Ok: I'm a death metal guy. I haven't really gotten into Black Metal before, just Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse, which I think is fucking brilliant. I know Immortal is a huge, influential band for black metal, and early next year they are doing a rare US tour of only 6 stops. One of the stops is only a couple minutes away from where I live in Chicago...

Has anyone seen them? Are they good live? And (sorry for the noobish question): are there mosh pits at all in a black metal show? I assume not, just wondering.

If you have $50+ to spend, yes.
And yeah, there was a mosh pit at a fucking Portal show I went too. People mosh to anything.

Oooh its $35... not $50, but far from my usual $20 concert... I'm on the fence

Okay, I just listened to the album Sons of Northern Darkness, front to back, no stopping.

Holy. Shit. THAT WAS AWESOME! Beautiful, also. Their song structure is superb. I also read andrew_metalhead's concert review of them earlier this year (http://metalassault.com/Live_Reviews/040210_Immortal.php) and they sound CRAZY live. Pretty sure I'm definitely going to this concert now.

I know you'll love At the Heart of Winter. It was the first black metal album I ever got, and it converted me

I'd pay $35 to see that in person.

Except there's not a whole lot of that, but way more of this:

For that, I would pay less.

Of course you would.

Anyways, good call jd091 with SOND. Easily Immortal's best album. ATHOW is a great second choice, but you should know it doesn't have as much variety as SOND. You'll see what I mean when you hear it. Pure Holocaust is also worth getting, but be forewarned, it is VERY VERY different from 00's Immortal. Very lo-fi. Then again, it's no more lo-fi than In The Nightside Eclipse, so you'll probably love it.

I'll agree with all of this, but I honestly believe that there are no bad Immortal albums. It's just that they were so fucking good then so fucking average...then good again.

1. Sons of Northern Darkness
2. At the Heart of Winter
3. Battles in the North
4. Pure Holocaust
5. All Shall Fall
6. Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
7. Blizzard Beasts
8. Damned in Black

First four are total goddamn classics that every metalhead should own. Last four are still worth hearing.

What the hell is with the site and loving SoND that much.
I mean, it's awesome. But c'mon. It's not at all as good as their black metal classics, and doesn't touch At the Heart of Winter.

6. Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism

Only one I'd put higher. I think it's a tie between SOND and ATHOW, but Mysticism is always third or fourth.

Kinda surprised to see this one where it is.

We like our album songwriting like we like our harems, diverse and different speeds and colors. :eyes:

Thank you, I'm glad someone else feels the same way.

Sons is totally fucking awesome though.
