Hey y'all. Does anyone know of any good Latin American metal or punk or hard rock bands that make use of traditional Latin music styles (salsa, flamenco, merengue, mariachi, etc.) in their work? Or Caribbean (calypso)? I've been trying to find some, but coming up mostly empty. So far, I only know about Des+Karadas (excellent punk/flamenco from Spain) and some band from Trinidad called Skid"Nevely that sounds like Blink 182 with steel drums.

Thanks. It's actually pretty easy to find bands singing in Spanish -- there's tons of metal in South America, say. What I'm interested in is metal/punk/rock bands that use traditional instruments or melodies or rhythms in their music. The way, say, Orphaned Land uses traditional middle-eastern sounds in their music.

Flametal are metal/flamenco fusion. They're really good at both styles but I'm not a fan of how they combine them. Still worth a listen, though.

The name escapes me right not, but theres an instrumental on the Chaos AD record be Sepultura that could fit with what your looking for, its good stuff. It was the first thing that came to mind when I read the question!

Rodrigo y Gabriela?

They met when they both joined a speed metal band but decided to go to their own thing.

Their cover of Orion live with Rob on bass is sex.

Puya and Ankla are the best examples.

you could say Ill Nino, but the only thing they;'ve done that's worth mentioning is their cover of Faith No More's Zombie Eaters, and the original will forever be better.

I love flamenco. My faves are Strunz & Farah and Lara & Reyes. Ottmar Liebert has some good stuff as well.

Never really thought to look for a Flamenco/Metal combo band.

Probably a bit more towards the prog/power side of the board than what you're looking for, but I've always thought Angra pulled this off really well. Examples:

Cool stuff, y'all. I'm digging Puya and Ankla and that first Angra track (although you're right, Maiden33, it does strain my tolerance for power metal ;)). (I think I only knew Angra before from their acoustic live cover of "Wasted Years.") Temblor seems all right too.

Brad, I had turned up Flametal before with a google search, and I agree with you -- they're skilled players, but pretty damn cheesy.

I knew a little about Rodrigo y Gabriela too. They are fantastic. I hadn't heard the Orion cover, which is nice.

The Sepultura song is pretty laid back. Not bad.

Thanks for all the help. :fist:

Puya is excellent. Exactly what I was hoping to find. Thanks!
