This was Day 1 of the Forward to the Apocalypse fest. The lineup for Friday night was:

American Cheeseburger
Thou
Sons of Tonatiuh
Man Will Destroy Himself
Kowloon Walled City
Batillus
Black September

As you can probably see, I didn't see all of these bands. I had to leave early, unfortunately, and the fest was 45 min behind schedule.

The venue is a DIY art gallery with several rooms, one of them with a stage at most 1 foot off the ground. Not nearly enough for stagediving. The sound was surprisingly very good, though.

Anyways, while waiting for the first band, my brother and I ate at this shithole/hole-in-the-wall barbeque restaurant called Daddy Dz's that was literally 10 feet away on the other side of the street. I had heard tons of things about this place and I was not disappointed. Best bbq I've had in my LIFE. Manks, this place will give your precious Kansas bbq a run for its money.

On to the bands...

Black September is a blackened death metal band from Chicago. Mother of Slayer these guys were amazing. Very tight, heavy. The vocalist was a pregnant woman w/ monstrous screams (or maybe she was fat, I dunno). They played for about 15-20 min.

Batillus took about 30 min to set up and then roared their way onto stage. Their deafening roar pushed me into the back room. They were just too goddamn loud. After two songs, I realized that it was still too loud for me and I went into the merch area and picked up a magazine. The volume was perfect here. All in all, I thought these guys were good, but I would never listen to them on album.

Kowloon Walled City started playing 15 min later and played for a solid 25-30 min. These guys were awesome. I've listened to Gambling On The Richter Scale several times in the past but I couldn't tell you what songs they played. Their second-to-last song was really long, though, and pretty slow.
When they played slow and doomy, they beat Batillus at their own game, and when they were heavy and sludgy, well, they just knocked my socks off (I don't regularly say that phrase). They were very loud, not as much as Batillus, but pretty bad. However, I decided to stay up front nevertheless.

We hit the road after this. Can't wait until tonight :horns: Phobia (who I may not be able to see :(), Maruta, and Wormrot.

I'm not 100% but I'm gonna say they played the first five songs from Gambling. They definitely played Diabetic Feet in new York a couple of days ago.
