesday, they will call this week if I get it. Have another one tomorrow. who knows...

Its some of the best times of your life, but also some of the hardest-working times. For example, I was out all Thursday partying with my friends and going to cool places around Chicago, and a lot of Friday playing D&D with my group here, all of which are normal people, not socially fucked, and some of which are surprisingly females. Goddamn, that is a fucking fun game. I went straight from class on Tuesday to hit up Rammstein, and will go straight from class Thursday to see Terror. I love having such control over my time, money, and pleasure.

On the flip side, I spent around 6 hours doing homework yesterday and another 8 today, and still have a 6 page paper to write which won't get done until the wee hours of the morning. You're either having a blast at college, or working your ass off.

Metalsetlist Black Metal experts was I right to call Skeletonwitch black metal?

I don't think you can call Skeletonwitch black metal.
Blackened thrash is more like Nifelheim, Abigail etc., the only thing "blackened" about Skeletonwitch is, like Brad said, occasionally the vocals, and that's even a stretch since harsh highish vocals are by no means exclusive to black metal.

It's not any good, but it also fails at being real underground-filth exploitation stuff, which it was attempting to create.
That and it obviously fails as a meaningful political shock film ala Men Behind the Sun, which is what I think the director was going for.

So I got called for an interview yesterday from a place I have no idea how they got my information or what it was. But supposedly they were looking for teens for their first work experience. I go in today and it was some stupid underground knife salesmen scam crap.

They said you start off selling to your family and other references. I told the interviewer that that's a waste of time and it just sounds like you are trying to scam people into making a sale. Then I backed up my family-waste-of-time claim with an example where I had to go out and interview (on film) random people for theology class, and while people were nervous and it was awkward for me at first it was a great growing experience with how to socialize with random people. Plus nobody needs knives. Dude was pretty pissed by the end of that, he lost my sale.

The hilarious part was when he said your resume will stand out...like what are you suppose to put? "I sold knives in the summer."

Wasted an hour there. Fuck salesmen.
