That's right, bitches. It's that time of year again! Starting it really early and giving you plenty of time to hammer down your lists to exactly what you want. Copypasta from last year:

1. You can only vote for albums (or EPs or splits) of newly-recorded studio material that was released in the United States in 2010. This should pretty much be a given at this point. edit: :I sigh okay you titty babies, instead of waiting to do them next year, you can do any release that came out this year even if it comes out in the US early next year.

2. You still need 10 albums to get full credit for your #1. If you vote for 5 albums, your #1 is worth 5.

3. The new multiplier is as follows: if an album receives three or more votes, each voter gives two bonus points to that album. For example, an album given a 3rd, 5th, and 10th by three different voters would earn 8 points for the 3rd, 6 points for the 5th, 1 point for the 10th, and an additional 6 points (2 times 3) for the voter quantity multiplier. Algebra can be fun when metal is involved.

4. Please refrain from posting your top 50 or whatever here, and from posting images of the albums you're voting for. Start your own damn threads for that, it'll just clog the page if you do it here.

5. There is no "metal only" rule, as decided by the Metal Setlists electorate. Diversify if you wish.

6. Have fun and don't be afraid to argue. That's the point of this whole charade.

7. SUPER SPECIAL ADDED JUST FOR 2010 RULE: If you post your list in this thread and want to change it, quote your list and then post the new one beneath it.

NOTE: If you've already started a thread of your own, still cast your vote in here or it won't count. I'm not gonna hunt and peck all over the board for your list.

Deadline is Jan. 1st!

I'll be coming back to this. A top 20 is easy this year. A top 10...not so much.

You might want to edit the original post to read "2010" instead of "2009" under Rule #1. Doubtless some n00b will see the typo and get confused.

Even though clearly this was intended as 2010, I still think this is an incredibly dumb rule. Should be according to first release date, regardless of where it is in the world. If something came out this week in Europe but won't until January in the US, it should still count.

It's gonna take me some time to get my list straightened out.

Plus, I'm not sure if I should include Electric Wizard and Deathspell Omega on this years list, or hold them off until next year, seeing as they're both going to be released in the US in January.

Gotta kinda agree with this request. :hmm: With all my work and stuff I'm not sure if I'll be able to easily sort through this stuff by that time. Hopefully when my break starts it should be easy, but you never know. Giving an extra week or so would be nice ;)

edit: noticing for the first time that I have 11.3k posts on this site, wow

I'm going to make the bold prediction that Triptykon isn't #1 on many lists but winds up #1 after the final tally.

I was never much of a Celtic Frost fan but I like every song on both Eparistera Daimones and Shatter.

I was really bored this afternoon and added up all the scores and votes... I officially have no life.

its very interesting to see how the votes are falling. There's a lot of ties since its still pretty early... although the top 4 have a pretty commanding lead. the numbers really start to have ties after number 5 so far.

I thought my list was going to be pretty set... then I heard the new albums by Atlantean Kodex, Hour of 13 and Royal Thunder. Now everything's been thrown out.

Even so, I think my list is going to be roughly 50% doom and 50% thrash. Those two sub-genres have comfortably outmuscled all of the others for me this year.

Groan, Overkill, Exodus, Death Angel, Cathedral, DoomDogs, Angelus Apatrida, Nomad Son are probably all dead certs. Royal Thunder looks most likely to mount a late charge. Other contenders will be Triptykon, Therion, Jex Thoth, Ed Kowalczyk, Voodoo Six, SweetKiss Momma, Ghost, Mojobone, then something from list reserved for further listening, which includes Negligence, Riotgod, Soulspell, Symphorce, Lonely Kamel, Tankard, Stonewall Noise Orchestra, Helstar, Tombstones, The Crystal Caravan, Seventh Void, Imagika, Marulk, Korzus, Myrath, Downspirit, Ereb Altor and Hellfueled.

I thought my list would have a lot more black metal than it ended up having. Three potential top 10 discs fell into the 11-20 range and plenty more just below that, so I only had three in the top 10 (top 5, actually). But I felt like I was mostly listening to black metal for about 9 months of this year.

There are a few 2010 releases I probably won't hear before the year is out, and would likely have been up for consideration in my list. Most surprising to most of you, I imagine, but Iron Maiden and Blind Guardian are two of them.

Some of the rest are Wino's acoustic album, Stone Sour, Alter Bridge, Suicidal Angels, The Graviators, Atheist, Crowned In Earth, Star One, Allen/Lande, Bride, Solna, Black Mountain, Kamelot, Firewind, Forbidden, James LaBrie, The Company Band, Spiritual Beggars, Pig Iron, Black Label Society, After All, Asteroid, Pearl, Pain of Salvation, Audrey Horne, Treat, Wuthering Heights, Alcest, Black Pyramid, Fireball Ministry, Solace, Black Water Rising and Orphaned Land....

Too much good shit comes out every damn year. All the whiners about good and bad years should be kicked in the head

instead of waiting to do them next year, you can do any release that came out this year even if it comes out in the US early next year.

And therefore anything that came out somewhere last year belong in last year.

As someone else said, this comes up every year, and every year the answer is the same, if it come out ANYWHERE in 2009 then it's a 2009 album.

I'm annoyed about it too, by the way. Heathen would make my list. But it's last year's album.

I had the same issue the year I wanted to include Tarot's Crows Fly Black. It came out in the January in most of Europe, but they'd released it in Finland late the year before.

Very cool. I listen to all types of music and great music is great music. If you had told me last year that Deftones would release the best cd I heard in 2010 I would have laughed since I hated their last cd. If you also told me a black metal jazz cd would be in my top 10 I would have though you were smoking crack. Or how I would randomly hear the 3rd part of a black metal trilogy with saxophones and love it so much I had to buy the other 2 cd's. Funny how that happens...

Not sure about the rules but if no one voting actually heard Heathen in 2009 and couldn't vote on it for last years poll, it should be eligible. Just my take...

Good call on Heathen. It's a great cd and deserves accolades. Now if it can just crack my Top 10...

Speaking of Top 10, I already know Deftones has a lock on my Top spot and some people on here won't even listen to the cd because it's Deftones and that's cool. I just want to point out that of the 10 albums I predict will finish in our Top 10, 5 of the worst songs (on decent albums) I heard all year reside on those albums. Not trying to bash anyone's picks, just pointing out what I heard and that every single song on the new Deftones cd are worlds better than every one of these songs to me. I'll start with the 3 A's:

Alcest - Solar Song - if someone came to you and said check out this great metal band and played that song for you, what would you think? This cd has a Crimson/Floyd feel to it but Top 10 of 2010? I just don't get it...

Agalloch - Ghosts of Midwinter Fires - U2 with shitty vocals? 5:00-6:00 is pretty cool. Can I get those other 8 min of my life back please? hahaha There are 20 incredible minutes on this cd but 20 min don't make a Top 10 cd to me. Needs more Into the Painted Grey type songs

Avantasia - Black Wings - When these guys are at their best, they're really good. These guys have talent but this song is terrible...

Iron Maiden - The Man Who Would Be King - The worst vocally structured song I heard all year... with some of the dumbest lyrics ever penned. Had they left this song completely off the cd, it might make my Top 10. I've never heard vocals forced into music like that before and it just ruins the song for me. The music actually has its moments...

And lastly...

Blind Guardian - Curse My Name - Um, has anyone seen or heard Swashbuckle? This should seriously be a Swashbuckle song. I can't take this cd seriously with this song on it. I consider myself very open minded musically but this song belongs in a Pirate Porn movie before it belongs on a Top 10 Metal Setlist album choice.

That being said there are some great songs on this cd and several of the others I covered but those 5 songs are so bad that there is no way I could even put Heathen behind any of them on my Top 10. I rate albums as a work of art, not just a few songs painted around filler.

Once again, just making a point. I'm sure people on here hate Fear Factory and some of my other picks and that's cool. That's what makes the year end tally so interesting. I'm hoping to discover some more gems like Ihsahn & Shining and rooting for both to creep into the Top 10...

So I honestly don't understand the conclusion on this "rule." You guys are saying that if an album came out this year in Europe or Japan, it can be included despite the fact it hasn't been released in the states yet, yet you guys insist on counting the Heathen album that came out in 2009.

I know that none of you care anymore at this point, but this is fucking retarded. If an album was originally released anywhere in 2009, it can't go on a 2010 list, even if it came out in the US in 2010. I'm trying to explain the logic behind my decision here, but every time I do, it sounds like I'm taking to a bunch of retarded 2nd graders. You guys can't just change the rules when it fits you personally.

Normally they don't. I think this time it's because it only came out in Japan in 2009, so no one here will have had any opportunity to hear it before 2010. Normally the issue is it's been released in Europe before the US, but Heathen wasn't even out here until 2010 either.

I think they are mostly talking about making an exception for the Heathen CD because it was released at the very end of 2009 in Japan only. It was released everywhere else in 2010. So there is almost no way anyone could have heard it, let alone voted for it in 2009. We should be allowed to vote for it in 2010. Otherwise, what you are saying has been the rule in previous years.

I like at least 3 of those 5 songs.

I like at least 3 of those 5 songs.

Just curious... which 3? I can find a few redeeming qualities in 3 of the 5. Just overall terrible songs to me.

I've listened to over 200 cd's this year and gave those particular cd's several listens due to all the accolades thrown at them on here. Some great songs but none of the cd's as a whole would crack my Top 20 honestly.

I'm wondering how many people voting even heard Periphery and think if they love this stuff I really think they would really like them. Kinda hard to influence people though...

And salty wang of death should win some kind of award if it's true. hahaha

Loganarchy's not wrong, but this happens every year. People simultaneously want to count stuff that isn't out yet in the States and stuff that wasn't out yet in the States in 2009.

Haha yeah, I figured that was probably the case.

I see about Heathen now. I guess I'm just kinda indifferent on the matter now, haha.

curse my name, I think its a good song.
black wings (not sure which one that is off the top of my head but there wasn't a song I disliked on the wicked symphony)
Solar song, I like this song by alcest.
and time to be king doesn't bother me... listening to it now to bring it to mind again, don't really see what the hate is all about.. not my favorite track on the album but its ok.

and I haven't heard agalloch so can't speak to that one.

That's cool. I didn't expect Curse My name because it's so weird but BG gets tons of love on here. I really like some of their stuff but after seeing Swashbuckle live I can only laugh at pirate music. Maybe it fits the context of the cd to some people and that's cool.

MPF just posted his list and we have 3 of the same Top 10 but I doubt any of those 3 make the Top 10 for the site. There are certainly no slam dunks like Crack The Skye this year so it should be interesting to see the final tally and how close the voting is.

Folky =/= "Pirate" Music. It is folky. Very folky. But that doesn't make it pirate music. It is medieval. I know this may seem like I'm splitting hairs here, but I really HATE the pirate gimmick, and Blind Guardian is most certainly NOT part of it. They've been doing folky acoustic songs on every album for the past 20 years.

I can buy that. I might even like it if I were drunk at a Ren Fest eating a turkey leg. It sounds like it's about overthrowing a King but the music is so campy I skip to the next track every time. Swashbuckle did a song live that had that exact sound and people were just laughing at them. I agree the gimmick is stupid and that band had no business opening for Death Angel.

No slam dunk? blind gardian has 10 votes, and currently is over 20 points ahead of its closest challenger, iron maiden. there's been like 15 people who have voted so far. blind gardian has been on like 2/3 of everyone's list.

Well, I'm trying to give this new Deftones a listen, even though I've never heard them do a thing that makes me think they're capable of a remarkable album. Just heard "Rocket Skates" and it's okay, but nothing special. Now on "Diamond Eyes" and it's no better. What's a great song on this album?

The funny thing is, I think the Alcest and Iron Maiden songs you mentioned are just about the best things on those two CDs. I know my opinion is far from representative of course, and I don't think either of those albums is top 25 material in 2010, but still....

It's hard to say 1 song. And ironically Rocket Skates is one of my least favorite songs even though it was their 1st single for the cd. What makes this cd so great to me is the flow from song to song. That and vocally and lyrically it fits masterfully. When I heard the opening track it was better than anything on their previous 2 albums so I was kind of surprised. When #3 CMND-CTRL kicked in I already knew this cd was better than anything they've done in years. You've Seen the Butcher after that has this crazy groove that I couldn't get out of my head then Beauty School is a great sing along type song. Then the flow from Sextape to Risk just floored me.

Some people listen to songs just waiting to hear the solo. Some are about the riffs and hate breakdowns of any kind. Others have actually said "Who listens to Maiden for the lyrics?" I can handle heavy vocals but when vocals and lyrics fit musically perfectly and it all flows, it's great to me and that's what this cd is. Like the soundscapes people describe with Alcest and Agalloch. The reason I pointed out those songs is because they lost me. Both cd's had moments but I either got bored or in Agalloch's case thought I was listening to a U2 poppy song then the vocals kicked in and it became pointless to me. Some people love it but it's just boring and weird to me at times. All 5 albums I referenced are good albums, just none are Top 10 material for me. I'm surprised you would like Solar Song. I really didn't get that song in any way. Maybe if I were tripping. hahaha

I've seen most of these songs live and they came off so powerful and beautiful. I've seen the rest played live on ustream and while it isn't "live" it still came across more powerful than on the cd. Here is the entire cd live:

Fear Factory and Overkill are fighting for my #2 spot and Fear Factory is winning. I didn't count it as overrated but I think it's getting hated on to be trendy by some poeple. Hah, yeah, they're definitely the odd band out. They're a good-ass post rock band that just tries to be as happy as possible; they describe their sound as 'everybody high fiving each other'.

Very cool list. I actually have to check a few of these bands out because I love all the ones I know. I really didn't expect anyone else to have Cloudkicker so I dropped them down a few notches. Currently Intronaut and Bison BC are fighting for my last spot and I'm thinking I might have to include Cloudkicker back in that group. This years Top 10 is my hardest to pick ever.

1. Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
2. Blaze Bayley - Promise & Terror
3. Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit
4. Ozzy - Scream
5. Scorpions - Sting in the Tail
6. Black Country Communion - Black Country Communion
7. Taylor Swift - Speak Now
8. Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe 2
9. Avantasia - The Wicked Symphony
10. Halford - Made of Metal

I'm thinking of doing my own top 10 type thread and reviewing them but for now I'll say that 1 - 4 were great, 5 and 6 were really strong, 7 - 9 had their moments, and 10 was a joke.

I've loved Agalloch for a number of years now and they're one of the best young bands out there. :bliss: Also, I heard other extreme metal albums this year but I just don't care for that style like I used to. So I didn't buy them like I did these ones so I didn't bother to include them anywhere in my top 10 (although maybe I shoulda bought something like HoF or Burzum rather than new Halford:hecho:).

That's what kills a number of the tracks. With that kind of music you have to accept that that kind of lyrical subject matter will be common so it doesn't bother me on tracks that have the hooks to back it up (Back to December, Better Than Revenge, Speak Now) but other tracks have nothing going for them vocally or otherwise and there the lyrics are unbearable (Mean, Dear John, Haunted). As I said before, half really strong, enjoyable pop, half overdone, boring, generic pop everyone's heard 1,000 times over.

I wouldn't say TS is better than Avantasia but I enjoy her record more. Avantasia is very good for its style but the whole symphonic power metal thing bores me after about half an hour of it. I do love that Klaus Meine duet though. Also, Halford is pure shit besides like four tracks. Expectations may be part of the reason I enjoy TS more. I don't expect a lot from a teenage pop-artist so I was pleasantly surprised when she came up with a number of good songs, I expect a lot from the "Metal God" so I was mightily disappointed when he released an album of almost pure filler.

Awesome.

I remember listening to that cd for the 1st time. The 1st 2 minutes of Salvation at the Barrel of a Gun we so great musically that I totally expected the typical vomitorium vocals to come in and ruin it for me. When the vocals kicked in I was shocked. I just didn't expect those vocals with that music and I sat and lisetned to the entire cd start to finish. Another band I would kill to see live.

10. Ghost- Opus Eponymous
When I first heard this I was mind-blown, but now after probably 20 listens it really looses it's 'wow' factor. Maybe everyone who said it was a flavor of the month record was right, but it's still pretty great.

9. Countess- Burning Scripture
Better than 90% of black metal I hear these days, especially considering bands like Ludicra actually make top 10 lists everywhere. This albums annihilates The Tenant in every way. They aren't really similar, but Ludicra's supposed to be black metal, so fuck you.

8. Christian Mistress- Opium & Agony
I don't like Devil's Blood at all. This record is what Devil's Blood should be. It's fantastic. That is all.

7. Goatpenis- Biochemterrorism
I sadly discovered this masterpiece in the last few months of 2010, although it was released at the beginning. Outstanding totalitarian skinhead war metal from Brazil, I can't get enough of it. I prefer it too their debut full length, although that seems to be a blasphemous belief.

6. Children of Technology- It's Time to Face the Doomsday!
I was sooooo excited for this since I've been listening to CoT for awhile and it lived up to my expectations perfectly. Badass speedmetal/crust and one of the best new metalpunk releases in years.

5. Funerot- And Then You Fucking Die, Man
One of the most unique thrash records I've heard. Very fitting for their final release. RIP

4. Abscess- Dawn of Inhumanity
I actually like this more than The Tomb Within. Abscess were goddamn amazing, although it's hard to be sad when their breakup meant the reunion of Autopsy. RIP.

3. Enforcer- Diamonds
I am totally in love with this album. Their other stuff does nothing for me. The odd Japan obsession is perfect, and it could easily have been released in 1985. They do hard rock/speed metal better than a lot of the genres originators.

2. Satanic Warmaster- Nachzehrer
I love all Satanic Warmaster, and this is some of the best. It's exactly what you'd expect from a SW release. The only records I'd say would be better would be the Aryan Blood split and if Werwolf were to rerecord Strength & Honor with real drums.

1. Blasphemophagher- For Chaos, Obscurity and Desolation
Unquestionably the best release of 2010, this is fact. Fuck Iron Maiden, Alcest, Electric Wizard, Enslaved and any other band people claim released good records this year, FCOaD beats them all. Blasphemophagher know how to make music, most people don't. This is a legendary release.

I've been here WAY too long, and the tastes of this board have evolved (both through new/changing posters as well as changing tastes of the remaining ones) to the point where like half the shit people post about is stuff I have absolutely zero interest. To be fair, a vast majority of the bands that you like that are popular among other members didn't have releases this year (even I think it's weird, it's pretty much just Avantasia, Maiden, BG, and a couple others) and are gonna be releasing next year, or just released in 2009 (or both). Not 100% sure of this list. It's recently changed and not sure if it will change back to what it was before.

1. Soilwork - The Panic Broadcast
2. Blind Guardian - At the edge of time
3. Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare
4. All that Remains - For we are many
5. Iron Maiden - The Final Fronteer
6. Avantasia - The Wicked Symphony
7. Bullet for My Valentine - Feaver
8. Disturbed Asylum
9. Alter Bridge - AB III
10. Alcest - Ecailles de Lune

damn that was hard. I can't believe in the past few weeks Blind Guardian has moved ahead of Avenged in my list. Avenged is one of my favorite bands and Blind Guardian is new to me.

I know its kind of all over the place and will please some and piss others off... oh well, there it is.

how do you say that and then not post a picture of Jar-Jar :confused:Because Jar-Jar isn't the one who said it.

EDIT:

PADME : (Cont'd) ...I am sorry for my deception, but under the
circumstances it has become necessary to protect myself. Although we do not
always agree, Your Honor, our two great societies have always lived in
peace...until now. The Trade Federation has destroyed all that we have
worked so hard to build. You are in hiding, my people are in camps. If we
do not act quickly, all will be lost forever...I ask you to help us...no, I
beg you to help us.

PADME drops to her knees and prostrates herself before BOSS NASS. There is
a gasp from CAPTAIN PANAKA, HIS TROOPS, and the HANDMAIDENS.

PADME : (Cont'd) We are your humble servants...our fate is in your hands.

Slowly, CAPTAIN PANAKA and his TROOPS bow down before the GUNGAN COUNCIL.
Then the HANDMAIDENS, ANAKIN, and finally the JEDI. The GUNGANS are puzzled
by this. BOSS NASS begins to laugh.

BOSS NASS : Yousa no tinken yousa greater den da Gungans.. Mesa like dis.
Maybe wesa bein friends.

It's really great, and Piano-only to boot. Which works quite well.
