So I've been sort of obsessed lately with bands from other parts of the globe. And I lot of the most exciting stuff I've found has been from Japan.

In terms of metal, they have Dir En Gray, who are amazing. I don't think I've seen anyone here mention them, but they seem right up metalsetlists' alley. Progressive without being overly fussy, full of variety, and featuring one of the most dynamic vocalists in the biz -- shifting between black metal shrieks, death growls, high pitched melodic singing reminiscent of Queensryche, and sometimes just batshit crazy insanity: as in the end of Red Soil.

I saw these guys a couple years ago. They put on a really good performance. The only problem was the amount of weird anime loving kids in the crowd.

LMAO.

All girl Japanese thrash/core. Horrible vocals. Nice bass and drums.

Good japanese music that I know:

Boris (Doom/Drone/Sludge/Psychadelic/Ambient/Noise/God-like music all-around)
Coffins (crushing old-school doom/death)
Envy (good metalcore meets Explosions In The Sky)
X-Japan (biggest metal band from Japan ever)
Fastkill (ultra-ultra-ULTRA fast thrash metal)

and Peelander-Z. If you don't like Peelander-Z, you hate life.

Recently fell in love with Dir En Greys music, mainly for the reasons stated above. They are really unique with their sound. Especially Kyo, his range and ability to change vocal styles so quickly is remarkable. The entire band is extremely tight live. But I do agree that there are way too many fangirls at their concerts...>.<

'sup I've been into DeG since like 2006 or something welcome to the party. ;) They're kind of weird though, not sure if they're actually "right up this board's alley".

Other best japan bands would be Boris and X Japan. :bliss:

edit: and loudness, obviously

edit 2: and the song Mr. Roboto

Dir en Grey are okay, not crazy about them. I don't get the fuss over Kyo, to be perfectly honest. I went through a time where I was huge into J-rock. I'd much rather have D'espairsRay any day.

As far as other great Japanese bands go:

Sigh, Gallhammer, and Sabbat (obviously a different band from the British one).

Mono, anyone? Nothing distinctly Japanese about them since they're instrumental, but they're fucking great.

They're good enough, though not very metal at all, but I'm not exactly in love (though I guess they're better if you're someone who really loves post-rock-esque stuff).

On the subject of less metal stuff, my probably favorite modern jazz musician Hiromi Uehara happens to come from Japan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqVDIFaCK8U&feature=related She's pretty awesome if you like fusion. :bliss:

Coffins (crushing old-school doom/death)

Here's some more of my favorite recently discovered Japanese awesomeness (more punk/less metal):

The Back Horn

Thee Michelle Gun Elephant

A friend of mine was just in Japan, and I had him bring me back 5 CDs by the Back Horn and Thee Michelle Gun Elephant. They cost $178. Shit in Japan is fucking expensive.

I guess I was thinking that enough of us on the board are also weird. A place which can get behind Tegan & Sara AND Pig Destroyer in equal measure is a place that should know about Dir En Gray.

I saw Boris live a couple of months ago and they bored me senseless. :(

I used to love Loudness! I had two of their albums on vinyl back in the 80s. Have no idea where they are now...

I saw Melt Banana open for Tool, that might be up your alley (with the other stuff you listed as liking).

Eh... Japan's not the best for metal.
