Would any of you happen to know bands with a jazzy, but metal style? An example of what I'm looking for is Lye by Mistake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jxrxweeXUY). I'm not looking for something like Atheist. I'd like more emphasis on the jazz side, but with progressive metal elements.

Exivious is the perfect band for you:

I haven't listened to it, but I know there's a band from Norway called Shining (not to be confused with the Swedish black metal band Shining) that has an album called Blackjazz or something. That might be what you're looking for.

I love Shining. Blackjazz is one of my top 10 for 2010. But I don't think that is what he would want to hear. It's not very fusion-y. It is exacly what the album title implies. Black Metal and Jazz.

Exivious on the other hand features member of Cynic and Textures making the perfect Instrumental Jazz Fusion Metal album. It makes me so sad that they broke up this year only after making one album.

You need Naked City, just look them up on youtube and listen!

Thank you for the suggestions. I checked out Naked City and it wasn't really what I was looking for. Same for Shining, although they are good. Exivious is exactly what I want, but I forgot to mention in my original post that I already know them. So, if there are any other bands like Exivious or Lye by Mistake, I would love to hear them! I have looked and was unable to find anything that resembled their music.

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but some interesting jazz-metal hybrid outfits...

Yeah, maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but these guys are fantastic.

EDIT:

They might not really be quite what you're looking for, but Leprous are worth checking out. They've certainly got their fair share of Jazz influence.

If you like Estradasphere, you may also like Secret Chiefs 3 (which includes some of the folks from Estradasphere), and also Diablo Swing Orchestra. I think DSO and Estradashpere are very similar in their sound.

Also, if you like DSO, you may want to check out Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum and / or Stolen Babies.

FYI, many of the above-mentioned bands are (or have been) signed to Brooklyn's The End Records.

Coming from a different angle, if you like Post-Metal, there is a band called Irepress that fuses a great deal of jazz into their sound, and it's pretty interesting stuff if you're into Post-Metal to begin with.

Ohio State's music library had a copy of Blackjazz, which I checked out and burned. :rocker:

These are nice. The Haken song sounds pretty cheesy for the first couple minutes, but grows out of it.

Haken are quite awesome, but I've found I have to be in the right mood to listen to them.

Also! Kicking myself for forgetting them since they're one of my favorites -- Madder Mortem:
