View Full Version : The Guide to Old School Death Metal

08-17-2010, 03:43 AM
Okay, I finally got around to finishing my list. This list is meant to be a guide to for newbies as well as those obsessed with the genre. There is one album per a band, that way the list isn't full of half a band's discography. The top 100 list will be first. Chances are, if you listen to a lot of death metal, you will know most of these bands, but you may find some hidden gems here. After the top 100 is a list of every other old school death metal album, EP, and demo I have on my computer. Of course I don't have everything (not even close), so if you have something that isn't on the list, please share it! I will add everyone's suggestions, assuming they are actually old school death metal. Keep in mind I will not be editing the top 100 list. It would be a pain in the ass to renumber everything, so if I happened to leave out an awesome album, sorry. Also, remember everybody's opinions are different. I tried to pick what I think is the best album by each band. If you don't like my choice, again, sorry. I added commentary to some of the albums, but I don't feel like typing a full review for each one. This smiley (:rocker:) indicates that I like the album a lot. And I know a lot of the images are poor quality. I took most of them off Metal Archives and resized them because I didn't want to have to use the new Google image search (which sucks). This took a long time to put together, so I hope you guys like it! :)

1. Abhorrence - Abhorrence (1990)

Abhorrence was one of Finland's early death metal bands. Despite the band only being active for a year, this EP became popular in the underground scene and likely had a great affect on future bands in the area.

2. Abramelin - Abramelin (1996)

3. Adramelech - Psychostasia (1996)

4. Apophis - Gateway To The Underworld (1993)

5. Arghoslent - Galloping Through the Battle Ruins (1998)

08-17-2010, 03:44 AM
6. Asphyx - The Rack (1991)

Asphyx is one of the early death metal bands from The Netherlands, along with Pestilence. Many consider this album legendary.

7. At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours (1992)

At the Gates was one of the earliest melodic death metal bands. Their first release is the most raw, showing the beginning of a new sub-genre. Personally, this is my favorite album of theirs.

8. Atheist - Piece of Time (1989) :rocker:

While Unquestionable Presence is by no doubt much more spectacular, Piece of Time is closer to the death metal sound. Atheist is one of the standout bands in the Florida death metal scene, often credited (along with others) for starting technical death metal.

9. Autopsy - Mental Funeral (1991)

On the opposite side of the country, Autopsy was putting out some incredible, raw death metal. Mental Funeral is my personal favorite, but it was a hard choice.

10. Banished - Deliver Me Unto Pain (1994)

08-17-2010, 03:46 AM
11. Baphomet - The Dead Shall Inherit (1992) :rocker:

Technically this is the same band as above before they had changed their name. I guess in a way I am breaking my own rule on including one album per a band. That being said, both albums are great, but I really love this one.

12. Belial - Wisdom of Darkness (1993)

13. Benediction - Transcend The Rubicon (1993)

14. Bolt Thrower - Realm Of Chaos (1989)

15. Brutality - Screams of Anguish (1993)

08-17-2010, 03:47 AM
16. Cancer - Death Shall Rise (1991)

17. Cannibal Corpse - Tomb Of The Mutilated (1992) :rocker:

Cannibal Corpse has always been hit or miss to me. Their early material was great, but as time went on I feel the more recent albums were just meh, with a few exceptions. Anyway, this album blew me away. Incredibly heavy, technical, brutal, etc. If you don't have it... well, I don't like you.

18. Carbonized - For the Security (1991)

This is one of the most interesting death metal albums I have heard. It combines typical old school death with grind and jazz influence. I definitely recommend this if you are looking for something out of the ordinary.

19. Carcass - Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious (1991) :rocker:

Ah, Carcass. This is one of my favorite death metal albums. The production is spot on, the lyrics are creative, and musicianship is great. Also, this is one of the few albums that the samples seem to add to the music, giving it an extra level or creepiness.

20. Cardiac Arrest - Morgue Mutilations (2006)

08-17-2010, 03:47 AM
21. Cemetery Urn - Urn of Blood (2007)

22. Centinex - Reborn Through Flames (1998)

23. The Chasm - Procession To The Infraworld (1999)

It seems like The Chasm just can't release a bad album. I would have to say this is my favorite. If you like a mix of death and doom, check them out.

24. Claws - Absorbed in the Nethervoid (2009)

Formed in 2008, this the first album by the one man band Claws. This album reminds me a lot of Incantation, so that automatically makes it awesome. :horns:

25. Crematory - Denial (2009)

This is a compilation album of the Swedish Crematory. It includes their EP as well as some demos.

08-17-2010, 03:48 AM
26. Crypt of Kerberos - World of Myths (1993)

27. Cryptopsy - None So Vile (1996) :rocker:

Many people consider this to be the best technical death metal album. I disagree with that, but it's definitely up there. The production is raw and the bass is audible (which I like). Lord Worm's vocals are completely undecipherable, but awesome at the same time. It's a shame the band went to shit.

28. Cynic - Focus (1993)

It's a stretch putting this album in here, but I knew someone would complain if it wasn't on the list. I've never been able to get into Cynic due to the overuse of the vocoder, but the music is spectacular. I prefer their demos, though, when there were only death growls.

29. Darkthrone - Soulside Journey (1991)

I enjoy all of the phases of Darkthrone, but I think this would have to be my favorite. Before changing styles, Darkthrone wrote some pretty awesome death metal. This is nothing like any of their other albums.

30. Death - Scream Bloody Gore (1987)

This is not my favorite Death album, but it is the one that started it all. While Death was not the first death metal band, they did a lot to popularize the genre, spurring a metal revolution in Florida.

08-17-2010, 03:49 AM
31. Deathevokation - The Chalice of Ages (2007)

32. Decapitated - Winds Of Creation (2000) :rocker::rocker:

Winds of Creation is Decapitated's strongest album. It is an endless riff fest that never feels dull. It's another one of my very favorites.

33. Deceased - Luck Of The Corpse (1991)

In the beginning, Deceased was a straight death metal band. Over the years their sound has evolved, incorporating elements of thrash, death, and heavy metal into their sound. Honestly, they've never put out a bad album.

34. Decrepit - Acrimonium (1997)

35. Decrepitaph - Beyond The Cursed Tombs (2010)

08-17-2010, 03:49 AM
36. Defleshed - Fast Forward (1999)

37. Deicide - Legion (1992)

Deicide is another one of those hit or miss bands for me. Their recent material is mostly boring, but their old stuff is great. Legion is another one of those legendary albums that you must listen to.

38. Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes (1992)

This is one of the most popular death metal albums to come out of Finland. The band was off to a great start with this album but did not put out another album until 2002, since they were broken up for a while in the 90s.

39. Demilich - Nespithe (1993) :rocker::rocker::rocker:

I've mentioned this album in a few other topics here, and with good reason. In my opinion this is one of the best technical death metal albums ever released. The vocals may take a bit of getting used to, but the musicianship in this band is incredible. I can honestly say I love every song on the album.

40. Demonical - Hellsworn (2009)

08-17-2010, 03:50 AM
41. Depravity - Silence of the Centuries (1993)

Depravity is yet another Finnish death metal act. They released two EPs and some demos before splitting in the mid 90s. This EP is very dark and heavy. Definitely worth listening to.

42. Deranged - Rated X (1995)

43. Derkéta - Goddess of Death (2003)

This is a compilation album for the Pennsy death/doom band Derkéta, consisting of their EP and two demos.

44. Deteriorot - In Ancient Beliefs (2001)

45. Disciples of Mockery - Prelude to Apocalypse (1999)

If you like Incantation, you will like this band. This album consists of three ex-Incantation members from the Onward to Golgotha era.

08-17-2010, 03:51 AM
46. Disincarnate - Dreams Of The Carrion Kind (1993) :rocker:

This is one of my favorite Florida death metal albums. James Murphy perfectly combines some heavy riffing with a bit of melody. Sadly, this is the only album released by Disincarnate.

47. Diskord - Doomscapes (2007)

As the album cover might suggest, this is some pretty abstract death metal. It has intense moments with some very interesting ones mixed in.

48. Dismember - Like an Ever Flowing Stream (1991) :rocker:

This was the beginning of Swedish legends Dismember. This seems to be the most popular release by them, and in my opinion it is another must have.

49. Dominus Xul - The Primigeni Xul (I Condemned my Enemies) (1998)

50. Edge of Sanity - Nothing But Death Remains (1991)

08-17-2010, 03:51 AM
51. Entombed - Left Hand Path (1990) :rocker:

This is probably the best Swedish death metal album released. You really can't go wrong with this one.

52. Execration - Syndicate Of Lethargy (2008)

53. Exhumed - Slaughtercult (2000)

Exhumed play a style of death metal similar to Carcass, but more intense. If you want some grinding death metal, this will satisfy you.

54. Fleshcrawl - Descend Into The Absurd (1992)

55. Funebrarum - The Sleep Of Morbid Dreams (2009)

08-17-2010, 03:52 AM
56. God Dethroned - Bloody Blasphemy (1999)

57. God Macabre - The Winterlong (1993)

58. Golem - Eternity: The Weeping Horizons (1996)

59. Gorguts - Considered Dead (1991) :rocker:

Although Obscura seems to be considered their best album, I really love the simplicity of Considered Dead. Plus, it fits better with the rest of the list. There are hints of technicality here and there, a sign of what Gorguts would become in the future.

60. Grave - Into The Grave (1991)

I feel a lot of Grave's albums are mediocre, but their first release is among their strongest. This is some great Swedish death metal.

08-17-2010, 03:52 AM
61. Hibernus Mortis - The Existing Realm Of Perpetual Sorrow (2002) :rocker:

This is a band I don't think many people have heard of. They're raw and incredibly heavy sounding. This is a great addition to any death metal fan's collection.

62. Hypocrisy - Osculum Obscenum (1993)

63. Immolation - Dawn Of Possession (1991) :rocker:

64. Impaled - The Dead Shall Dead Remain (2000)

65. Incantation - Onward to Golgotha (1992) :rocker:

This is among the most evil sounding death metal albums. Onward to Golgotha has the perfect atmosphere for a death metal album.

08-17-2010, 03:53 AM
66. Incrust - Baptized In Unholy Gore (2004)

67. Interment - Into The Crypts Of Blasphemy (2010)

Interment is a Swedish death metal band that has been around since '88, yet this is their first full length album. Needless to say, this is great classic Swede death. So, better late than never, right?

68. Intestine Baalism - Ultimate Instinct (2008)

The Japanese can make good death metal too! Intestine Baalism mixes classic death metal with some melody, and does it very well. I highly recommend checking out these guys.

69. Kataklysm - Sorcery (1995)

I'm sure most of the members here are familiar with Kataklysm's recent material, but they might not know what they used to sound like. Before changing to a more mainstream sound, Kataklysm wrote some pretty intense death metal.

70. Loudblast - Sublime Dementia (1993)

08-17-2010, 03:54 AM
71. Malevolent Creation - The Ten Commandments (1991)

72. Massacre - From Beyond (1991)

73. Monstrosity - Imperial Doom (1992)

As many of you may know, before Corpsegrinder joined Cannibal Corpse, he was the vocalist for Monstrosity. He is featured on this awesome album.

74. Morbid Angel - Altars Of Madness (1989) :rocker::rocker:

This is another for the must have list. Morbid Angel is another one of the death metal legends that you really need to hear. There's not much else I need to say about this album.

75. Morbius - Alienchrist (1995)

08-17-2010, 03:54 AM
76. Morgue - Eroded Thoughts (1993)

77. Morpheus Descends - Ritual of Infinity (1992)

78. Morta Skuld - Dying Remains (1993)

79. Nerlich - Defabricated Process (2007)

80. Nocturnus - The Key (1990)

Spacey, sci-fi death metal from Florida.

08-17-2010, 03:55 AM
81. Nominon - Diabolical Bloodshed (1999)

Here is some more great Swedish death metal for you. Diabolical Bloodshed was the band's first full length. They released a new album this year and did a few small US tour in support of it.

82. Obituary - Slowly We Rot (1989)

After the first few albums, Obituary began to lose their step. Their earliest album is by far my favorite by them. They were another key band in the developing Florida death metal scene.

83. Obliteration - Nekropsalms (2009) :rocker:

Obliteration is a newer death metal band from Norway. This is their second album, which includes quite a few longer songs. The longer songs do not feel boring, though. This a very strong death metal album.

84. Old Funeral - The Older Ones (1999)

Before the birth of Immortal, three of the members were together in this death metal band. The Older Ones is a compilation of their EP and two demos.

85. Pestilence - Consuming Impulse (1989)

There is no doubt this was highly influential to many bands throughout Europe at the time. This another to add to your must have list.

08-17-2010, 03:56 AM
86. Possessed - Seven Churches (1985)

Possessed are the true fathers of death metal. Seven Churches was the first death metal album to be released. Although this is a very primitive form of the genre, it is a great record and something everybody needs to at least give a listen.

87. Putrevore - Morphed From Deathbreath (2008)

88. Revenant - Prophecies of a Dying World (1991) :rocker:

Awesome death/thrash. This was the only album Revenant released but it's nothing short of spectacular. It consists of longer songs, averaging around six minutes.

89. Ripping Corpse - Dreaming with the Dead (1991) :rocker::rocker:

I would have to say this is the ultimate death/thrash album. Unfortunately the band split up before releasing a second album.

90. Rottrevore - Iniquitous (1993)

08-17-2010, 03:56 AM
91. Runemagick - The Supreme Force Of Eternity (1998)

92. Suffocation - Effigy Of The Forgotten (1991) :rocker:

As most of you already know, this is an absolutely crushing album. If you don't know, go listen to it.

93. Terrorizer - World Downfall (1989)

Terrorizer combines death metal and grindcore into this simplistic, yet driving album. The songs are all short, but feel perfect.

94. Uncanny - Splenium For Nyktophobia (1994)

95. Unleashed - Where No Life Dwells (1991)

08-17-2010, 03:57 AM
96. Vader - De Profundis (1995)

There's no doubt that Vader is the band that put Poland on the death metal map. I believe their second album is stronger than the first.

97. Vermin - Plunge Into Oblivion (1994)

98. Viogression - Expound and Exhort (1991)

99. Vital Remains - Let Us Pray (1992) :rocker:

This is another one of the strongest death metal releases. Incredibly heavy with long winding songs.

100. Vomitory - Raped In Their Own Blood (1996)

And what better way to finish off the list with some more awesome Swedish death metal?

08-17-2010, 03:58 AM

My only complaint would be the amount of modern death metal, but otherwise 100% awesome list.
Nice job! :light:

08-17-2010, 05:27 PM
Holy shit

What an absolute behemoth of a list man, many props. I'm sure I can find some great stuff from this :rocker:

08-17-2010, 05:30 PM
wow, I've heard of about 10% of these bands here

Thanks for this list man, this should be very helpful to me :allan: Old school DM is the only form of death metal I can even tolerate, so I'm in luck here

08-17-2010, 05:32 PM
I wonder how long this will go before you get shit for Arghoslent.
I've heard about 80% of the main list and less than half of the second, the first one I definitely need to finish off, but I recognize a lot of the names in the second and am 'eh' about them.

Also- I had forgotten how awesome that Rottevore album is. Insane!
And the one glaring omission I see is Impetigo's Horror of the Zombies, which I feel is one of the greatest death metal albums of all time.

And I am thrilled that you threw in Mental Funeral over Severed, high five!

08-17-2010, 05:49 PM

...Why? Am I missing something here :eyes:

The part where they are Hammerskins, openly support/sing about hating black people, Jews etc, are pro slavery/holocaust and all that maybe?
People on here flip out over Anal Cunt, which is all for humor's sake, so I'm just making a guess :)

Oh...I didn't really know about that to be honest :hecho:

I'll just pretend like I don't know when I listen to them...

Oh...I didn't really know about that to be honest :hecho:

I'll just pretend like I don't know when I listen to them...

You weren't tipped off by song titles like Flogging the Cargo, Rape of a Slave, Hornet of the Pogrom, The Negress or Tar Skinned Pygmoids of the Deep Bush haha?
They aren't like 'stupid' skinheads (with the exception of their use of words like nigger,) in interviews they come off as extremely intelligent, certainly more sophisticated than most death metal bands.
It's very iffy for me, on the one hand I have a hard time support people this openly bigoted, but on the other they make such amazing death metal...so music trumps political ideology.
It is kind of sad though, they were going to be one of the opening bands after Kerasphorus broke up on the Proclamation tour, which puts into question the ideology's of a lot of amazing bands on there for me, but oh well, I'll just hope they don't agree.

And the one glaring omission I see is Impetigo's Horror of the Zombies, which I feel is one of the greatest death metal albums of all time.

I don't know how I forgot that. I'll add it to the second part.

Anyway, I'm glad you liked it. :D

Cool list. I really respect the inclusion of Cancer. When that cd 1st came out I couldn't get enough of it. I guess Bathory is considered Black Metal but no list like this can be complete without them to me. Without Bathory I probably wouldn't have gotten into Deicide, Death, Athiest and others.

This must've taken quite a while man, good job!

I was curious to see if you would pick Clandestine, Deicide, Retribution, Testimony of the Ancients, etc. or their counterparts (which you did). It was also good to see stuff on there I love that never gets mentioned in this forum.

A lot of modern metal, true, but in the vein of Old School.

You should post links to recommended songs from each album here :D

Yes. I could do it, but I don't necessarily want to.

I know you have Master on there, but Abomination is also a kick ass band that should have been mentioned.

Jesus Christ, I had no idea how hardcore you are...

I need to check some of these out! Thanks for the list.

I'm glad people are still getting some use out of this. Looking back at it though, there are some things I would change.

I just downloaded quite a few albums off this list and I'm going to listen to them throughout the week. I also finally listened to Left Hand Path (I know, shame on me) and it is an awesome record.

General Surgery - Necrology is a great fucking EP.

Probably should have included them as well, seeing as Terrorizer is on there.

I thought the same thing. Out of the 300+ albums listed, I've probably heard of 50 of the bands. Not a good %. Seems like the thing to do my next night off is grab a 12er and check some these obscure titles out.

Oh, and JD, you can thank him for enlightening us on Benighted. He was the one who first told me about them. Thanks again treghet!

Just saw this list now. Good job in taking time out to make this list man! I'll be sure to check out the albums I haven't listened to from this list.

Thanks. I really just want to redo it now though. I should have focused solely on older bands and there are a lot of albums that should be in there, but I hadn't really got into at the time I made this.
