I googled it. Surtr is the leader of the fire giants. Norse mythology, of course.

Exactly. I think their last two were both in our top five. Just seeing if any dummies would take the bait. ;)

For many bands, consistency of this level is the kiss of death, but for Amon Amarth it's what makes them great. Same with Unleashed. :fist:

Hel yeah (lololol). Definitely going to be one of my top 3 albums for next year. Amon Amarth have been one of my favourite bands since I was ~13. Stoked to hear new material, and then see it played live. They sold out the past 2 times I saw them, looking forward to a packed venue once again.

They're a ridiculously over-the-top, cheesy band, so I don't want a subtle cover a la With Oden On Our Side. I want a goddamn muscled man fighting something beastly.

Or maybe another globe.

What is Surtur

In Norse mythology, Surtr (modern Icelandic Surtur, sometimes Anglicized Surt) is the leader of the fire giants in the south, the ruler of Muspelheim, the realm of fire.

http://www.monstropedia.org/images/4/4e/Surtur.gif

http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/314/3/d/surtr__fire_of_ragnarok_by_samburley-d32k1k9.png

"Surtur is the one so named who stands on M๚spell's border, guarding the land. His sword is flaming and as the world ends he will go out, make war against and triumph over the gods. And he will burn the whole world with fire"

The Pagans MC also use Surtr for their club symbol.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_nVSrF0LLSCk/SlJ1umd775I/AAAAAAAAAiQ/AjKRzBXnZFE/s400/pagans.jpg

There is also a doom band called Surtr:

Surtr are a duo of French doom addicts that formed in 2009 so they are a extremely new band but they already have a demo that is making its way around the doom community.

If you're going to be in the city any time soon, I'd recommend going to the Warfield box office. They sell Regency tix there without service fees. For me, it's actually cheaper to take BART into the city and buy them there, as opposed to paying convenience fees.

Well, I'm no too sure I'm going to be in the city any time soon. But my sis goes to USF so maybe something of that sort can be arranged, but I'm not too worried about at the moment. I need to get my Protest the Hero tickets and Nevermore/Symphony X/Powerglove tickets first.

Fear Factory was the headliner on that date. I don't like them at all and I don't really wanna see Amon Amarth play a short set. They're too epic for that.

But dude, holy shit two full sets are gonna be amazing. Now I finally have an excuse to buy and wear a Viking helmet on a Friday night. :D

I think I can finally see Amon Amarth live again if that tour comes close :D I've seen them four times and was pretty happy with that, considering the set on their headlining tour in 07 was just about the greatest AA set I've ever seen and nothing they've played since, IMO, has come close to beating it.

However, three hours gives them a lot of time to play some awesome stuff. Consider me in.

Ok Cool. I heard it also could have been WOOOS. but the new album would make a lot more sense since that is what they are touring behind. But the only thing is that the first set would need some more songs unless the 2nd set is a lot longer, or Surter Rising is 90 minutes long.

True, but that's also assuming that both sets will be 90 minutes...3 hours is A LOT of time for a band to play. Most jam bands don't even do that.

The Black Crowes, The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule... in actual fact, most jam bands DO play 3 hour shows quite often. Mule sometimes do whole tours of 3 hour shows for several months.

In the case of Amon Amarth though, I think we can be pretty sure the new album will not be 90 minutes long. This will turn out like a lot of shows with one set being a complete album and the second set being hits etc.

Set 1 - 60 minutes
Break - 20-30 minutes
Set 2 - 75-90 minutes.

It'd probably be a small tour thing, not hitting a lot of cities. But at this point I'm surprised they're doing it in America, and not just NY, LA etc. And huge credit for them if they go forth with that long of a set for all the dates.

I'd like to see them live for once, hoping for a NYC date.

If only other bands can learn from AA and start doing 3 hour sets.

Meh.

Don't get me wrong, this is awesome, but that's precisely because it's rare. I'd be bored to tears 3 hours into a set from a ton of bands, even ones I love.

The only time i've ever seen a band do a 3 hour set was when I saw Rush last summer.

You've got to be a band capable of three hours of material first!

Besides, this isn't going to be a 3 hour set, so the comparison is irrelevant ;)

It'd probably be a small tour thing, not hitting a lot of cities. But at this point I'm surprised they're doing it in America, and not just NY, LA etc. And huge credit for them if they go forth with that long of a set for all the dates.

I'd like to see them live for once, hoping for a NYC date.

They've headlined in the city 3 times already

Evening with shows don't have openers...True. I just didn't know if every date on this tour was supposed to be an "Evening with..." show or not.

With the apparent 3 hour set time, do you really care if there's an opener?See above. If the Cleveland show is an "Evening with..." show, then no. Three hours of Amon Amarth would be just dandy. :D

I know, I've just never made it to any of those shows, hopefully I can make the one above.

Fear Factory was the headliner on that date. I don't like them at all and I don't really wanna see Amon Amarth play a short set. They're too epic for that.

They played the same set as all the other nights of the headlining tour. You missed out, woodbro chillson.

AA won't sell out the ballroom

I don't think they'll get close.

I still buy all my songs off of iTunes or amazon. That's just for songs that are unavailable for purchase. Live or unreleased material.

Besides, it's not the best quality. It's just to have a copy for my iPod/iPhone.

So right back atcha. :finger:

some great songs on it, but overall not brutal enough, the more moodier\melancholic songs are great though

I can't get over how amazingly epic this tour is gonna be. Is this album a good one to do in full? Personally, I'd rather see With Oden on our Side in its entirety.

I'm with you on this one. 'The Last Stand of Frej' and 'Wrath of the Norsemen' are probably my favourites after first listen.

Another solid track. It just kind of caught me off guard as I was expecting something in a more similar vein to 'Hermod's Ride to Hel' at first.

A few listens in now... I am really starting to appreciate this album. Amon Amarth can put another notch in the belt.

ive always liked their more melodic sound anyways but the fast songs are freaking awesome. i cant wait for this tour. i also need to give this a few more listens.

Live Without Regrets definitely strikes me as an older AAish song.

It's definitely a different feel. AA didn't stray too far from the path with Twilight compared to Oden, but they definitely explored some new, more melodic territory here.

I think this, War of the Gods, and Destroyer of the Universe will probably sink in over time as the 3 played live most often from this album. For Victory or Death is great.

The fact that Amon Amarth covered System of a Down makes me laugh and when I listen to it, it makes me laugh. But when actually listening to it, it's a really good cover.

Johan did a karaoke version of it in 70,000 Tons, which I assume is why they covered it for the iTunes version

Really? Thats badass. I really wanted to go 70,000 Tons, it took off less than a hour away from my house :/. I'm saving up for next year, hopefully it will be just as good, if not better.

Finishing up my first listen. It's very good, but i don't like quite as much as the last two records. My fave tracks as of right now are Tock's Taunts: Loke's Treachery Part II, Slaves Of Fear and A Beast Am I.
