Inspired by a recent thread, I have been trying to look into some more black metal. I already listen to Bathory, Destroyer 666, Dimmu Borgir, Dissection, and some of Immortal's stuff, but I need more.
Any suggestions??

Sup fellow KC bro!

Essential first wave:

Bathory (all of it's good, but it's really only black metal up to "Blood Fire Death")
Venom (Welcome To Hell, Black Metal)
Hellhammer (Demon Entrails is a comp. of everything from them)
Celtic Frost (Morbid Tales, Emperor's Return, To Mega Therion)

Essential second wave:

Mayhem (Deathcrush EP, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas)
Burzum (Det Som Engang Var, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, Filosofem)
Darkthrone (A Blaze In The Northern Sky, Under A Funeral Moon, Panzerfaust)
Emperor (In The Nightside Eclipse) probably my favorite black metal album from this period
Gorgoroth (First three albums: Pentagram, Antichrist, Under The Sign Of Hell)

From there, you can branch out and find a lot that you like.

you are bad at recommending bands for genre newbies! :nonono:

It doesn't have Apocalyptic Raids, which rules.

I'd skip Burzum and Emperor.

I'm just trying to steer him in the right direction!
I.e. not what most people on here will tell him to listen to.
And all those bands rule :allan:

Well yeah, they're good, but if Jeff asked for an introduction to extreme metal I wouldn't go and tell him to listen to Anaal Nathrakh!

Why not?
I'd have loved it if someone recommended me awesome bands when I started listening to metal, would have saved me listening to a lot of shit.
Plus you could easily make the argument that Blasphemy, Sarcofago and Von are essential classic black metal which should be used to get into the genre, they just happen to be much more hateful/awesome/powerful than the boring standard Norwegian styled black metal bands people will recommend.

I was gonna include Sarcofago, but I'm more into starting people off small. Granted, I was introduced into extreme metal first, but I think I'm a rare exception!

You might want to narrow it down a bit. What aspects about those bands do you like? If you like the heavy metal influenced side of Immortal you should check out Abbath's other band, I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Do2ykXZ0zo&feature=related). Or if you like something with melody then check out Rotting Christ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YpW25dhzgE). If you like more thrashy stuff, check out Carpathian Forest's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdWWQfHq1JU) most recent album or Nifelheim (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1HjCe8NcZ0). Perhaps you would be into some more punk-ish black metal, like Imapled Nazarene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYhwUYmT_UQ). As a general recommendation I would say check out Enslaved (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0qnGDIwDUw) and Keep of Kalessin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FP6lVfvT1Yg) (first album). Hope that helps :)

I have to agree with Manks... good bands, but for most people it takes time to get into that stuff.

As someone who is just starting to get into Black Metal as well, I would suggest listening to Watain,Gorgoroth and Emperor. These are the 3 bands that made me realize that I can get into Black Metal.

Depends on what kind of black metal you're looking for, but everything can be traced back to some combination of Emperor, Immortal, Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem, and Enslaved, with some of the blacker Bathory and Celtic Frost stuff before them. Figure out which of those you like the best and it will open the door to hundreds more bands.

Shining (Swedish)

The album V: Halmstad is honestly what got me into black metal. I think it's a masterpiece and has everything a black metal album needs.... minus a raw production for the sake of it.

Yea but those are all demos. The official versions are on Apocalyptic Raids 1990 A.D. Get that one first.

And as critical as I am of Transilvanian Hunger, its still essential Darkthrone (to the OP, just make sure you get the ABITNS & UAFM first).

Everything else here is spot on though.

Oh in terms of classic black metal I always thought Ulver's 2 black metal albums were the best

Ulver - Bergtatt
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal

Was 80% sure I was being trolled when I saw Goat Penis
but I was wrong

I really like old school black metal, I really like Bathory's first album and I forgot to mention venom, but I really like them as well. I like some Dimmu Borgir, but really only like 4 songs, I can't get into anything else by them really...they make me laugh.
I prefer really raw, kickass black metal
kinda tired of symphonic dimmu poop

Satyricon.
No offense..
but probably NOT gonna take your advice on an extreme metal genre...

Oh, and even though he's usually wrong, take Indestructible's advice on this. Get at least Dark Medieval Times and Nemesis Divine from Satyricon.

Sacramentum, Dark Funeral, Impaled Nazarene, MidVinter, In Aeternum, Watain, Dawn, And people keep saying this isn't black metal, but I think it's pretty close, check out midian and cruelty and the beast by cradle if you haven't already. If you don't like cradle that's fine, but I think those albums are classics.
