I'll be doing a best-of list for albums, EP's/Split's/Demo's, concerts and other things, but let's start off with an easy one:

BEST COMPILATION

http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/2589/l48c8fff215564a62919f3e.jpg

This Comp Kills Fascists Vol. 2

Put together by Scott Hull of Pig Destroyer fame, This Comp Kills Fascists Vol. 2 is another entry into the brilliant compilation series with some of the best grindcore, powerviolence, fastcore, etc. that you'll find today. This comp has 74 (Yes, 74) tracks from 19 bands, including legends like Lack Of Interest and Crom, but the newbies shine through as well, like Idiots Parade and Owen Heart. Don't listen to this comp while driving, you'll get a speeding ticket.

SONG OF THE YEAR

http://www.magazyngitarzysta.pl/images/media4i/f/f3/f3c/rotting_christ_aealo.jpg

Rotting Christ - Orders From The Dead (Diamanda Galas cover) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7ZmK6DKDs8)

A hauntingly amazing masterpiece featuring the vocals or Greek avant-garde master Diamanda Galas herself, Orders From The Dead transcends metal and music and is more akin to a story told around a fire thousands of years ago to Greek soldiers on the battlefield. It's fantastic.

Runner's up:

Lair Of The Minotaur - Let's Kill These Motherfuckers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5dmeTZQ4CQ)

Ghost - Ritual (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIkYt_cPJno)

TOP CONCERTS OF DA YEAR

HONORABLE MENTION:

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/500/27207633/Black+Cobra+l_0c2f8249393216015217ba8c108b.jpg

Black Cobra w/ Phobia, Howl

Imagine my surprise when I went to a grindcore show only to find one of the heaviest bands in existence. Even better: Black Cobra is just a two-piece! Phobia grinded minds and Howl was great, but nothing could compare that night. Consider me a new fan.

Weedeater w/ Black Tusk, The Gates Of Slumber

One of the heaviest shows I've ever experienced. Dixie is seriously a fucking madman live and I'm sure having a bottle of cough syrup to drink from helped things!

Highlights: God Luck and Good Speed, Wizard Fight

Envy w/ Trash Talk, Touche Amore, And So I Watch You From Afar

Trash Talk had one of the craziest pits I've ever seen, but Touche Amore was who I came to see, ASIWYFA surprised, and Envy floored me. Absolutely stunning, emotional, and brilliant.

Highlights: Touche Amore - Honest Sleep; Envy - Rain Clouds Running In A Holy Night

Coalesce w/ Black Breath, Touche Amore, Canyons

Converge canceling was the best thing to happen to this concert. I just can't fathom any band that could follow up a brilliant act like Coalesce. The vocalist collapsed from screaming multiple times. Heart. Touche Amore was great and Black Breath was excellent.

Highlights: The Comedian In Question, You Can't Kill Us All, Wild Ox Moan

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/45956425/Boris+Takeshi_blue.png

Boris w/ Russian Circles, The Life and Times

One of my favorite bands. This time around completely obliterated the first time I saw them. Aside from one big technical hiccup near the end of the set, it was the perfect concert. Michio Kurihara is God. Russian Circles is one of only two all instrumental bands that don't bore me out my mind.

Highlights: Korosu, 1970, Rainbow

Cannibal Corpse w/ 1349, Skeletonwitch, Lecherous Nocturne

It's not often that I'm absolutely stoked for every band on a bill, but this tour was a dream come true. Best set I've seen from Cannibal Corpse, Skeletonwitch was as vicious as ever, and 1349 successfully converted many metalheads into satanists. Brutal.

Highlights: Cannibal Corpse - I Will Kill You, Death Walking Terror, Devoured By Vermind; Skeletonwitch - Within My Blood, Crushed Beyond Dust, Beyond The Permafrost; 1349 - Sculptor Of Flesh

Nile w/ Immolation, Krisiun, Dreaming Dead, Marasmus

Three legendary death metal bands. Probably the best pure death metal show I've ever seen. Nile and Immo were especially mind-blowing. Great way to kick off the year.

American Carnage feat. Slayer & Megadeth w/ Testament

Nearly flawless performances and amazing sets from three of the biggest and most legendary bands in the game. Especially helps since Seasons in the Abyss is one of my favorite metal records of all time. Chillingly good concert.

Highlights: Slayer - Spirit In Black, Temptation, Aggressive Perfector; Megadeth - Five Magics, Poison Was The Cure, A Tout Le Monde; Testament - Dog Faced Gods, Practice What You Preach, D.N.R. (Do Not Resuscitate)

Couldn't ask for a better concert to cheer me up on the day of Dio's death. All the bands were amazing and the technicality for Mastodon and BTBAM was off the charts.

Enthroned w/ Destroyer 666, Pathology, Witchreign

If you told me four years ago I'd get a chance to see Destroyer 666 at one point in my lifetime, I would've never believed you. But it happened, and it was a (anti)religious experience. They didn't even play my favorite song, but every single song they did play was a highlight of the year for me. Enthroned closed the night with great classic black metal, Pathology was an enjoyable brutal death metal band, but D666 is where it's at.

Highlights: Australian And Anti-Christ, The Eternal Glory Of War, Black City - Black Fire

Vektor

For the longest time, Celtic Frost was far and away the best performance I'd ever seen. However, Vektor changed that. I've only gotten the feeling of "I can't believe I just saw that. That was legendary. That was life-changing." after a concert very often, but Vektor gave me the biggest dose of it of my life. Mind-blowing technicality, flawless execution, and the most exciting current band around today. Vektor is the future. And Vektor is perfect.

Ha. I've listened to Black Future. It's good. It's REALLY fucking good. But to say it's better than South Of Heaven, Beneath The Remains, Horrorscope or probably a few others I'm forgetting would be a joke. I could see Vektor making a serious run at those albums, but Black Future merely puts them in the game.

But, best thrash album since since 1985?
That's just fucking blasphemy.

Voivod- Rrroooaaarrr
Slayer- Hell Awaits
Slayer- Reign in Blood
Sodom- Obsessed by Cruelty
Sodom- Persecution Mania
Sodom- Agent Orange
Carnivore- Retaliation
Carnivore- Carnivore
Energetic Krusher- Path to Oblivion
Sabbat- Dreamweaver
Sabbat- History of Time to Come
Necronomicon- Escalation

That's just off the top of my head, and all those are in a completely different league of thrash.

Please, son. I've heard Reign plenty of times and all of those albums. Plenty of times. Influence is not the same as quality. Sure, Reign in Blood influenced thrash metal in an enormous way, but that in no way means that it is better than all that succeeded it. By this logic, the best metal album of all time is Black Sabbath's self titled. Sure, some may believe this, but I doubt you do. There would be no _____________ (insert metal album here) without Black Sabbath, therefore it is better. Someone is in serious need of a logic lesson. Please don't get condescending again, because I'm sure no one appreciates it.

Devo

Most people know Devo for the song "Whip It" but during their show, every other song was easily miles ahead of their biggest hit. "Uncontrollable Urge" was a great punked-out anthem, their newest "Don't Shoot (I'm A Man)" showed that they have only gotten better with age, and their insane cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones surpasses the original and is barely recognizable. 37 years later, and most bands still don't even come close to Devo.

Math the Band

Shitty hipster music made by stupid hipsters for stupid hipsters. Embarrassing, and they even fucked up an Andrew WK cover.

blessthefall

Whiny, emo-preachiness that is made to pander to scene kids at Hot Topic. Get off the stage and get some baggy pants.

Silversun Pickups

Okay on record, an absolute wall of muddy sound live. One of the most boring bands I've ever seen. Should've worn earplugs.

----

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/500/30636821/iwrestledabearonce++5.jpg

iwrestledabearonce

I have a friend who goes around and spouts 4chan memes in real life. Like, they say "lol u mad?" and "the cake is a lie" all the time, even to people that would never get it. They wear pedobear t-shirts and say "i can haz" all the time. It's nowhere near as embarrassing as seeing iwrestledabearonce live.

Whitechapel (I googled whitechapel and that picture came up, so I'm using it)

Whitechapel is actually the only band I've ever seen that is completely devoid of musical talent and anything that can make them enjoyable to listen to. I've seen a lot of bands before that overuse breakdowns to a point of unreasonableness, but Whitechapel makes it a fucking art. All their live show is pandering to the breakdown and gang vocals with the crowd. It's all just for show. All flash, no substance. Pablo Picasso couldn't make an uglier piece of art. The only band I've ever given a 1 rating to. The music equivalent of getting a needle shoved up your urethra. The cancer of extreme metal. The absolute worst performance I've ever seen.

Alright, nukkas. Here we go. 35 albums this year.

also: I genuinely liked all the albums I heard except for the bottom two.

35.

http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/6313/cephaliccarnagemisledby.png

Cephalic Carnage - Misled By Certainty

In a time where the grind scene is evolving and doing exciting things, Cephalic Carnage takes a giant step backwards by basically making a nu-metal/grindcore crossover. It's sad because Cephalic Carnage generally isn't that bad. Misled By Certainty was a huge miss, hopefully they'll get it back next year.

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/4248/c82d2b969abf.jpg

Waking The Cadaver - Beyond Cops. Beyond God

Yes, the title is grammatically incorrect. But I think Waking The Cadaver gets unfairly lumped in with deathcore, but they make no efforts to make a more brutal death metal sound. Unless something changes, this band will be an irrelevant joke within a few years. Even more so than they are now.

----

33.

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/1970/b003jla4n0.jpg

Circle of Dead Children - Psalms Of the Grand Destroyer

I hate it when competent bands make bland albums. This is a great album if you're beginning to get into the grind scene, but it's definitely nothing we haven't seen before. However, vocalist Joe Horvath remains one of the best extreme metal vocalists ever.

32.

http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/5372/cf1f601316cb591738fe5b1.jpg

Lustre - Glimpses of Glory

I can stomach heavy use of ambient/electronic/new age stuff in metal albums, but when a two-song album has half of the first song and all of the second as an Enya track? That's just a little too much for me. The stuff that isn't Enya is pretty good, though.

----

31.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/5020/sighsfhfrontcover.jpg

Sigh - Scenes From Hell

The production on this is particularly bad, but it'd actually help if it was a straight-forward black metal release. Sigh just might be too out there and cheesy with the Midi horns and saxophone bits in the songs. Make another Venom tribute!

Heathen - The Evolution Of Chaos

I know, I know. I just think it's nothing special and way too long. A decent effort and I'm glad Heathen is back, though.

----

29.

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/3822/arsisstarveforthedevila.jpg

Arsis - Starve For The Devil

Compared to how I first felt when I heard it, this album grew on me more than any other, but Arsis is still a shadow of their former selves. A little better than the previous disc.

----

28.

http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/1051/bb224cfe3d7d31f6f08984c.jpg

Witchaven - Terrorstorm

Solid blackened thrash metal from this unknown California band. Give them a few years and they could be huge.

----

27.

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/7263/lonelyavenue.jpg

Ben Folds - Lonely Avenue

Despite having probably my favorite Ben Folds song on it, the album wavers uncomfortably between really good piano/jazz/rock and douchey pop songs.

----

26.

http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/3249/b003g7dscq.jpg

Cardiac Arrest - Haven For The Insane

Heavy as balls death metal with hints of thrash, punk and doom. With better production, this could have been top 10 material.

Rotting Christ - Aealo

One of the most unique sounding albums I heard all year, thought I'd like for them to go back to making straight-up black metal. "Orders From The Dead" was the song of the year.

----

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/7502/dillingerescapeplan1267.jpg

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis

Huge step up over their last album, and they're as crazy as ever. A lot of good, catchy songs as well.

Unleashed - As Yggdrasil Trembles

The Motorhead of Viking Death Metal, Unleashed have made another immensely enjoyable, albeit safe, album.

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/1135/249659.jpg

My favorite black metal band released an album, and it's mounds better than the one before it. Not as good as their classic stuff, but it'll probably be the best we get for a while. :(

Rhapsody of Fire - The Frozen Tears of Angels

Rhapsody has returned to their cheesy, epic selves! It's all great, but "Danza Di Fuoco E Ghiaccio" is medieval fun at its finest!

Terror - Keepers Of The Faith

Great high energy stuff, it feels decidedly more "old-school" than their previous album. I don't think Terror has a bad album; one of the more consistently good newer hardcore bands.

----

19.

http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/6900/266113.jpg

1349 - Demonoir

A return to form after their last, more experimental album. This is classic 1349, although a bit on the short side.

----

18.

http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/6540/decrepit.jpg

Decrepit Birth - Polarity

A perfect way to get into the current death metal scene with lots of technicality strewn about. Maybe their best album?

Hellish Crossfire - Bloodrust Scythe

Although it's nothing new, it's fantastic. Awesmoe underground speed/thrash in the vein of Nifelheim and Destroyer 666. Looking forward to hearing more of their stuff.

16.

http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/128/immolationmajestyanddec.jpg

Immolation - Majesty And Decay

A big leap in quality from their last album. Old-school death metal at some of its current finest. Impossible not to headbang to.

----

15.

http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/5884/acidwitch.jpg

Acid Witch - Stoned

The most fun I had listening to an album in 2010. Every song is really memorable, and the organ solo's are never cheesy, just awesome! Amazing death/doom with psychedelic elements.

----

14.

http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/6664/61zsu8irzwl.jpg

Master - The Human Machine

Master is the best death metal band from the 80s still making music. Every track on this album is fresh and catchy as hell. Essential for everyone who likes extreme metal.

----

13.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6274/51urq78xnllss500.jpg

Ghost - Opus Eponymous

It was only a matter of time, right? The catchiest album of the year. Infectious brand of ultra-Satanic psychadelic rock. I wouldn't be surprised to hear this on Top 40 radio stations at one point!

----

12.

http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/6753/51yqibz5ol.jpg

Japanese hardcore mixed heavily with post-rock/metal. It's even better than it seems. Really emotion-driven songs that create fantastic soundscapes.

----

11.

http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/1808/lairoftheminoutaurevilp.jpg

Lair Of The Minotaur - Evil Power

Lair Of The Minotaur is the top band that embodies what it is to be "metal", and Evil Power, in that case, is the purest "metal" album ever released. You aren't a fan of the spirit of metal until you at least give this amazing death/thrash record a listen.

Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier

It seems that Iron Maiden has taken a small step back from all the lengthy epics from the past couple of albums and looked more to their classic past while making this. Awesome.

8.

http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/7576/blindguardianattheedgeo.jpg

Blind Guardian - At The Edge Of Time

Blind Guardian doesn't make bad albums, they only make great ones. This one is no different. And multiple songs about The Wheel Of Time makes me a happy boy.

----

7.

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/2092/highonfiresnakesforthedw.jpg

High On Fire - Snakes For The Divine

I think this is a big improvement over Death Is This Communion. A lot more memorable songs, and Bastard Samurai was a gamble that definitely paid off for the band.

6.

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/5002/wolvesatwarsendhammerlo.jpg

Hammerlord - Wolves At Wars End

Local band, but should be known worldwide. Every single track is memorable, catchy, fun, brutal, and most of all, METAL. Some of the best thrash you'll hear in the '10s.

The best death metal vocalist, fronting the best current old-school death metal band, has released the best death metal album of the '10s. It's classic Martin Van Drunen, 'nuff said.

Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones

One could argue that everything Tom G. Warrior has done since Celtic Frost's last reunion could be better than Celtic Frost's "classic" material. Triptykon's first album is no different. Extremely dark, brooding, and heavy.

Overkill - Ironbound

Bumped this up into the top 3 not only because it's a fun, fantastic thrash record, but also because it's probably the best album Overkill has done in a decade.

Nokturnal Mortum - The Voice Of Steel

This is a different band, yet again. There's so many unexpected sounds in this album that make it infectious. More progression and more folk sections do nothing but help this legendary band. Outstanding.

http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/5503/258422.jpg

Burzum - Belus

When Varg went to prison, he had lost all contact with the black metal scene which he had a hand in creating. That was the best thing to happen to it. Since his incarceration, black metal has gone all over the place, losing most of the mystique and qualities that made it, and Burzum in particular, so interesting to listen to. With his release, Burzum was basically released from a hyperbolic chamber and came back right where it left off. You'd have no idea that Belus wasn't from the black metal/Burzum glory days. This is what black metal needs to sound like, and it's only appropriate that one of the father's of black metal has created it.
