Paul Di'Anno -- Asbury Park, NJ -- December 22nd, 2010

This was a lot of fun. I went with fellow board member Div. My ticket said the doors opened at 7, so I figured there would be an opener or tw oand Paul would be on around 9. So I called the place, the renowned Stone Pony venue, to ask what time he went on. There were 4 openers, Paul went on at 10:45. So me and Div decided to head over a little later than expected. We got there at like 9:30, Icarus Witch went on around 10. They were pretty cool, I hadn't heard them before, and they ended their set at 10:30.

Paul came in and got up on stage at 11, as Icarus Witch, who was acting as his band, began to play The Ides of March and went straight in to Wrathchild. It was a pretty mind blowing experience to be standing 10 feet from Paul Di'Anno as he sang his Maiden material. He was joking with the crowd a lot between songs and and telling stories and made it feel like a very one-on-one environment, which was cool. He gets a lot of crap from Maiden fans, but really he seemed like a cool guy who made a couple mistakes. He dedicated Remember Tomorrow to Clive Burr and started tearing up, saying Clive is one of this best friends and he gets down about his condition and such.

Overall, it was a great show. Lots of fun, definitely cool because who knows how many more times he'll be around and that 2010 was the first time he'd toured in the States in 15 years. Very glad I got to go to this.

Paul IS a cool guy. Maybe he screwed up partying too much like he is the first one to ever do that. I met the guy about 20 yrs ago and he was super cool a real down to earth guy.

Haha he was alright. Sometimes he was kinda just yelling, sometimes he was singing but it was almost deathy-singing if that makes sense. On Remember Tomorrow and Strange World where it's softing signing I thought he sounded pretty good. He was claiming he was kinda sick but who knows. He skipped lines here and there during songs to catch his breath.

But again, as a fan boy I didn't care how he sounded, it was fucking Paul Di'Anno.

I was married to Paul many years ago. He's always had issues with behaviour (to put it that way), and on top of that he took drugs (other than prescribed). He's one of those typical possessive/violent unstable men. He treated me horribly, but, paradoxically as it may sound, I don't believe he's a "bad guy" "deep inside". Just impossible to deal with. Nothing excuses his behaviour and nobody should ever put up with it; at the same time, I have no bad feelings. I even wondered for a moment whether I shouldn't meet him again after all these years, as he once insisted. However, I decided not to - and he went on to tell the local media: "Oh well, big deal, she wasn't that good in bed anyway". He told others I was awesome. Go figure, just the guy he is.
He spoke highly of me in his book - yet when I recall the physical abuse and psychological torture, the memory isn't the most pleasant...

I would be thankful if you'd be reserved in commenting; I'm sharing this out of good will, to clarify speculations on Paul I am reading throughout.

As far as Bruce, I haven't met him, but I've heard he's pretty arrogant. In any case, he is sane and safe to approach. Which can't be said of a significant number of the metal musicians... It is good, of course, they have their outlet in extreme music.


P.S. It is amazing that, after years of abuse, his voice has not abandoned him.
I've also been thinking that, in order to sound the way he does, one gotta be unstable (to put it mildly).
When saying that this or that musician sounds "insane", one rarely realizes how close to the truth that is...
