So I was driving home from work yesterday listening to Liquid Metal on Sirius (which I rarely do, but that channel actually has some good shit from time to time), and they were doing this thing called the Devil's Dozen - the top twelve thrash songs of all time, as voted on by listeners through their web site, and with a few opinions of the staff at Liquid Metal thrown in for good measure I guess. So here is the list:

Metallica - Battery
Megadeth - Peace Sells
Slayer - Angel of Death
Anthrax - Caught in a Mosh
Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Overkill - Hammerhead
Testament - Into the Pit
Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
Sepultura - Inner Self
Death Angel - Voracious Souls
Sodom - Nuclear Winter
Voivod - Ravenous Medicine

Discuss.

I havent listend to Testament alot. I do not listen to Nuclear Assault or Kreator. All I have for thrash is Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Testament, Overkill, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies and Toxic Holocaust.

Judging by the songs, the voting system obviously only let you pick certain songs.

Meh, Evildead was too short-lived to appear on a list like this.

I agree with you on Destruction, though. I would have picked either "Release from Agony" or "Bestial Invasion". Maybe "Curse the Gods".

Curse the Gods is my favorite song by them. The intro is so haunting and chilling. I wish they had of played that intro when I saw them perform back in 2009 :(

I saw them back in the late 80's - right after Release from Agony came out. Somewhere I still have a dollar bill which was signed by Schmier. I wasn't writing down setlists back then, but I'm reasonably sure they played Curse the Gods, and I would think they would have played the full intro for it.

You saw Destruction in the 80s? More power to you.

I forgot to mention when I saw Destruction in 2009 some douche stole Mikes Guitar so they had to cut there set from 19 songs to 13 :flame:

But in all honesty I can't really complain considering that it was at a really small venue where local highschool band shows are taken place and the fact that tickets where only 8 bucks at the door

They could've chosen a better Megadeth song. Rattlehead would've been much more suitable for this list.

I like that there's no repeating artists, but the only songs I'd agree with are Pleasure to Kill and Nuclear Winter. Some of those bands definitely deserve to be on there, but with better songs.

Also, no Destruction is a crime. I would have probably picked Curse the Gods or Total Desaster, and put it in the first slot.

Some of those bands definitely deserve to be on there, but with better songs.:agree: Nuclear Winter and Pleasure to Kill are the best. I also like the choices for Slayer and Exodus. Slayer may have more awesome / heavy songs, but Angel of Death really is their signature track, and it's very thrashy (which is the purpose of the list, after all). Ditto for Bonded by Blood. I pretty much agree with the Sepultura and Anthrax choices, too - although I may have chosen "Beneath the Remains" or "Antisocial", but whatever. Close enough.

Also, no Destruction is a crime. I would have probably picked Curse the Gods or Total Desaster, and put it in the first slot.Agreed, as discussed above (although I'm not sure about the #1 slot part :snivel:).

My favorite Thrash bands are Destruction, Stone, Kat, Sabbat (the UK one, but the Japanese band is pretty good too), and Holy Moses.

Assassin, Annihilator, Sadus, Sacred Reich, Hallows Eve, Coroner, and Tankard are all really good, too.

That's a pretty good list. None of the songs listed are my absolute favorite by any of those bands with the exception of Into The Pit. It could be better, but it's not too bad.

When you do a list this specific, you can't do it one band entry per list. There are barely 10 listenable thrash bands out there and their best songs aren't even that good.

Here's a top 20 off the top of my head. (not necessarily favorites)

1. Slayer- Angel of Death
2. Venom- Witching Hour (the first ever should always be #2.)
3. Metallica- Creeping Death
4. Anthrax- Caught In A Mosh
5. Dark Angel- The Burning of Sodom
6. Slayer- Raining Blood
7. Metallica- Battery
8. Megadeth- Holy Wars...The Punishment Due
9. Overkill- Elimination
10. Kreator- Riot of Violence
11. Metallica- Metal Militia
12. Megadeth- Rattlehead
13. Slayer- Chemical Warfare
14. Exodus- Strike of the Beast
15. Slayer- At Dawn They Sleep

In keeping with the 'one song per band' thing of the original:

1. Ride The Lightning - Metallica
2. Thanx For Nothin' - Overkill
3. Re-Animation - Sacrifice
4. Behind The Crooked Cross - Slayer
5. Practice What You Preach - Testament
6. Inner Self - Sepultura
7. When The Sun Burns Red - Kreator
8. Opiate Of The Masses - Heathen
9. Good Mourning/Black Friday - Megadeth
10. The Organization - Death Angel
11. Stranded In Hell - Nuclear Assault
12. Merciless Death - Dark Angel

Picking Voivod over Sadus and Dark Angel is blasphemy to me. Certain Death by Sadus and Merciless Death are two of the 5 best thrash songs ever penned.

Creeping Death is not thrash in any way to me and Antisocial... really? I'd pick Among the Living or AIR from Anthrax personally.

Not a hateful list overall. Metal Militia has always been my favorite Metallica song so I'd choose that and kinda agree with Destruction and would definitely choose a diff Sepultura song. Escape to the Void, Beneath the Remains or Arise.

I know they're considered Death metal but Death - Scream Bloody Gore and Morbid Angel - Maze of Torment are pretty fucking thrash too

No way. The drums are barely sped up at all. Whiplash and Fight Fire with Fire are thrash. Creeping Death is barely above normal tempo.

Jamming out some Sacred Reich now. Love their early stuff

Actually, I agree with you. I fucking love Vektor.

I called Manks silly because he simply listed every track from the album - in order - as his list, and it was a "Best Thrash Songs OF ALL TIME" list. :finger:
