View Full Version : Best metal guitar tone evar?

I'm talking about pure tone. Not skill or style (except where it is a factor in the actual tone). I know this is a totally objective (?), but I don't think it has been asked on this site yet. We could do nominations and a poll or just do it end-of-year album list style. Or just discuss, I don't give a fuck breh.

Drum and bass also welcome, but if you wanna talk about vocals, we've been through it before so keep it out of here.

With a gun to my head I'm saying Ride the Lightning.

Seconded on Ride The Lightning.

I'd have to really think about this to just pick one, but the first that comes to mind is Nile's newest album. It sounds like a chainsaw cutting of a helpless child's arms.

The best tone I can think of right now is John Petrucci's live tone. Insanely heavy.

Priest's modern guitar sound is one of my favorites as well.

Oh, and the guitars on Heathen's new record sound awesome as well.

Me too.

But I'm going for The Number of the Beast. It taught twelve-year-old me, a longtime casual "hard rock" listener, what it meant to truly be not hard rock but heavy metal. Listen to the opening riff to 22 Acacia Avenue and try to disagree.

The Number of the Beast has an excellent, excellent guitar tone. Certainly the best Maiden's ever had. Yet it's not quite as heavy as RTL IMO.

Idk, but I never really liked Maiden's rhythm tone. Never enough balls. Their lead tones are tasty, creamy goodness, though.

Ride The Lightning is an excellent answer to that question, my 3 rd best album ever and the guitar tone on it is mindblowing, really dark and rich at the same time, I love it ..

yep, that's the one, not only in terms of guitar tone but in every fucking departement that you can imagine, THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST is the fucking definition of what heavy metal is all about. So stop searching, it's right there in front of you THE FUCKING NUMBER OF THE BEAST, cannot be beaten in any way, shape or form.

Best metal guitar tone of all time. No question.

Cosmo Lee did a cool article about uncoventional guitar tones http://www.invisibleoranges.com/2010/08/top-10-unconventional-metal-guitar-tones/ and here are the overall best ones http://www.invisibleoranges.com/2010/07/top-10-metal-guitar-tones/

The fact that nobody has mentioned Tony Iommi yet is quite disturbing. He has always had the perfect heavy tone. He is also the loudest and heavist guitar you will ever hear live. TONY IOMMI >>>>>>>> everyone else.

As soon as I saw this thread, I thought Ride the Lightning. It's second to none, just a mean, tough as nails sound. However, I've got Into the Void going through my head right now and that is a pretty badass tone too.

Gary Holt's modern day tone slays all. Definitely my favorite rhythm tone ever.

Lead wise - probably Maiden.

His modern tones are beastly. "Follow the Tears" is one of the heaviest fucking things I've ever heard.

I also forgot to mention that the guitar tone on Megadeth's "Endgame" is absolutley amazing and easily the best sound Mustaine has ever gotten on record.

On the topic of Slayer, I think their guitars sound great on Christ Illusion. They sound like complete ass on WPB, but you can more than likely blame Greg Fidelman on that (he also managed to fuck up Metallica's guitar tone on DM).

meshuggah

I couldn't agree more, and this is why it turns my stomach when people say, "yeah, you gotta hear this band - they sound like Meshuggah!"

No they fucking don't. They may use polyrhythms and / or odd time signatures to some degree, and they may have a short, staccato playing style with a heavy palm-muting thing going on, but they do not have one of the sickest drummers on the planet (who, incidentally, I don't think is even from this planet :freak:), or some of the most talented guitar players ever playing in the band, and they most certainly do not have the same evil, disgustingly awesome guitar tone that makes Meshuggah unlike any other band out there. No they fucking don't. They DO NOT sound just like Meshuggah, you fucking dolt. Go listen to Gizmachi or Textures.

Aaahhhhh, glad I got that off my chest. :D

Oh, and regardless of whether or not you consider them metal, Kurt Ballou of Converge has the most consistently amazing guitar tone ever. He tweaks it ever so slightly from album to album, but it's always crushing.

Best metal guitar tone of all time. No question.Me four. You guys should check out Trap Them and Exhale. The latter is a Swedish grindcore band whose latest album is kickass (review here) (http://www.jukeboxmetal.com/2010/exhale-blind/).

Bingo. Petrucci's live sound regarding everything is just perfect.

My favorite guitar sound ever would probably be a toss up between a few things:
-Adrian Smith on Iron Maiden's "Somewhere In Time"
-John Sykes on Whitesnake's self-titled 1987 album
-Jorn Viggo Lofstad on just about everything he's recorded

makethemsuffer12
09-04-2010, 07:34 AM

But yeah, Petrucci's (and the band as a whole, really) sound absolutely blew my fucking mind at PNC in July.
