Opeth mainman Mikael Akerfeldt has exclusively told Classic Rock that his long-mooted project with Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree is now well under way.

"I got together recently with Steven at his house, and we wrote a new tune straight away," says Akerfeldt. "Of course, with the two of us involved it was 10 minutes long. And it came out so well that we started working on a second one as well."

However, it now appears that Dream Theaterís Mike Portnoy will not be involved, as was expected.

"To be honest, thereís just no room for drums on what weíve done so far. I called Mike up, and he was cool about it. Heís got so much going on anyway, and Iím sure we will work together in the future."

Itís still early days for the as yet unnamed project, but expect an album next year. And thatís also the plan for Opeth.

"Right now weíre on a break. But Iím writing new songs, and we hope to have an album out in 2011."

According to posts on Porcupine Tree's official Twitter page, the working title for vocalist Steve Wilson's collaboration with Opeth frontman Mikael Akerfeldt is Storm Corrosion:

"Don't expect any metal on this one. Nothing like Damnation either, something new and pretty experimental. Coming on nicely so some time in 2011 for sure."

Possibly for album 2 Pornoy will join the fold, but for this album it's going to be pretty acoustic and some experimental electronic.

I'm glad Portnoy isn't in this. He's a great drummer, but very over the top.

Yeah I know, the only reason I posted it was because Mikael confirmed that an Opeth album would come out next year along with this super album.
