figured there might be some people on here who care.
GJ have been doing some random small, kinda secret shows in the NY area lately labeled as "Sons Modern Parties", as Sons Modern is their booking agency. They are always labeled as special guest, but everyone knows theyre showing up.
anyway, they have actually been slowly putting out material finally over the past 2 months, with some 7'' singles and digital d/l's of new songs. Most of them are really good...only one i dont like is Jesus Glue.
so tonight...they played only some of their slower, non-heavy material...
Must've Run All Day
Ape Dos Mil
Trailer Park Jesus
Convectuouso
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence
Losten (EYEWTKAS Secret Song...with new full band instrumentation)
Wolf Egg (new song)
GJ sounded great. MUCH better than last year's drunken hot mess of a show at maxwell's. Everyone was tight, Darryl didn't take any verses off, and he sounded nice and clear. I LOVE the idea of a set of only slower songs, def. caught everyone off-guard. Really nice to not here so many of the songs we've all heard a million times (siberian kiss, etc.)
wolfegg kicked ass. very ominous...daryl was way into this song. Most crowd interaction the whole night. Can't wait to hear the recorded version.
but yes, i do think it's bullshit to play only six (seven-ish?) songs at these secret shows. I get the point (it's a Sons Modern party, not a proper GJ show), but it's very frustrating at the moment the show ends. the crowd was way into the show tonight, and they just abruptly killed the vibe by pulling the plug after wolfegg. oh well, the best buy theatre show on 1/1 will be a full set so it's cool i guess.
but yeah, tonight was awesome. it was my wife's first time seeing GJ and it was cool that they did only slower stuff, as she isn't into heavy music. Daryl's stage presence bothered her (understandable) but she dug them otherwise.
