Okay so after successfully stirring the pot with the False Metal thread, I figured I'd be nice and post some essential death metal albums. Most of these will be Death Metal, some Thrash, and crossover stuff (blackened death, etc.) I will not be posting many Black Metal albums in this thread, that will be seperate because I have a feeling most people will be like "fuck this lo-fi bullshit it sounds like ass" and I completely understand that. Well, I'm fucking tired of this. I'm actually leaving a lot of stuff out. Between 88-98 alone I could double this list. It's a little too old school right now because I kind of started old and worked my way up. Anyway this is a start, I'll edit this as I go and I'm open to suggestions. Doom, BM, and Grind will eventually get their own "Essential" thread. I purposely left out anything huge (Big 4, etc) that may be considered a given by many people. Lotta work to be done, but all of these albums are great alternatives to...um...shit that sucks

So aparently you didn't read the OP. Specifically the part about omitting obvious choices, big four, etc. This is primarily a DM list.

Your list needs Heartwork and Formulas Fatal To The Flesh

ravenheart

Not nearly enough Opeth and Obituary and too much of nearly everything else, except Cynic, Nile, Carcass, Death and Atheist. The title really shouldn't be "essential metal albums" either. The list is far to specific for such a general title. This is, as you rightly pointed out, an Essential Death Metal Albums" list.

I think a thrash list along these lines would be quite interesting.

I don't consider those albums essential in the realm of the bands other work, or the realm of DM. I like them, but not essential.

I'll throw some Obituary in there but Opeth, while I enjoy them thoroughly, is not DM.

So what album goes in exchange for which Obituary album?

ravenheart
08-03-2010, 07:28 AM
I think the members of Opeth might contest that point.

The last two Obituary albums have been excellent.

I'd drop Kreator. Not because they're not awesome (clearly they are), but they're totally out of place on this list.

There should be a corresponding thrash list, and they should be on that.

Heartwork is not essential Death Metal. Especially when it's not even close to the best Carcass album. Please quote where I said it didn't influence any bands.

Pretty good list I would add:

Possessed - Seven Churches
Extol - Undeceived
Gojira - From Mars To Sirius
Dying Fetus - Destroy the Opposition
Benediction - Transcend the Rubicon
Deeds of Flesh - Mark of the Legion
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes
God Dethroned - Bloody Blasphemy

Augury - Concealed
Baphomet - The Dead Shall Inherit
Cadaver - ...in Pains

I don't know if you've heard it or not, but you might be able to enjoy Carcass's last album, Swansong. Compared to the other Carcass albums, I like it the least, for err, obvious reasons, I guess? But it's still a fun album, and it's kickass when ya listen to it.

i've listened to Swansong a few times. it's good, but deeefinitely not as great as Heartwork, which in my opinion is a melodeath masterpiece. i couldn't get into the first 2 Carcass albums at all, but i somewhat liked Necroticism, but it's just not really my thing. i listen to Heartwork a lot though.

I didn't really read most of the comments because they're gayer than 10 adam lamberts but I'll leave you with this:

This is a list of albums that I typed up. I could probably list 200 more if I wanted to. Before you post shit like "how is this not on here" or "why..." or "what..." consider this:

1. It's my list and I can do whatever the fuck I want which means if it says in the description "no melodeath will be on here" you would have to be a complete moron to expect melodeath to be on there. Even ATG. Am I saying ATG sucks? No. I just said I wasn't listing MD. No need to get your tampon twisted.
3. It's not a list of be-all-end-all metal. My intention is to put out there some old-school DM that I think people would like with the hopes of people discovering some stuff they weren't into before. Again, allow me to reiterate that I'm not listing the only good metal albums, it was just a stream of consciousness post. So chill out you fucking marys.

So, if you want to point to an album and argue (with somebody else of course, I'm not into that) that it sucks. Go ahead. But saying gay shit like "how is this not on there" is pretty fucking stupid. It would be like me asking you why you have such a small dick: it was just born that way ;)

You are probably the only person to throw Mortuary Drape on a list on here, so that makes this better than 99% of the rest. There's a lot of obscure stuff I'd put in but as a whole it really hits all the bases.

Also- Heartwork isn't close to being the best Carcass album. It's an awesome album, but the second to least good (Swansong being the obvious holder of that title.)
And Opeth is not death metal, they are just bad metal.
